In another thread, someone said perfectly, "I fuckin hate Cain." I thought it was a great sentence and Matthew threw a coniption saying it's all bullshit.

I already know what most MR members think. They've turned against the third longest serving member of this band who co-wrote the majority of our all-time favourite songs in favour of a singer who sang those songs for a mere eight months.

Actually, he did. He was visibly more into the shows after JSS started kicking some ass and had several good things to say about him, from what I recall.

Dave - I think most us us noticed a lukewarm, cautious tone in Cain's interview with Andrew back in December.

Well since Friga didnt co-write (or write) anything even remotely close to the the majority of my all-time favorite Journey songs, I guess I'm allowed to think he is a loser.

Oh I don't know...the guy is one of the most successful musicians in the history of American rock music. And this year he reached Number One hit in the AC chart...which is more than most artists of his generation have managed in the 21st century.

I wish I had this guy's problems....

I just re-read the interview and I still don't get that at all and don't really even remember people here reacting that way. He did state over and over again how he wasn't sure that things were going to work out initially with Jeff but then he was pretty much glowing about how things went once Jeff learned to sing with "finesse" rather than "power" and after he got the in-ear monitors and got used to wearing them. The rest of the interview seemed pretty positive looking back.

Dave - "he wasn't sure" and "pretty much glowing" and "pretty positive" sound lukewram and cautious to me. Especially given that this interview was given to promote the new line-up.

You'll also notice in that interview that Cain expressed a certain weariness about the song-writing process - and how the atmosphere in the band can change over the slightest thing during this process.

Also - I read numerous posts on this forum which picked up on Cain's reserve. For example, Sherrie has posted about this often unless I'm totally mistaken.

Ya might like the music he co-created/created...but by all the accounts I've heard of him being an asshole...I'm glad I never met him. He's always sounded like a douchebag. I thought that before TG let ALONE what I think of him now after the whole JSS thing.

I did see him at the Sleeptrain Ampitheater last August, and he turned away from the fans who were at the meet and greet. I do not have a very high opinion of him. Frick alone couldn't break into the top ten.

And the actions of late hasn't worked well for him either. I have read an article from a Dutch magazine recently, and now all Journey is to Frick is just a job. If it is just a job, and not a passion anymore , Frick and Frack should retire Journey.

But I have no emotional investment in him being a great guy. I love his songs and I love his playing. And I love the chemistry he had with Perry and Schon.

Okay...he didn't enjoy that same chemistry with JSS...and maybe at 57 he just can't be bothered to write new Journey songs in the absence of a record deal....and he didn't call JSS even though it was Schon's call to make....so what? Does that undermine his contribution he has already made to the band since 1981?

And Sallee - why does it matter to you whether or not Cain is the kind of guy you could be friends with? Surely we're all too long in the tooth to have such high expectations of the rock stars we like?

Liam - it seems to me that people are just pissed because Cain and Schon have interrupted their stay on fantasy island.

The sad reality is...aside from a handful of die-hard obsessives like us no-one wanted the JSS line-up. The record companies, the media outlets...no-one cared...no-one put money on the table. It's a shame because the illusion felt pretty real at times but Journey have been a nostalgia touring act for years now and that's the way it was always going to stay.

Where in my post did I say anything about being friends? That is coming from left field. I said that I don't have a very high opinion of him, based on what I saw last August. That has nothing to do with friendship. It has to do with his lack of seeing fans for a few mins, instead of running the other direction. Those fans pays his salary, and a few fucking minutes isn't going to kill him. Frick has been a snooty bastard for years.

And that's where it sits with me, Matt. I can't separate their character from the music anymore. I too enjoy the classic line up and will continue to. Having met both Perry and JSS, both being very fan friendly guys, I feel burned "again" after giving them a second chance. Right or wrong, it's how I feel and I won't be putting one more nickel in Schon/Cain's pocket.

Sallee - there was a thread about this recently. Some fans had bad experiences meeting Cain. Others had positive ones.

My point is that his character - good or bad - doesn't influence the way I hear the music. If he's a turd, then I'm sorry for the fans who were disappointed - but we're not teenagers any more so maybe it was a sign to let go of certain aspects of fandom?

In fact on some level I want the guys to act like primma donnas. They're not running for office...they're not my local bank managers...they are a rock band.

Anyway...all this is easy to say given that I've never met Cain...

If Frick is a songwriter, then he should write songs, period. For himself as a solo, and for Journey as well. The record deal, or lack thereof, shouldn't stop him, or Frack one bit. Yes, Journey fans do have high expectations, and I believe most of us were really jazzed up at the prospect of some new material. Now it is flushed down the toilet. I see this "thinking about the Journey legacy" as being a copout. Frick stated in that Dutch article that Journey is just a job. No emotions, no feelings, just a job. That is where one should hang up the shingle and retire.

No one really knows if Frick's instincts are right about how the record would turn out. Maybe Frick didn't want to go in a new direction. Maybe Frick thought that his songwriting would be dwarfed by JSS. Maybe he was just plain jealous of JSS. Maybe Frick just doesn't want to WORK! Who knows! Frick is in a rut, a comfortable one that he doesn't want anyone to mess with.
