We are taking a little survery here for something big in 2008. As a radio listener what would you want to see as a promotion on a radio station? What prize would get you really worked up, enough to tell others and listen intently to win?

bigger discounts to those that pay to advertise .... some of these spots costs $50 for 1 min. ...and its getting higher...but , if you buy 100 spots you get them at $20 a spot,, still too high .. Clear Channel seems to be selling off some of their cities so they must be feeling a pinch somewhere,,

A few years ago I was working at this radio station and was asked to put together 2 different contests (questions were about the shows,DJs,contents of the shows, etc.) and I came up with 2 prizes: 1 year of free gas for anybody who had a driver license (1 full tank per month),the other prize was 1 year of free beer for anyone over 21 (a 6 pack per day for 365 days).
Guess which prize was the most hunted?

Many more thirsty listeners than drivers, that's for sure!
The ratings were sky high!

I'm thinking you weren't part of a corporate radio group. They aren't real humorous when it comes to alcohol promotions, too many liabilities. Good idea though!
One of the ideas that has come up is "live free for a year". Us paying rent, groceries, utilites, etc.

True,it was a local station serving the county, much less problems with alcohol promotions, but since then rules have changed a lot.
The Live Free idea is great! In fact anything that has to do with peoples necessities is guaranteed to draw listeners.
Sending them in luxury vacations is always succesful, too.

Angie,
One promotion idea could be to let the contest winner be an honorary DJ. (For an hour or two with their favorite radio show on your station.)
I have always thought about doing that .....it sounds like fun.
You could play all the Journey you want to.

(in between your standard play list)

I like the idea of paying one of their bills for a month. Or if you are looking for college students maybe pay their books for a year. Or how about having them go to a super market and give them five minutes to grab things and they get to keep it and you foot the bill. Who couldn't use free groceries. You can exlude beer and cigarettes.

Honestly, I hate the radio. The radio exists for no other reason than to TELL people what to listen, and what SHOULD be popular. There is no ART in radio anymore. Listeners are consumers. They've always been - but today it is worse.

Hmm, that has nothing to do with the question I asked...if you have something to contribute to THAT question, feel free to respond, but since you don't listen to radio, you probably don't.

OK, I'll try.
I would suggest that the radio station take a survey to find out what people actually LIKE about radio, and what they DISLIKE. Then radio can be fine-tuned to better represent their listeners.
Nobody wants to hear the same song 4X an hour. Nobody wants to hear the same 2 tracks from an album. Remember 'Album sides'? Perhaps radio should go back to that format. Perhaps more in-studio guests. Like a 'Rockline' format. Perhaps a contest, or SET of contests where the winner(s) would get to pick out the programming for that day? For starters......

Still has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the question I asked, but thanks for playing!
Not to mention if you are listening to a radio station that plays the same song four times an hour, you deserve what you get! Turn the channel!

Oh I agree. If you have that much money I would go for a vehicle. That would certainly get attention.
