how does perry own so much of journey without working? sorry i don't know much about this.did he enter some kind of agreement with them where he takes a percentage even if he is not with the band? i bet if he did this something tells me it would've occured in the raised on radio era of the band.

maybe something to the affect of.....'i'm only going to record again if i get a bigger piece of the pie or a certain percentage for life' kind of deal.kind of like what axl rose did to guns n roses before they were due to go on a tour. he held the band hostage to his demands.the members needed the revenue so they caved in and signed over the rights to rose.i think this happen in '89 or '90 right before use your illusions.i'm wondering did perry do something similar?

Every time they perform a song he wrote or helped write, he gets a royalty.

Isn't it true though that all musicains that write songs, and have their songs played on the radio or other media get royalty checks for it.

He gets a cut, as a band member, from every show they play. He doesn't even have to show up.

Mechanical royalties are totally separate from that. He's doing well.

first, he gets royalties from all recorded music...and since he wrote/co-wrote most of the songs played on radio or sold in stores...it amounts to big bucks each year

second, from what i remember...he negotiated a partnership with the present journey getting a percentage of the gross or net dollars from their performances...it has nothing to do with what songs they play live. any band can play a cover song live without having to pay the original artist. it's just that in this case, perry negotiated a piece of journey up fron when he left

Believe it or not, they've been trying to change this. Seems like it would be hard if not impossible to control or enforce.

Yes, a lot of it boils down to royalties more than 'owning', if you will.
DDY 'formerly of Styx'.. , makes so much more damn money off of royalties than any other member of Styx because soooooo many of HIS songs are/were huge hits. That's why the others have to still tour and Dennis can do whatever he wants.
Dennis and I once had a talk about Steve Perry and he said that respected how Steve was living his life right now. Dennis performs still because he enjoys it, he sure as hell does not need the money. Steve doesn't either, but he obviously has chosen to stay recluse.
Going off a bit here, but he also said it was interesting how on BTM they could edit things just enough to not change what was said, but make it sound different. He made this comment because he saw this as he watched Styx', and only knowing some here and there about Journey ahead of time, he wondered how much was the same for theirs.
Some bands today are setting it up to where everyone in the band gets an equeal share.

It's like a boxer who's a mandatory challenger getting "step aside" money to let the champ fight someone else. Lennox Lewis did it a bunch of times.
he's gotta be compensated for his willingness to step aside and let the show go on. Same here.

Steve said in his last Q & A that he no longer has ANY ties to the band as it exists today. Of course he still gets royalties from the catalog.

Just because he didn't attend a well known college doesn't mean the guy isn't business smart.

He made smarter decisions, and don't have wives and kids scattered all over the country. Good advisors were chosen by him, wouldn't you agree? Or did he just pick someone from the crowd to handle HIS money for him.

Yeah, like some NFL rookies go crazy and spend all their money on houses and cars, and father several kids with several women. Then you see the occasional player who still drives a 1995 Ford pickup, the same one he bought the year he was drafted. That's Perry.
