These asshole say some nasy shit about Journey. For example: "We can pass over Journey's early incarnation as a Frisco hippie band ("Wheel in the Sky") and go straight to the moment when the band figured out that its meal ticket was Steve Perry, who clobbered power ballads like an old Italian lady with an umbrella catching a pickpocket on bingo night."
"Best of all, or maybe just most of all (the distinction is meaningless with Journey), there was "Don't Stop Believin'," a perfect cheese-metal hymn to streetlight people everywhere..."
I don't think these fuckbags know a damn thing about good music, and what the hell is cheese metal anyway?

No no no. People, that is the greatest endorsement ever. Journey was a dynamic machine, so good, I mean so goddamned good, that the critics hated them. Steve Perry was attacked because he sang about matters of the heart and not matters of politics...Rolling Stone is archaic and without merit. This excites me as a classic Journey fan...There was NO band, No band in the Land or the World, who could carry this bands equipment in the 80's...THAT is fact.

They have some good points, as brutal as they were. They weren't shit before SP and haven't been shit since. They weren't shit at times with SP. Journey were a 5 year flash in the pan. That flash was brilliant though.
They made some excellent, timeless music in their heyday, but that's no more. They haven't been truly significant for nearly 25 years.
I agree with you though, DSB wasn't cheese-metal, it was an American anthem. It fit like a glove in those days. One of the best songs with some of the best hooks ever written. When it came on the radio, there was only one thing to do. Turn it up! Now days I'm sick to death of it, but I do remember how I loved it when it was fresh. What a great tune.

Rolling Stone types are also who votes on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - a laughable entity. It's a badge of honor for bands NOT to be voted into.

Thanks Larry, I mean, Bruce was HUGE with Born in the USA and U2 had Joshua, BA had Reckless, and even REO had Hi Infidelity, but none of these had the continium that Journey had...not even close.

Yes, as well as your ethnic diversity. Rap bands getting into the RnR HOF?????? Bullshit. It's all politically correct garbage. Arena Rock and Shock Rock completely discriminated against. How the hell Alice Cooper and Kiss aren't even nominated, as well as mega selling bands like Journey, Rush, The Moody Blues, and more - you tell me? Hell Deep Purple isn't in, but every guitar player in the world learns "Smoke on the Water" immediately, first thing after picking up a guitar!
But soul, rap and country artists are getting in at the whim of some doped up ex-hippies with a superiority complex. I hope they all die in a hideous fashion and go to the afterlife realizing that Bob Dylan couldn't win a karoake contest at the Special Olympics.

Think about it - Journey broke up, he stopped singing, and bam! Fucking environment went to shit.
Critics always hate what normal people love.
Indeed he
was attacked needlessly. And HOW do you attack a song like "Don't Stop Believin'"?
That's like purposely killing puppies or baby bunnies or something.

I don't think Dylan should've been up there singing. Ok, he wrote some great songs in an important time in history, but he should've let someone else sing them.

can you believe that fans .. 1000's of them protested dylan and burned his albums when he decided to play electric guitar and not acoustic on an album,, 1965 or so... was a BIG DEAL!!! time makes
important things seem so trivial..

I love Bob Dylan--"Time Out of Mind" has some beautiful songs on it with beautiful lyrics. His music is timeless to me, too. I also love this:

There is one man that was a writer for Rolling Stone mag.............. is now the head of the RR Hall of Fame. Jan Wenner......... he is the guy who really makes the decisions on who is in or out. Yes, he does have a committee...... But I think Wenner has the final decision power. The committee, I think, is full of Wenner yes men/women.

rolling stone nor the hall of fame have a freaking clue......
why isn't journey in the hall

why isn't rush in the hall?
why isn't deep purple in the hall?
why isn't alice cooper in the hall?
these bands together collectively have probably sold over a quarter of a billion records.
but wait grandmaster flash, the sex pistols got in?

Speaking of Jan Wenner,I guess this will explain a LOT.
Was written last year, can't recall by whom, but it's spot on.
Never Mind the Hall of Fame
"The Hypothesis: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a meaningless act of supreme egoism by an arrogant rich guy.
The Facts: Jan Wenner has been the editor of Rolling Stone Magazine since its inception in 1967. RS was at one time the journal of the revolution and is now a vehicle by which faceless twenty-something one hit wonders can appear half-dressed on the cover of a formerly major magazine (that makes me sound like an old coot myself, huh?). You'd think this would satisfy Jan, but oh no. Because old Jan is a megalomaniac who truly believes that HIS tastes are YOUR tastes in music.
But is there anyone who has the nerve to stand up to Jan's rewriting of rock history? Apparently. Sort of...
Artists are eligible for Wenner's Hall of Fame 25 years after they release their first record. Once voted in, they get together in a masturbatory ceremony at a hall in Pennsylvania that is partially funded by federal tax dollars.
Make no mistake, though: These are not the most important artists or the best artists of the past 25 years. These are Jan Wenner's favorite artists. And Jan has specific tastes. First off, no progressive rock artists, which means no Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Soft Machine, Robert Fripp, Yes, Brian Eno, no John Cale or Lou Reed solo. No Captain Beefheart, Moody Blues, or Van Halen. The Velvet Underground was eligible for close to ten years before they got in. Meanwhile, David Crosby and Paul McCartney are in multiple times(!). Oh, and Wenner awarded himself a Lifetime Achievement Award a couple years back. Nice.
Neil Young always promised he'd blow the lid off the whole sham if they ever inducted him. But once inducted, he cried at the podium. Van Morrison accepted the induction, but refused to show up, RSVP'ing "Not able to come. -- V" on a hotel napkin.
But this year, finally, someone has flat-out refused to be inducted. Unfortunately, it's the Sex Pistols, which means John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten). I'm no big fan of Lydon, but it's a start. It would be refreshing if more artists would refuse Jan Wenner's little taxpayer-funded fantasy. Lydon went so far as to issue an open, profanity-laced letter complaining about everything from Wenner himself to the $15,000 cost of just getting in the door at the ceremony.
So whom do you back when it comes to Wenner vs. Rotten? Well, Rotten, of you have any sense at all. Although, to be honest, Johnny might just be pissed that the Pistols have been eligible for about six years and were only now invited to the party.
When I get rich (hold your breath on that one), maybe I'll start my own little Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and tell you what YOU liked back in the 90's. For the record, YOU liked Nurse with Wound, Legendary Pink Dots, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, The Microphones, Neutral Milk Hotel, Aphex Twin, and quite a few others.
The Conclusion: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a meaningless act of supreme egoism by an arrogant rich guy."
That sums it up nicely.

Def Leppard should be in already, hands-down. So should Boston. If the Mamas and the Papas, whose contribution to music was one fairly catchy hippy tune, are in, Boston should be in there based on the first record itself. No-one had ever made a record that sounded anything like it, and it's sold over 30 million units to date. The Leps' contribution to melodic metal, JE's present vocal problems notwithstanding, is irrefutable and very significant. Pyromania and Hysteria back-to-back? That's as great as Moving Pictures and Signals, Escape and Frontiers, Mindcryme and Empire, VH I and II, and Harem Scarem's debut record and Mood Swings.

i agree def leppard and boston both need to be there also.hell def leppard has two ten million selling albums back to back in their catalog.who has done that plus do it back to back.no one.very few have even one ten million seller if that.boston and foreigner both blazed the path for journey a couple years later to navigate toward platinum status.
guns n roses is on the cover of the new rolling stone and they are the first band in years that i have actually liked that they put on the cover.[/i]

I agree about the twist. Unfortunately, only hardcore JOURNEY fans will appreciate it. The uglier fact remains that JOURNEY is perceived as a karaoke tribute of themselves:
"The band fell apart, reunited, and recorded with both Perry and his sound-alike replacement, Steve Augeri. Greatest Hits captures Journey in all its mullet-tastic splendor. But it's still no substitute for the karaoke bar: To really comprehend the music of Journey, to understand what Steve and the guys were trying to say, you have to go there and join the streetlight people, as the lights go down in the city. Especially when somebody gets drunk enough to tackle "Don't Stop Believin'."
This echoes what MANY people think. Just the other day someone at work started singing to a JOURNEY song that was on the radio. I asked, "Are you preparing for your audition with JOURNEY?" He replied, "What - did that guy who tried to look and sound like Perry die - what was his name - didn't it rhyme with Perry's - Aw-gary or something?"
I can't tell you how many times I've heard this! I'm not at all surprised to hear Rolling Stone say the same things. Rolling Stone aren't the bad guys. They're not snobs. They're simply echoing the opinions of many others.
It's funny to me how we allow ourselves the freedom to bash on JOURNEY for what we believe are indiscretions but jump all over others for voicing the same!

What I've found in myself is that when I am listening to a Journey CD, DSB and Open Arms are skipped right over in favor of the lesser-known songs. But, if I'm at work, or riding in the car with the radio on, and one of these songs comes on in the midst of songs by other artists, I hear it differently, kinda the same way I did back then. Probably just more evidence that I'm a total kook, but that's just me!
We have a small local radio station here that I play at work. It's a 'light rock' station that plays LOTS of Journey and SP. The girls in my office are all in their early to mid-20's and didn't have any real clue who Journey was a year ago. Now they not only know 'the voice' each time they hear it, but a few days ago I caught one of them singing along!!!! VICTORY!

I am exactly the same way. For some reason when it comes on the radio I will listen, but like you, I'll skip over it on the CD. Same with OA. I don't know why that is.
Pretty cool that you're giving those girls something worthwhile to listen to. Soon they'll be going to concerts with you. lol

Fuck RS and the R&RHOF! They both are meaningless in the bigger picture. Fuck 'em!
The HWOF is credible enough to me that Journey was a relevant band.
