I'd heard Augeri sounded really bad on this but it was better than I expected.
It seems the band is playing it a little slower than normal, they just don't sound tight.
Too early in the morning for them I guess.

Further putting the lie to the oft-bandied myth that post-Perry Journey recieved no publicity.
Equalitive to the type of hysteria the band was used to in its heyday?
No, not even close.
Then again, why should it be?
It was a new band and for being that, they were treated to a Direct TV broadcast, a state-wide radio simulcast of sorts, VH1's Behind the Music, appearances on Blind Date and the CBS Morning Show.
The fact that less and less publicity appearances ensued was probably for the best, as Augeri was not performing at his optimum peak either here or on Blind Date.
Little piece of trivia: the CBS Morning Show Weatherman, Mark McEwen, who introduced Journey on this clip is a HUGE, longtime Neal Schon fan.

If you're making your grand re-introduction to the national public, you better aspire to be just as good, if not better, than you were before. Especially when you're missing your most recognizable asset.
This performance does not live up to Journey's previous high standards.
In fact, I think it's an absolute disaster.
It doesn't win over any new fans and it certainly did nothing to convert old ones.

Y'know, with all the bewailing over Deano and the many appeals for his return, you would think everyone could at least try to honor him in spirit.
And by that I mean, well, for starters, stop being "ok" with an inferior product just because it happens to be sanctioned with the official Journey imprimatur.
It was Deano's categorical unwillingness to accept mediocrity that got the ball rolling in the first place.
If a flaming turd rolls off the assembly line, lodge it straight at the head of the CEO.
That's the Deano way.
It is in this same torch-bearing, unbowed spirit that I affirm this performance to be utter shit.
I hope other self-respecting Journey fans will join me.

And his brother, Kirk, is a morning DJ in Baltimore. Worked for 98 Rock for many years until recently when he switched to another station.

Hindsight being what is is... I can see why now, Journey was not included on Live By Request...

This is the first time I have seen it -- it was better than I expected, after hearing a lot of bitching about it for years.

Yeah, the CBS early morning show, while lesser bands were booked on NBC's Today.

Great find! Thanx.
Neal should definitely keep that look. He doesn't look like a midget.
Wasn't he endorsing PRS at the time? He's playing a Les Paul.

Oh my god! This is the first time I saw this...
If Perry was watching this when it originally aired, he must have been LAUGHING HIS ASS OFF!!
If you pay attention, at the top of the song, it's obvious they used pre-recorded instrumentals here. Neal is strumming the low register rhythm part while a high pitched solo riff mysteriously plays across the background.
The kicker is just HOW BAD AUGERI WAS SINGING!! Could he have been any more off pitch!? Sorry guys, but there's no excuse for this. Plenty of other bands perform on morning shows at these same hours and they don't have these problems.
Bottom line is he just doesn't have the pipes for Journey. You know who does? Dean. They should boot him out from behind the drums and make him take the front man position. He's too insecure to do it, but he sure has the chops for it.

The music behind him sounds like utter shit. Sounds as if Augeri is singing a tone down to fit the music behind him. It's not that bad.

after doing a show the night before, hopping on a bus from Ohio (I think), no warm-up probably, braving windy, 60 degree weather. Cut the guy some slack already.
Perry never would have agreed to it.....but he had that power.

That performance made me not want to be a Journey fan anymore. The standards they set as a band were officially GONE, after that morning. It was horrible. Maybe not horrible if you are REO or some other band that isnt known for near perfect LIVE performances. If you listened to Journey with a musical ear and not just for their hair or leather pants, you'd know they sucked that morning.
It might be true that Perry had the power to say no, if he wasn't up to it, but at least he had the sense to control things in order to maintain high standards. There isn't anybody doing that in Journey anymore.

I've seen him better but I don't think Augeri was THAT bad on this TV clip...
Higher Place seems like a difficult vocal to pull off, too.
I HATE that song live and it's a top 5 tune in the Augeri era.

I'm guessing this was originally a VHS recording which may explain why the sound is muddled.
If Augeri came off a show the night before, I have to give him props for being there at all.
Regardless of the opposing views, I'm glad I got to see a few shows before it all crumbled down.
