OT: Piggybacking

Our DSL router bit the dust last night so our wireless network & internet is out of commission. However, one of my neighbors has apparently been so kind as to not hide their network ID or require a password, so I'm piggybacking their internet connection.

Many thanks, whoever you are.

I'm in Indiana, so unless they've got a REALLY strong signal, I'm pretty sure it's not them.

I honestly would go over and pay them if I knew who they were.
They have helped with my sanity and boredom.

Atta boy and atta girl.

Remember, "if you aren't cheating, you aren't trying."

I wouldn't call it cheating since the neighbors are sending unsecured signals into my property. As far as I'm concerned, once the signals enter my property, they are mine to use.

while you may not intend so, to use another person's internet access account without their permission is technically illegal.

HOWEVER..... what must be understood, is that that the door of the trap looks just like the other door.

It is possible to put one's machine and info at risk by accessing someone's (who we do not know) network.
By virtue of the fact that we are on someone's network, they could access us, at the same time, and if we are not configured otherwise, would not know.
It has been prosecuted successfully, so nowadays, using free access points has been something of a different tact, to do so without unforeseen consequences.

"Wardriving" is the act of cruising commercial / business areas and finding unsecured networks.

In Europe, people would leave little marks of chalk"Warchalking" on the sidewalk indicating network Signal Strength, direction, etc.

I wasn't aware of that. Guess I'll be signing off. Our new DSL router is coming today anyway.
