I think he's sounding better now than at any point since the early 90s. I don't know if he's quit smoking or what but good for him. Too bad he smoked all those years or there's no telling what he could still be capable of.

You know he wasn't smoking while he was at the Conservatory. Professors rip the balls off vocal/opera/music theatre majors who smoke. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing people piss away talent because of Marlboros.

Rob Halford also smoked for quite a long time. It seems that what hurt his voice more, though, was the drug and alcohol abuse. I do remember Ronnie James Dio saying that he thinks drinking alcohol actually is worse for the voice than smoking is.

as far as this clip..... i dont get the song.. everything up to Empire was amazing... this song passes me by...

I love Geoff.He is one of those singers with immediately identifiable voices.He sure took care of it.

As a fan of melodic Rock music, and music in general - I must say that I've GROWN out of the awe and allure of his 'gimmick' voice. That 'thing' he was doing in that radio station was painful to watch and listen to......

He was struggling. Point black. His signature sound/voice gimmick doesn't quite cut it anymore.

Kinda like Jon Oliva. And Dave will back me on this I'm sure.....Jon had this high-pitched signature yell-type thing he used in songs like 'Sirens'....doesn't work nowadays. His voice is shot as well.

And to some extent, so is Dickinson's. He had/has a habit of extending EVERY last sound of every line in the song. Bad idea. it doesn't work today. It sounds foolish.

Tate, Oliva, and Dickinson.....the vocal gimmicktry doesn't cut it anymore....sorry.

I'll agree with you on Oliva but Tate still sounds great, in my opinion. Can't quite hit the notes like he used to but he sounds good in that clip I posted.

I only heard of them quite recently when I saw this video on VH1 and was immediately captivated...great sound & voice:

I'm a fan of Dickinson's but have to agree here with the exception of calling their singing "gimmicktry". Every generation of music has had it's gimmicks or sounds. I can't think of any names of any popular artists from the 20's but back then every singer had that certain tone - you know that ethereal warble that is typically associated with horror movies? I'm not sure but I suspect it was used so that vocals could be more clearly heard over the primitive victrolas and radio. In any case it was the sound back then. The 30's ushered in the brash, larger-than-life carnival tone. The 40's had that wise-guy, James Cagney-type thing that you hear in gangster movies. Etc, etc. Then there's the metal sound of the 80's. It's fine but as you say it's not timeless. I can listen to it but it quickly wears thin and I've got to change the CD! I had to stop this video about a minute or two after he started singing. He sings fine but it sounds so contrived.

It matters because YOU'VE made it a point to compare the two of them, by saying you've heard similar critiques about Steve Perry.

You can't just dismiss a singer because they sound "contrived". That's the same kind of criticism that Steve Perry has received in some quarters. I love Perry's voice but I can see where someone might think that he's being "contrived". Just pointing out that just because Tate's not your cup of tea, doesn't mean that he's faking it any more or less than other great singers that we love.

Being someone's 'cup o' tea' isn't the point. I LOVE Dickinson, but his style is out of style. Tate's 'seal bark' thing just doesn't cut it anymore. Besides, him having to completely do a 'Joe Cocker' to pull it off - makes it even more lame.

When you pick a 'style' to sing early in your career, you must be bound to it's restrictions later in life....Tate is done.

I'm not big into American Idol, but I do know this. There is a difference between having a GREAT voice, and knowing HOW to use it.

Last year's winner had a great voice, but doesn't knkow HOW to sing. Tate is in the same boat. May still have a great voice, but the 'seal bark' gimmick ain't working.

Dave, with all due respect, it is not a matter of taste.

I refer you to Cal Ripken. Whether you like him of not, his last FIVE All-star appearances were popularity contests. He held back the Orioles by staying in the game and taking up a roster spot. His skills were well gone by that point. And I LOVED the guy.

I liked Tate back around Mind Crime and Empire. His voice was top-notch. All I'm saying is it isn't anymore. Much like the loons thinking Perry can still belt it out. He can't. But since they worship the guy, they cling to this fantast about 'how it was', and equate it to 'how it STILL is'....

And yes, we listen to out of date music. But it is great music, that was recorded when voices were still young. So where the product is out of date, the style is as it was 20 years ago. Big difference.

Sean, it is TOTALLY a matter of taste. It always is when you're discussing any kind of art that you're interested in and someone else isn't. Anyway, you're using my argument now. I already said the guy can't hit the high notes anymore. I still love the guy's voice as it is now even though it's nowhere near what it used to be.

BTW, after watching the video again, where do you get the 'Joe Cocker' reference. I don't see anything reminiscent of a Cocker performance.

I'm seeing the 'ryche with 'Sabbath & Alice Cooper next month - can't wait!
