didn't notice a date on that interview. When was that one? The interviewer was throwing him fucking softball questions.

They should've asked him:

"Doesn't it bother you that half your interviewers can't seem to get your name correctly?"

note to interviewer, Scot, do your homework... not knowing that Journey was on tour for 5 years... is pretty lame... after the first question I could not go on with it...

Probably end of 2006. The interview didn't start off too well. "When are you going on tour?" "We've been on tour for 5 years!"

I thought the Perry responses were the most interesting.

2 things I want to highlight:

"What’s the biggest regret of your musical career?
NS: For one, right off the top of my head, when Steve Perry decided he didn’t want to go on with our Raised on Radio tour so we ended up taking a year or two, then three and four, then five and six, seven and eight and nine and 10. So, there were 10 years that went by and had I known it was going to be that long before he wanted to do anything, I would have moved on at that point with the band."

This clearly illustrates the Journey side of things in the aborting of the ROR tour, something which some loons try to say did not happen, that he GAVE them a concrete answer that he was quitting Journey at that time. Obviously that's not how Neal real the message, and ...

"TW: How are your relations with Steve these days?
NS: Well, I know he collects a check at the end of our tour – he must be happy"

the above one needs no more elaboration.

TW: What’s the biggest regret of your musical career?
NS: For one, right off the top of my head, when Steve Perry decided he didn’t want to go on with our Raised on Radio tour in 1983. He said, “I’m just burnt. We need to take a rest. I’d like to take a year or two off,” so we ended up taking a year or two, then three and four, then five and six, seven and eight and nine and 10. So, there were 10 years that went by and had I known it was going to be that long before he wanted to do anything, I would have moved on at that point with the band.

That mistake killed any chance of the band ever having hit records again.

There's only one reason why bands like Bon Jovi and Aerosmith are still commercially successful today: They stayed in the public eye.

Nice interview. The birds were singing, the skies were blue...

Was going to comment on this one as well.

"NS: Well, I know he collects a check at the end of our tour – he must be happy"

Not sure is he was being sarcastic, but if he was,I have to laugh.Of course SP gets a check,he co-wrote the concert set-list.
Neal and Jon would have gotten the same check if Journey would've toured without them but with their songs in the set.

Oh well.

So Perry had to pay them when he played songs on the FTLOSM tour? Hope they didn't spend it all in one place.

Yea, that vaunted, brilliant perry business accumen. Used it on his bandmates, sheer and utter class through and through.

"I have NO intention of touring anytime other than my own good time, but I also don't want YOU guys to tour without me unless I am paid to do so. You KNOW I could tie everything up in years of litigation by claiming I did want to tour and you didn't want to a wait a reasonable time for me to get ready to do so. So rather than bog down in that expensive, painstaking, time consuming undertaking, you'll just as soon tour and make the checks out to me on a regular basis."

Er, yea.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?! I've never heard ANYWHERE that any Journey band member asked for or got a single cent from the FTLOSM tour.

It's called creator revenues, royalties.Every songwriter gets them everytime his creation is played in public, whether the creator participates or not.
What you said is fiction.

I don't know if my fabricated perry quote IS "fiction" per se. True I made the verbiage up, but reading between the lines of what is ACTUALITY, the guy demanded and got hush money. And when are you in a position to demand that? when you threaten to tie their ongoing careers up in a few few years of lawsuits. Knowing that all they wanted to do was move on without you, they'll take a deep a deep breath, look the other way, and put pen to paper just to make the divorce final.

Again Where were Schon/Cain/Valory/Rolie/(Dunbar?)'s creative royalties from his FTLOSM undertaking?

Roylaties don't come into play just for singing the songs live. RELEASING them yes (2001 dvd. I agree. Perry cowrote or the case of LTS wrote a lot of those songs, he's entitle to collect).

What this agreement was all about, p getting paid for every show was p making it hard on them, pure and simple by hanging some kind of threat of litigation over their heads. Why the hell ELSE would they opt to pay him as though he was there? Fucking KINDNESS???????

Red13JoePa wrote:Roylaties don't come into play just for singing the songs live.

Sorry, but the law is clear on this.Royalty payment is calculated for each licensed song used in the tour set lists.
All the writers/co-writers of the songs & lyrics get paid whenever the piece of work is played.

For example,I wrote the lyrics to some songs of a rock band.I get a check everytime they tour and play those songs.
If this is working in a little country like Romania,so does in the big US.

I'm sure there's enough info about royalties online, give it a try.

Btw,No ONE will ever know what went on between Perry/Schon/Cain regarding thier agreements (financial or otherwise).
I was referring to this "check" thing from a legal point of view.

I don't think that is accurate. I think any band can cover any song they want, but they cannot record anything.

Either way, in Perry's case, he gets paid every time they go on tour as if here were there with them according to HH.

Laura is right, BUT it just doesn't happen. Azoff and company, as much as they'd LIKE to, simply can't scour the country making sure every cover band is licensed and paying the proper fees. Jeremey would be the man to answer this. Yo, where you at, J?

If it is a simple matter of following the already established, enforced, accepted and followed royalty payment practice for perry to collect checks (which some have reported are equal to Schon/Cain) for tours, then why is it an issue that comes up periodically and generally surprises people who don't know about it?
Why would Neal speak of it as though it is extraordinary? Why would Herbie Herbert speak of the arrangement in incredulity? Why do loons praise perry's shrewdness and poke fun at Neal's stupidity for allowing himself to be backed into such a situation?

Does DeYoung reap the exact same benefits from Styx? DLR from Van halen? Lou Gramm and Foreigner? On and on.
Does Jeremey and Frontiers have to pay Schon/Cain/Perry's publishing companies for every show?

What about all tribute/cover bands?

There is something more.

Because he co wrote most of the songs they perform.
Not just in Perry's case but in the case of any band member who has a writing credit whether they are performing live or not. If he withdrew his permission to perform songs he part created, where would they be? They'd have hardly any songs TO perform live.
So - rather than not perform them at all, they pay the co-creator a cut.[In Perry's case it's maybe a bigger cut than is usual.]
Thats how it works.

In the UK - [I am in a covers band] the venues we play have to have an entertainment licence. The licence costs thousands of pounds each year. A cut from that goes to the PRS [Performing Rights Society] and they ensure the composers of the songs we cover get their royalties. The PRS check up on us every so often to obtain a list of songs we perform.

The composers always get their money. And quite right, too. Sounds to me like Perry went a step further, and maybe Neal resents being suckered into a deal he might now regret.
Sounds to me like Perry is very smart indeed.

I think the 3 Journey songwriters are either members of ASCAP or BMI.Not sure which and it isn't even important - both these organisations are following the same rules.

Maybe this'll help.

I don't get that. You'd never hear live music at bars if that were the case.

I think it CAN happen if a composer of the song says, "Hey I want to be paid for you guys singing those songs or else I will say I was wrongfully terminated from the band and sue." In which case Neal, who was THAT close to being able to continue Journey right away but without Perry, allowed himself to be bent over a barrel in his zeal to carry on. Sure, there's bitterness over there. Sure now he probably says to himself every time tens of thousands go out of his account after a tour, "damn I wish I'd called his bluff, gone to court and subpeanoed those fucking medical records. It would've set us back a good while but the damn thing would;ve suit would've been tossed out and perry would be writing ME checks for court costs and my legal fees."

Composers must have to give permission for their stuff to be used - otherwise why didn't the makers of The Soprano's just go ahead and use DSB?
Wasnt there a big thing about SP wanting to check the song's integrity wasnt going to be compromised etc etc etc - before he allowed them to use it?

So he must have had some legal loophole or SOMETHING put on songs he's connected with??

And my guess is that neal doesn't resent SP getting his cut per se, but he's pissed that he has to go out and perform for his money while SP sits in his mansion, twiddling his toes in the sand and gets paid for doing bugger all these last ten years.
