Kevin Chalfant released a Journey covers album where the songs are tuned down. If he couldn't sing them in their original key with all of the magic that a studio has to offer he certainly couldn't do it live, night after night. I recently heard him sing DSB and it was atrocious. Kevin can no longer come CLOSE to singing the catalog and those that come to SB will have a chance to hear that firsthand. He now does a mediocre job singing Journey.

Didn't you say he sounded good when you saw him a few months ago?

I am not buying what you say. I think he can handle it just fine. We'll find out in October won't we? And a half key (tuned down) still sounds amazing. Name a better Journey tribute album.... There isn't one.

I agree. Jeremey does a FAR better job than Chalfant AND sings in the original key. I'd also hands down take a boot of Lights w/Juan over Chalfant's album, or even a boot of Evolution w/Hugo. Heck, who's that Mexican tribute band, the one Mon goes on & on about? I'd take a boot of theirs too.

Kelly Hansen's versions of 'Seperate Ways', and 'Wheel in the Sky' are the best I've ever heard on a tribute. This guy can sing. Too bad Foreigner scooped him up....

He did, NIG. On everything except the lone Journey song he played...DSB. Yuck.

Even better... And Steve Smith too!! Chalfant is and has always been Herbie Herbert's 1st choice to replace Perry. Given that he was the one that handpicked Perry in the first place I have to agree with him. Chalfant would be amazing in Journey! I know not everyone will agree and that's fine. That's what makes the world go 'round huh?

SJ,

You're right. I haven't heard Chalfant live for a few years but I was disappointed that his Journey covers CD was tuned down. I was looking for the songs to be in the original key. Maybe he has lost it? He used to KICK ASS on those songs though. He was damn good a few years ago.

Yes, the whole CD is marginal at best.

I'm a big Chalfant fan but didn't even bother buying the cd, cuz they were recorded perfectly the first time. Perry probably couldn't sing them in the original key anymore either. I'd love to hear new Journey material w/ KC's writing ability

Nope, I've only heard the clips on Kevin's site. But, I wasn't not too thrilled with the clips. To be fair, I do need to hear the whole disc. I'll find time to order it this weekend. I don't think it will go well though, it is tuned down a bit and I'm not a fan of tuning down at all.

He's lost the ability to go out of his natural range. He still does a GREAT job covering his own material, but has completely lost the range necessary to cover classic Journey. Those that come to South Bend will experience it firsthand.

I think the Rich vs. Deano cage match is going to supercede anything else on Friday night. Myers is going down faster than Barry Horowitz against the Ultimate Warrior in 1989.
