SP Memphis '94

Here's a good performance of "Faithfully" from Memphis in '94.

I find it kinda funny that, at the beginning, that Steve says it's been seven years since he's been there and then says "I promise I'll never do that again, OK?"

Hmmm...It's been 13 years since then...

When I debating about trying to sneak in my video camera my friend told me to just do it, it may be the last time he ever sings again live. I told him he was full of it. I'm so glad I did. You know I am one of those types that likes to sing out loud and have fun at a concert, especially Steve Perry's. It was so diffucult to film. Security was everywhere and I just wanted to let loose and party.

I am so glad I made the effort. I'm glad people are enjoying it. I've sent it out to a few people over the years and it was bootlegged everywhere. No mind though. At least I can put it up on Youtube. I just love that thing or site or whatever.

I love the coat molestor thing. I just started calling it the coat molestor. The reason being is Steve starts to laugh and can't stop and loses his place in the bit. It makes it so unique. He did the same bit in all the concerts but this was the one I think he remembers most. I would love to hear his reaction to it after all of these years.

Anyway, what was I saying.......seemed to have lost my place again....

So true.

This one's my favorite...http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=SxQsbaBpjto&NR=1

It's remarkable the way he controls his delivery and how his voice completely opens up towards the end of the song.
Not to mention the TONS of soulfulness in that voice.

Lakeman, nice to see you posting here. :) Thanks for sharing that show with everyone -- it's the only way for us who missed that tour to get a little taste of that magic.I bet that being in the audience was an unforgettable overwhelming experience.

Love the Cupid.

The New York vids are great. I have one of them on my myspace. I think it is Don't Stop Believin.
I managed to get ahold of that complete concert eons ago in the mid 90's. I'm glad that guy posted on Youtube. Things are just so easy to watch there.

Those are great clips. I have a question though...

In several spots, SP doesn't 'go for it' instead altering the song and singing it lower. However, in other areas, he alters the song and goes higher. So it's hard for me to believe he can't hit the notes, which is what many have and are saying. Could that be one of the ways he tried to preserve his voice? I, mean, he's still hitting the high notes, but perhaps he's hitting them in a spot that he thinks he can control better. I don't know anything about voice control (or whatever you would call it) but I know he's a master at changing things up and still sounding incredible. It's pretty evident to me that he still had it in 1994, and if that's where he's at now (which many have suggested he is), I would give ANYTHING to see him perform!!!

When Steve performed live he always seemed to alter the songs a little bit. No 2 performances are the same, that to me keeps them fresh.

I also noticed he went for many of the big high notes back in 94' and let go of only a few. When I look back at some to the 80's live vids he does the same.

None of know whether he can still do it for sure now a days but I tend to think he can but not in the same way as before in the 80's. Remember the song Anyways? During the whole album he sings with a deeper fuller voice, which I love then at the end of that song he reaches down and hits that incredible note like he did in the 70's and early 80's.

Also think back to Street Talk. The song Captured by the Moment he starts out the song in such a low voice tone it barely sounds like him then picks up the pich throughout the song then ends the album with Strung Out and he sounds like he did in his early years.

So what does that tell me, I don't know but it kind of tells me he can still do it when he wants too if he is rested and his voice is in shape. You have to exercise your chords to get them to do what you want them to do. If you let them go they will get out of shape just like any other part of your body. It is a muscle.

Our Steve is getting older and like all of us it takes longer to get back in shape than we used to than when were younger and we get out of shape faster. Our bodies change. The things I used to be able to do I use to do with no problem now if I try the same things I can only do it once then I would be dead. O how fun it is to grow older but it is better than the alternitive.

So to give my opinion on the much talked about, can he still do it, I don't know but I think he could for maybe a studio album where he can control the conditions and have plenty of time and rest to get it right. Could he ever go out and do a concert tour? He would really have to train to get ready for that and not tour every night like he used to. He would have to pace himself. Love to think he still has it. Time is ticking and all we can do is hope and pray that one day he will decide to give it one more round.

If he never does then we have a wonderful catalog of music and videos to remember him by and wish him the best. Either way he has touched all of us more than we can ever pay him back for.

Whoever said his voice opens up in places is so right. I noticed that in the boots I have of him in Memphis (thanks Lakeman) and New York. There are certain songs where he just pulls it out and it's like no time has passed at all. Thanks to all of you who risked getting kicked out so that the not so fortunate among us may see.

Here is a prime example of his voice opening up. Anyone who says this isn't as good as the original doesn't have ears!

I still remember that tour...3rd row at the Beacon in NYC.

What a great f**kin show. I am so glad I got to see one of my heroes on stage that close, and aas it turns out probably the last time too.

Sad, but hey. I saw the show! I gotta find my ticket stub for that one...
