I agree Mon. I know that the shit hit the fan over the whole "Tapegate", and some of it he deserved. Overall, I'm glad we had him for a few years, as he added a lot to the band and enabled the band to continue. Just a shame he lost his voice! Oh well.

Good clips in this thread. Proof that SA didn't always sound all that bad. I especially enjoyed the clip of GCHI.

Super rendition of a great Journey song.

Augeri obviously still had a lot of his Tall Stories look working back then, too.

Hair poofy and stage getup kind of elfin but boy could he belt. 8)

Are you guys kidding me? Augeri is so off-key I couldn't make it through the entire clip. It's horrendous! And don't give me the "poor sound quality" excuse. Augeri is not a live singer. He sounds fine in a studio setting when he can do retake after retake.

Actually have to agree with Niggy, that wasn't bad at all. Granted, he doesn't have the vocal power of Perry or JSS, but he did a pretty good job on that. Would sure love to have heard JSS on that one, he was great on the ROR stuff.

"So off-key?" Wow. This performance is incredible and shows that SA was once a great singer. You do realize that even people like Steve Perry have sang slightly flat in a live setting before? God forbid.

Everyone has off days, and singers are most prone to it due to the wide variety of health issues that can effect your voice. I'm sure if Youtube had been around for the last 35 some years, there'd be plenty of clips available where bands don't even sound like a cohesive unit because they're too blasted, high, or just plain out having an off day. I love when people post a Youtube clip of a bad performance as evidence that a band or performer is awful based on an off night. The advent of Youtube and easier bootlegging methods makes this kind of judgment a dime a dozen nowadays. BTW, I'm not trying to say that Augeri's voice wasn't shot last year or whatever else, but gimme a break... he and Deen sound incredible on this.

Yup. Perfect example of how you have to prove yourself here to be taken seriously. Single digit posters with far out opinions are written off as trolls pretty quickly.

He sounds pretty damn good. Love the clip of IBAWY - very well done.

I've seen Perry (Frontiers) and SA ('03) with Journey. I never had the pleasure to see Jeff w/ Journey, although I did catch a Malmsteen show w/ JSS...

...with that said, if I had to make a choice, I prefer Augeri. Not that he's the "best singer", I just like his tone and stage style and I like his take on the classics.

Don't get me wrong. Yes, Perry is God. Yes, JSS was doing a great job from what I heard on clips and should never have been fired. I was looking forward to the new Journey CD.

 I have been sitting on the sidelines reading post about my once favorite band. I never really felt compelled to respond to anything because most of it isn't worth it; however, when it comes to Steve Augeri I can't resist. I applaud you for seeing the talent that this man has/had. He gave Journey what it and its fans needed, something to believe in. When all this crap came rolling down last year there were too many people that forgot what life Steve brought back to this group and to all of us who grew up with this band. I have had the pleasure of meeting Steve multiple times (even have had him introduce me to others as his friend) and I can honestly say he is one hell of a guy!! So for you all to say that you enjoyed the clip and enjoyed listening to Steve when he was fronting this group, hats off to you! It sure beats the other shit that is posted on this forum.

Dude,

I was at that show as well in Louisville. Augeri was a bit uncomfortable but kicked ass during that show. He was great that day.

Very interesting. He really mixed it up & made the song his own there. Why did he later on start doing it exactly like the Perry recording? I actually liked the way he did this way better than anything I heard from 2001 onwards. It was not anything like the Perry-impersonation he tried after that. Makes me wonder if that was ever his decision or something the other 2 idiots forced on him.

He's not off-key there. He just changes the way he sings the notes (something Perry was a master of live & why he always sounded so fantastic). That would have done Augeri some justice over the years & maybe preserved his voice.

Sadly I can hear a very slight strain at the high notes even at that point tho. Hearing some of his TS stuff & the direction they were going in w/demos when they quit & now hearing this, I just wish he'd been allowed to put more of "him" into his Journey-time. Instead of doing the dirty dozen as close as possible to the GH album nite after nite after nite.

Damn Friga & Fro really are idiots.

I know what you mean about him moving toward trying to sing the songs more like Perry later, and he was probably doing what he was told. I had never really noticed it before, but someone pointed it out to me at work one day when we were watching the Vegas DVD. Neal is so envious that he's not the front man that it kills him. I'm sure if it didn't sound like he had a load hung in his throat every time he sang, he would try to front Journey or another band. Both Neal and Jon suck just bad enough vocally to keep that from happening. I think Castronovo could though. Ross.... Maybe ZZ Top. lol
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

This was (Vacation's Over) the last tour they played GCHI with Augeri on a regular basis, wasn't it? I think they played I'll Be Alright regularly enough, but no GCHI...

BTW, along with this is one of perry doing it solo on the FTLOSM tour. Not as good as the live one from the ROR tour on the GH DVD but decent. Some note changes that he attempt to divert with some of the FTLOSM era note beachballing gymnastics...but not a bad vocal at all.

Perry was a master at that all thru his career. If u listen to some of the Journey boots even from as early as 79, there are times when if u have a very good ear, u can tell he wasn't having a perfect nite. Sometimes he's just a little more nasally as if he has a cold. Instead of letting it show, he brilliantly disguised it by changing the way he took notes. That made it sound absolutely brilliant. Most performers that I've known are not able to do that on the fly the way Perry did. He knew his voice extremely well. He also obviously knew that touring the way they did he could not do the vocal gymnastics EVERY nite so on some nites it was better to mix it up a bit. That's one of the big reasons I admire him so much actually.

You know, I LOVE Augeri. I really do. I think he's a great singer. BUT he DID have pitch problems live. I'm not sure why the band didn't get him some electronic pitch help (and no I'm not talking about tapes but just sound reinforcement). Many singers use pitch correction live. You'd never see Perry doing it because that boy has amazing pitch sensibilities. But Augeri AND JSS could've used them in a lot of live stuff I heard. I've always heard Cain used it, even Herbie referenced "Singing with a computer". It's possible that Augeri had his voice too loud in his in-ears. That can really F with your pitch if you can't hear your reference instrument. He did have SOME pitch problems live, but it wasn't always.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
