Being an artist of the painting , but not so much the drinking nature, I think there is some fantastic album art...Yes was the first band that came to mind, but there are so many others ...the trouble is there are that many I have developed a brain hole and all the information has suddenly escaped me ........but im working on it!!

Dave, you've posted quite a few great ones. A couple favorites of mine, as well particularly Powerslave. That was one I bought solely because of the cover. I've been a casual student of Ancient Egyptian mythology since childhood (but was never an Iron Maiden fan) and was totally intrigued by that cover. Super cool packaging all around. I like how they included the lyrics and used little heiroglyphics in the liner notes, too. The music is awesome as well. Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Aces High, 2 Minutes To Midnight, Losfer Words come to mind.

I bought Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son because I was a JOURNEY fan! Of course, "I'm your seventh son..." is the line from JOURNEY's Mother, Father and I was intrigued that Iron Maiden referenced it and wanted to see how they'd use it:
Here they stand brothers them all
All the sons divided they;d fall
Here await the birth of the son
The seventh, the heavenly the chosen one

It's a compelling song lyrically as it goes on to describe his being born "of a woman" and then tempted by evil - kind of the Jesus myth compressed into a synoptical song. Ultimately, their "seventh son" is in the same vein of JOURNEY's Mother, Father in that a seventh son is simply an ancient term for "saviour" or someone who has the voice and vision to guide others out of a situation.

I recall Iron Maiden taking a lot of heat for "selling out" with that album as it contanis Moonchild and Can I Play With Madness which were considered too pop radio-friendly. I think it's another one of their best efforts despite that.

Hey, I've always wanted to ask you about your "dark" interests in music and art. It seems to conflict with your staunch Christianity/religiosity which I often see flashes of in your posts not to mention your policing this forum of taking the Lord God's name in vain. Many, many, many people once believed (and maybe still do) that Iron Maiden, Rush, Judas Priest, Kansas, and Whitesnake (which you've listed here) and even JOURNEY were/are in league with Satan based on their album cover art. How do you rectify your interests to people like that?

Policing the forum? I generally ignore it but it occasionally irritates me, so I wouldn't say that I'm policing the forum. I've only spoken up twice about it.

Anyway, as far as the whole Satanic thing...There are some artists who are definitely into that stuff but, for the most part, it is just comic book-type stuff, so I don't take it seriously. I suppose that may make me a "sinner" or "backslider" to some, but oh well.

As for Rush, it was the use of the pentacle (as opposed to pentagram) on the "2112" album cover that put them in that group. The problem is, in the story of "2112", the "red star" was the symbol of the "Solar Federation". The Solar Federation in the story were the bad guys and, hence, the red star being their symbol. So the story itself identifies that symbol as the symbol of the evil federation. Then the back cover, which shows the naked man silhouetted against the red star with his hands extended towards the red star, as if he's pushing it away. The band have said that this is supposed to symbolize the natural man's struggle against evil.

I'm not sure why you have Kansas in that list, though.

I'm talking about when I was a kid - back when JOURNEY was big. I think parents took offense to the "stoner" album covers of Infinity, Evolution, Deprature, and Captured. The ancient art symbolism of them struck certain nerves amongst religious fundamentalists. You may recall also, that the band were all thought to be homosexuals as they were from San Fran.

The question was, "How do you rectify your interests to people like that?" In other words, how do you explain to other fellow Christians your interests in art that employs "Satanic" images/symbology? Don't your interests clash with your religion?

I don't rectify them. I don't really hang out with anyone that has a problem with it, so the subject never comes up. As far my interests clashing with my religion, I just don't see it. As far as I know, the artists I listen to don't use that kind of stuff in any more than a comic book fashion. If I thought they did, I wouldn't support them by buying their stuff. There are artists, such as King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Glenn Danzig, etc., that take that stuff seriously, so I just don't listen to their music or support them in any way. If I thought that Iron Maiden, for instance, were serious in the occult stuff they've written about in their songs over the years, I would get rid of their stuff.

One thing I've always found curious is how some who bash rock music for its decadence or supposed occult leanings seem to have no problem with movies that deal with the same subject.
