I wonder if Steve Perry....

has ever thought of buying the catalog to Journey's music ala Michael Jackson with The Beatles'? The guy has to find SOME way to spend all of that loot. Who owns those songs and does anyone think that this has ever crossed his mind? I bet he'd like to look after his "babies." I don't think the image is too far gone...yet. Any thoughts?

He's doing that already...I think there's a handshake agreement in place that perry's teh custodian of classic journey, like schon(doesn't have the patience for remaster production)/Cain let him keep the masters up to date.
lot's of people bash the new catalog releases as cash-in but I LOVE them.

I love the remasters also - especially the bonus "live" versions of the various songs. While I think a lot of singers/groups don't sound as good live as on recorded versions, I truly believe that Journey (with SP) sound even better live than the studio versions (if you can imagine that).

I just recently heard a DJ on the radio talking about Jackson & the Beatles catalog & they said he had one of the songs placed in a Pampers commercial! That's one thing SP wouldn't allow (I can't stand when great songs are cheapened by product association - it just feels wrong). I think he has a greater respect for the songs than any of the others, which is why he wanted to know how DSB would be placed in the Sopranos episode.

Uh Journey sold out AWYWI for a Ford commercial a couple of years ago. So selling out for product placement is not something that Journey or SP are above.

By the way, IMO, selling your song for a commercial is not selling out, it's more like cashing in. They made a worthwhile song, and are reaping the benefits.
Anyone see Aerosmith? They have signed on with NASCAR ever week for the remainder of the year. That has to pay big money.

OK, just don't peddle any "Perry has too much integrity to license songs out for the hell of it" crap.
Like Chief said, they cashed in on the car commercial (guess Cain did not).

The Ford motor company, like it or not, is an American icon. Putting your song in a car commercial for them is hardly selling out. Now if it were for some shit foreign car company like Hyundai, then yes, that would be cheapening the song. Steve Perry has said MANY times that they turn down the vast majority of offers for their songs, and I'd bet my right nut, left big toe and spleen that most bands do NOT do that. Steve Perry respects the name, the songs and the places that they appear more than anyone else with say so. I doubt Neal would turn down any offer that made him enough for another bottle of Propecia.

I don't have a problem with it all, San Juan.
It's the band's/his prerogative.

Yes, I remember about that one now.

I guess I don't really like the idea myself, so I shouldn't have said it as if I know what SP would or wouldn't do. Although, I'll admit car commercials are a bit different...it represents something more. In other words, we associate music with cars because we have car radios, CD players...it represents freedom, enjoyment...cars & music go hand in hand. Whereas, diapers just don't tie in with the Beatles.

Just look how cautious he was with DSB Sopranos deal. Do you think Neal would have thought it out that far or just leaped for some quick $$$$ ?

eddie van halen once stated that he would rather his version was out there ,rather than another version of his song "Right Now",, the company was going to use the song anyway , so why not "he" make the money for it...
although ..Yoko released
Instant Karma for a Nike commercial many years ago,, and fans hated her even more for it...

Is Chuck N Larry the movie with Adam Sandler as a firefighter? So, this song placement had to get approved by SP & JRNY, too? All those shows (Laguna Beach, My name is Earl, etc.) that used a Journey song had to get approved first?

God help me, I agree with EVH. Why shouldn't HE make money for a song he played on? There is a certain logic to that. Yoko, on the other hand, I didn't know the fans could hate her MORE...

ok. I am going to ask a really stupid question, but when a movie, commercial etc. uses one of Journey songs (for example) is the money that good, or do they (Journey) do it mostly for promotional purposes???

I would say a band that was hungry, and wanted to keep their name in the lights would do it for BOTH reasons you stated; however, Journey is in cash in mode.
Friga got a reported 20K for the use of faithfully in Talladega Nights. Who knows what he and SP got for Open Arms in the new Sandler film.
They(Journey), do it for money...They are all about money.

Thanks for the answer! I have always wondered about it.
