Arts: Why Live Earth was a dead loss
Debate is raging on internet message boards over whether Madonna's "rocking" Live Earth performance owed more to technical wizadry than musical talent.

Madonna at Live Earth: It was rocking, but was it real?
Millions of people around the world saw the American singer, not known for her strumming skills, wrap a guitar strap around her neck and play along to her hit Ray of Light on Saturday night.

The packed Wembley Stadium crowd loved the unexpected flourish, but cynics have suggested that Madonna may not have actually been playing the instrument.

The Queen of Pop has, apparently, been taking lessons, but gossips have questioned whether she is yet sufficiently proficient to perform live.

"Was that real?", asked Spotnick on the music website Neworderonline.com

It has also been claimed that the length of Madonna's fingernails would make it impossible to play the guitar properly, although a close inspection of photographs from the show reveal she had them closely clipped for the occasion.

Other music fans have suggested that the slightly amateurish sound was proof enough that it was a genuine live show.

Junglejungle wrote on the Yahoo message board: "She did a few mistakes also.. her timing was out... perhaps she should stick to singing."

Others were more impressed. "I've never seen Madonna play an electric guitar before - she thinks she's Jimi Hendrix - you have to see the feedback trick she did at the end of the first song," said DudeAsInCool on the BeatKing music website.

Kurtlives on the GuitarZone message board said: "The playing wasn't tough but the fact she played surprised and impressed me. Like most pop singers of today dont write or even play any instruments on their tunes."

Never heard of that one before!! Thought it was funny..

I still like those 80s hits of hers.

Cherish, La Isla Bonita, Who's That Girl?, Live To Tell, Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Like A Prayer, Express Yourself....

not a fan of Borderline, Lucky Star or Crazy For You though.

Proud veteran of the Blonde Ambition tour, too.

Don't fucking ask.

She had to be playing except that thing at the end. The other guitarist was doing that. Her guitar had a totally different tone through out the whole song, her fingers didnt line up with what I heard{at the end only]

She might be playing (low volume) but she is totally backed up by that guy on the left - he's the boss.I hear him loud and clear.

Madonna needs something else to "re-invent" herself. That beautiful Gibson slapped over a cocktail dress and cabaret high-heels is just wrong.
She looks Courtney Love-ish.

I'll remember the guitar.

Red13, I suffered through two...TWO!!!...Roberta Flack concerts back in 1996. Her name was "Starr" and she was an "actress".

I'd have rather been drawn and quartered than to have seen those shows.

Don't ask!

She played elec. guitar way back in the day, with "The Breakfast Club" & "Emmy & the Emmys".

She looked like she was playing bar chords to me - but I couldn't hear her - and her arm was a bit robotic, but hey, I enjoyed watching her show even if she doesn't have a great voice.
Those Romany Guys with her fascinated me!
They made me feel like I'd been whisked off to a Spanish Gypsy encampment to watch them all dancing by the campfire.
It was rather unusual to say the least.
And the woman is bloody fit! God, such energy. But I guess she works hard to maintain it. And it shows.
Not a "singer" but a show woman.
I think she dropped the key for "Ray of Light" quite a bit? I'm sure on the track she sings it way higher?
I have the CD single somewhere.
I must seek it out and have a listen.
