Am I the only one who likes this album?

I have seen more than a few posters savage this CD...

I like tracks: 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,11, and 12

I like your aviator better

I like "Trial By Fire", just not nearly as well as most of the other Journey albums.

And I agree with that last senmtiment as well.

It is, in my opinion, a decent album but by far not their best.

I have just seen some fairly bitter comments about it in some threads!

I believe that most think there are too many ballads and not enough rockers on it.

I will risk getting flamed here, but I think what people expected in terms of SPs voice for this CD were unrealistic. I don't think he was up to singing another "Mother, Father" by the late 1990's, ya know?

In fact, the few heavier tunes on the CD, his voice sounded a bit strained...

I think that it is one of their best. Smitty and Cain thought so also, as I recall. Perry's voice had matured so wonderfully and all the guys were at the top of their game, imo.

It's a disconnected album.


It's OK and there are parts I LOVE.

By way of comparison Arrival is much better and Raised On Radio is better than both combined.

TBF is the crown jewel of Journey's musical and lyrical evolution as a band. It's their masterpiece.

I agree. His voice sounds different on certain songs like Don't Be Down On Me Baby. I was wondering if that was one of the last ones they did for TBF because his voice sounds rough in spots on that song.

I just bought a copy of it to replace one I lost in last year's flooding incident. I'll tell you what. It's kinda tedious to listen to. Just too many slow/ mid tempo songs. Would it have killed them to rock out a little bit?
I really think ARRIVAL is better.

I'm a nuerotic completist so I upgraded to the new remaster with ICSIIYE tacked on even though I'm not a huge fan of the album.

Another part of my anal retention is the need to listen to albums in their sequential entirety and every time TBF is on I kinda can't wait for it to end.


Bottom line, I'm driving on what you're paving there.

Me too. There are some songs I really LOVE, and then other, ewww. It was definitely a more mature sounding Journey (except for the reggae thing).

I love TBF.It's was a special phase in the band's life,I'd say the mature,experienced one.
Just like I love their first albums for the freshness and the youth,I appreciate TBF for the complexity and the flavor - just like a fine wine.
They aged beautifully.

I love TBF! It was the right album to do during the time period in which it came out. Yes, it was heavy on the ballads, but considering the grammy nomination they got with WYLAW, that is what the "fans" wanted from Journey at the time.

If they could have toured for it, that CD would have been a huge favorite among all of us... think about that..
phearing, castles burning, cant tame the lion, liberty Message of love wylw live for 18 months.... I think instead of
just a nomination for the grammy, WYLAW would have one the grammy... also Journey would have been nominated
for comeback artist as well.

Too many goofy, odd, totally incidental touches to the album the date the everloving SHIT out of it.

And these anachronistic earsores bear the perry/Shirley imprimatur.

To wit: - a way overabundance of loud (melo)dramatic strings including but definately not limited to One More.
- perry on pro-tools doing the chez '90s voice over/broadcast in the middle of Castles Burning (an otherwise good
heavy, enjoyable rocker)
- the bizarre rain forrest/jungle sounds at the outset of Colors Of The Spirti
- the cringeworthy rain/thunder at the end of "It's Just The Rain."

- did I mention the loud strings on 1/2 the record?


Overall definately one of my favortie Perry performances on a recrod, though.

I think most people could find something for themselves in this music. It was lush and sensual, it was heartbreaking and melodic, it was unforgiving yet sad...a compilation of times, emotions and circumstance wrapped together and bound by time.

Just who did Journey lose that Grammy to? I'm willing to bet some industry fave, or some up and coming newcomer the 'biz' wanted to market with a Grammy nod.

Anyone? Beuller?

I love Can't Tame the Lion, Easy to Fall, and When You Love a Woman.

Neal's solo on One More is pretty hot too.
