More power to him. Genius stuff. Screw the record labels that have been screwing musicians for years.

The retailers are somewhat caught in the middle here, that I don't like, but you have to hand it to the guy for thinking outside the box.

AMEN!!! :D

I do feel bad for the retailers, as I'm sure it's going to put people out of business. On the other hand, the Artists with the talent will finally reap the rewards instead of someone in a suit who plays them like a puppet! One thing that I see as a downside though, is quality.

As it is now, Record labels front bands the money to go into pro-studios, with top notch record producers. Without all that money up front, I'm afraid the quality of the music may suffer some. There'll be people recording out of there homes like myself. We can do quite a bit with todays technology, but having that producer, or even a sound engineer makes a big difference!

It's changing that way regardless, it'll just be interesting to see what happens.

Illegal downloading was AGAIN mentioned. If the industry wanted to curtail donwloads they would produce a quality product, and release simultaneously in europe and USA. Releasing these at different dates lends itself to file sharing. And, like I said - releasing sub-par quality Cds.

Good for him. I'm sure the record companies will make up the loss of sales when Shitney Spears or some other talent-challenged pop tart decides to put out another screaching piece of crap for the tweens to buy.

Dont most of the musicians (the popular ones) have studios in their houses anyways? I know Jeff does, Friga, a few rappers, ect. I dont profess to know how GOOD those cuts are, if they are doctored later at a professional studio, ect. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

The music labels have been missing the point now for a few years already, ever since the internet got really popular and downloading became an issue they have failed to lower prices of cd's and they have failed to come up with good alternatives to go against downloading. I think that an artist can really benefit from the downloading business because their music can enter so many more households than when they only have to rely on record sales.

Yeah, most musicians have some sort of recording equiptment in their houses. A good example of what happens without the proper sound engineers/producers is to listen to Red 13. While many of you probably like it (I'm not one of those people), This is a good example. This was recorded at Friga's house, and he engineered it himself. The sound quality sucks(IMHO!). They didn't have a producer, or an outside entity to tell them what to do with these songs. The quality just isn't there! John & Neal produced this themselves, and you see the result.

Good for Prince. He's a weirdo genius, and if he can come up with a way to stick it to the record companies, more power to him. Maybe all the record execs will write "SLAVE" on their cheeks now.

"Quirk said the deal was "yet another example of the damaging covermount culture which is destroying any perception of value around recorded music."

Beyond the covermounts, the value of recorded music is already under widespread threat from the rapid rise of digital downloads. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry estimated that overall music sales worldwide fell around 3% last year as a doubling in digital sales failed to compensate for falls in physical CD sales and digital piracy."

Les Paul & Mary Ford - probably the first (and greatest) recording artists modified existing technology to record in ways never before imagined (the creators of multi-track and overdubbing). Modern recorded music owes everything to them. Beyond their technological advances they recorded QUALITY music.

I'm in agreement with the comments quoted above. The digitization (if that's a word) of music has satisfied the gluttonous, fast-food mentality for more music more quickly BUT what has it done for the QUALITY?

Aside from all of the crying over money lost here and there my question is:
Where is the next Les Paul?

People couldn't get enough of Les Paul because he and Mary put out QUALITY and had something ORIGINAL to offer. Today, there is little quality and even less originality.

WoF, I agree with your comments 100%. I'm not dishing out $18 for 3 good songs, and a bunch of filler. No way. And that's what most of today's Cds are - filler.

BUT, as far as the music that is marketed on THIS site. Having more than one release date is BY FAR the number one reason for the illegal downloading. If I'm in the USA(which I am), why would I wait 1, 2, or even 3 weeks for a CD, when it was JUST released in Europe, and within a couple of days I could get it on a P2P site?

And just while I am on that topic. Most of the people *I* know, use P2P for OOP stuff. If these record companies kept stuff IN PRINT, they'd be far less downloading.

Interesting story for ya:

About 3 or 4 years ago I was going through my cassettes, and was serious thinking about getting them all on CD. This would be a daunting task because I had well over 700. All sorts of obscure hair metal, melodic, and glam/sleeze stuff. I came across Vinnie Vincent's Invasion, and wanted to start with that one. Don't ask me why, I've always liked that stuff. Well, after finding out it was Out Of Print, I went trolling on eBay. I found many copies for WELL over $100, and also was looking for LeatherWolf's first Cd. That, too, was well over $100. I said fuck that, I'm not paying that.

So I got in touch with Chrysalis(UK), and wrote them a lengthy, in depth letter about how the Vinnie Vincent Cd was catching over $100 on eBay. I got a reply of thank you for letter. We will look into this matter and get back to you. About a WEEK later, they emailed me again telling me that they looked into it, and were now going to be in the process of re-issuing that CD. When it was released I bought it for $17.

OOP stuff is what drives my friends and I too download. Also, and I almost forgot. European bonus Tracks. I'm not spending $35 for ONE extra track. The basic cd is $18, but the Cd with the LONE bonus track is $35. That's $17 for one song. Again, no thanks, fuck you. I'll pick up that extra song on WinMx.

Anyway, that's my story.

Here's an interview with David Coverdale. He has a lot of good stuff to say about the music industry and this is back in the early 90s...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zlfy9bhAUqw

Here's another one from 2003. He talks about the music industry again and bringing music to the fans. The comment I like, though, is where he talks about his son being born and "choosing" him to be his daddy. Great comment.

Damn, great interviews. He's a great speaker as well. He's an Englander right? I like how he said he's a control freak. Does that remind us of anyone? Maybe that's what you have to be to be successful. Coverdale has one of the best rock voices in the bidness.

Actually, he's from the Minnesota area.

I find this quote by Prince from 1995 extremely prophetic:

Once the internet is a reality the music business is finished. There won't be any need for record companies. If I can send you my record direct, what's the point of having the business? I don't even have a manager any more. Would you want somebody living off your work?

I got that from this article:

Same here, I can't fucking stand his music however I have a lot of respect for his talent. He's a very smart businessman too, something to be admired in today's world of "rich one day begging for quarters the next".
