"Separate Ways", with "Escape" era vocal treatment.
What the hell happened between 82 & 83....to cause THAT much of a difference, vocally...?

About 125 tour dates?
Seriously, it's not that different from this:

1. I was asking my question rhetorically, and
2. It was
bizarre to hear the song that way.
That's all....

Wow, that is amazing. Sounds like a second puberty - I'm not trying to be funny, the entire tone is different. Wow! And is it just me or back-to-back it looks like Perry aged quite a bit in that year. It's like a dividing line between "early" and "later" Perry.
Thanks for posting the links - never saw that first one. Wierd to hear SW in an Escape venue.....

Nora's 1st link is live & her 2nd link is a studio version. That can account for part of the difference. Check out my link from 83 for a better comparison as that is also live.

You need to compare your '82 video to this 83' live video. I think you'll find it's not THAT much of a difference:

That's what I said! Comparing live & studio are not equal parallels.

Nora is right though. I have a ton of boots, and I know you remember back in the good old days, when he would sing Wheel in the Sky, during the guitar solo he would do that stratospheric aaaahhhhhh. He stopped doing that for the most part toward the end of '83, or he would do a worked around version of it. I think the Departure and Escape tours took a lot out of his voice and the few dates they did in '82 and that big tour in '83 really hurt him. I was watching that '79 Tokyo video last night, and there was just almost no limit to how high he could go. He over toured his voice and aged also. Hell he was what 32 on the Escape tour?

He also looks like he put on a few pounds by the time the Frontiers tour rolled around. I'm not saying he got fat because he obviously isn't but his face looks a little fuller on those '83 vids than in did on the 81-82 vids.

I think it was some kind of steroidal anti-inflammatory he was taking that make his face like that. I've taken Prednisone at one dose or another for 18 years, and I can pick someone out of a crowd that is taking a heavy dose of it. I've seen a couple of videos where he had the trademark 'moon face'. He may have had a gastrointestinal disorder that he had to take them for, or maybe he was taking them to reduce inflammation in his vocal cords, but it sure showed.

There was one interview where he talked about how everyone else was hung up on weight loss & working out. He, on the other hand, loved his beer & pizza, he said & could care less about a few lbs here & there.
Ur right about steroids tho! Tell me about it! I'm living it these days. Thing is, I have to take them say the docs. Sucks!

I actually preferred his "Frontiers voice" over his Departure voice.

Me too. I'm lucky that they haven't put weight on me as much as they do some.

I think one thing your hearing also, was the fact that it was a brand new song in 1982. He was still feeling out the song, and hadn't hit his comfort zone with it yet. Also, all of the songs they recorded would get tweaked by the producers/management, so there are always a little differences. I remember reading a Perry interview, where he said they had him change some of the phrasing of Open Arms. It was nothing major, but he never liked the studio version (at least that part of it). He said it always bothered him.
Also, as someone else touched on, he had toured for a year! That will do a lot to a voice, which gave him a little more rasp in his voice. Finally, the other factor is that you're comparing a live recording to a studio recording. Night and day! I have to say though, there are things I liked better in the live version that I wish would have made it to cd. By far, my favorite Journey song!

Studio/Live is apples/oranges BUT I do hear some "grit" in his voice in the live performance that I think was pushed for Frontiers as well as Street Talk.
