Most of us here talk about how certain singers can't hit the high notes anymore but I'm sure we all know it ain't just about that. That being said, here's a good example of a guy who sounds awesome in the lower registers.

From the "Starkers in Tokyo" acoustic set, with Adrian Vandenburg on acoustic guitar and David Coverdale on vocals, this is a song that originally appeared on their "Slip of the Tongue" album...

True. but those high notes are what made them so unique, in perry's case, its even more
impressive because of his ability to surpass the notes on the recordings for years in
live performances.

This is amazing. I never knew there was more to David Coverdale than him and Tawny Kitaen doin' their thang on that Jag. Shoulda been paying more attention.

I'm thinking it is a lot about the high notes. It's not the whole deal, but it is a significant factor. I think that is a lot of reason why people think "holy fuck" when Perry used to crank it on in the upper register. That is what turned me on when I was younger. Now with that being said, the Steel Heart dude can go way up there, but it's not the same deal. He has more of a metal tone as opposed to a smooth, crooning tone.

'Starkers in Tokyo' is really an excellent album, and I've always loved 'Sailing Ships,' both on 'Slip of the Tongue' and Starkers.'

You're right - high notes are NOT 'everything.'

They ARE essential to sing the Journey catalog, though.

And despite my coming on board to this forum just to call out 'Jeremey's fan forever' for his pathetic Hugo-bashing, I'm still flabbergasted over - and bitterly disappointed about - Journey's lack of class and sheer stupidity in letting JSS go. JSS hit ALL of the notes, had great stage presence, and, despite not being a Perry clone, did more than justice to the Dirty Dozen.

Bottom line is that JSS should be Journey's singer right now, but he's not. Sad.

I agree, but what's done is done...they have made a big mistake in my opinion...I think it's also called a faux pas!!

You'll have to bring me up to speed Rick. I do love History of the World though. "I love my peasants .... pull!"
