Check out AP on this Van Halen cover. Some of it sounds like SP in the "Oh Sherrie" style.

On the Rush cover, doesn't sound at all like SP, actually sounds a little like Geddy.

Hells yeah!

Except, the band sucks big time.

I'm seriously confused... Maybe I just have tougher standards? I don't know. I'm really at a loss for words. I'm seeing SO MANY posts by people saying this guy sounds like Perry. Someone even commented that "he has the range and power of Perry". Are you kidding me? Go back and listen to some live Steve Perry for god's sake. Everyone's gotta have the Captured album, right? Listen to it again, PLEASE. Even when Perry was burned out on the ROR tour his vocals were miles above this guy.

By the way, Arnel MURDERED the van halen song in this thread. He sounded awful! He strained to hit those notes and missed by a country mile. I'm seriously hearing a talented karaoke singer here. He'd win contests at the local bar, but that's about the extent of it. To my ear, he has a very generic forgettable voice.

I showed this clip to a friend (and Journey fan) and she said, he's lip synching to Perry's vocals.

She said, look how he's covering his mouth with the mike and his hands. She doesn't cruise this forum so knew nothing about AP so yeah, lots of people are hearing SP in his Journey covers.

Yeah, I guess I just don't get it dude. But you know what? When someone doesn't hear Steve Perry for a while, and they then hear a cover of a Journey song, their first response is to say "he sounds like Steve Perry". Doesn't make it so. I seem to recall reviews of JSS Journey fronted concerts saying the same thing about Soto sounding like Steve Perry too. Again, doesn't make it true.

Guess it's in the ear of the beholder, huh? Seems to me most beholders are deaf! lol...

By the way, just saw it was YOU who said this guy has the same range and power of Perry, LMFAO!!!! Seriously, go listen to side by side live version of these songs by Perry and Arnel. If you don't hear a difference, well, I don't know what to tell you. I'll just take your opinion (which you're entitled to) with a bucket of salt.

Cheers-

I dont like the vocals ,or the idea,But I dont think he is lipping,he is not in Journey yet,If they hire him ,then it could happen at any time.I hear it live,of course that will change if he is hired. If it is not dead on{or close] you will get a tape of course. Thats what has been played the last 3 years anyway

Given, not what Perry could do on his first 3 Journey albums but stronger than SP's on RoR. Listen to Perry on "Suzanne", raspy as all get out.

I guess I should ammend it to mean the range of the Escape and Frontiers era. None of the clips show him singing the early stuff.

I hear a difference 'cause I've listened to Journey for years. I still say Arnel is one of the closest to Perry's voice I've ever heard (Jason Kelty more for the early albums).

Remember, we're comparing Youtube video sound quality to studio recordings. I'm amazed what comes through from Arnel.

Th VH tune is difficult because he's trying to emulate a lot of Sammy's grit. Sammy's grit actually helps him hit the high notes - it's got the opposite effect with Arnel as his voice is more naturally smooth. No big deal.

Here's something I don't understand. From what I read, Arnel has experience and even past recording contracts. Why is he being backed by such a horrible band? You would think, if he is that popular in Hong Kong and the Philipines that he would have better musicians.

Your friend is 100% incorrect. No lipping at all. Doesn't even sound all that much like Perry...sounds like Arnel to me.

Sorry, I beg to differ. There's a difference between attempting to insert a gravel sound into your voice and straining to hit a note. I know the difference and that's strain you hear there. If it wasn't strain, the note would be ON PITCH. It's not. It's off.

Dude has a voice. I'm not saying he doesn't. But to my ear, he's only slightly better than Augeri. Like I said, I have high standards.

I'm getting the feeling that Neal wants a front man who's talents don't over shadow his. After years of being in Perry's shadow, he wants the band to be about him, not the singer. Knowing that melodic rock doesn't equal record sales anymore coupled with experiencing general apathy from crowds to their post Perry era recordings, I think the group has resigned itself to being an oldies act and just want someone up front who can go through the motions on stage without embarrassing the rest of the group (and be easy to deal with backstage). I think that's why they chose Augeri over John West in the first place. West's chops are miles above Augeri's and Neal even said he sounded more like Perry than Augeri in his audition. But Augeri is a really nice, easy going pleasant mannered human being. Someone Neal knew he wouldn't have to compete for the spotlight with.

I can screech like Brian Johnson in his hey day. I can also grit it out like Sammy. I can also be as smooth as butter. My natural voice is a high, loud, full-frontal attack therefore when I do my Brian and Sammy it sounds "like" them but it also sounds fake because it's unnatural. Also, my impressions of them make it difficult for me to hit certain notes because I'm out of my element.

All I'm saying is that Arnel's trying to capture the grit of the song and it seems to me that in doing so he's getting away from his natural voice which results in making it difficult to hit certain notes. I think the bottom line here is that YES I agree he's having a little trouble with the VH tune but it's not because he can't sing or hit the notes.

You say he's slightly better than SA however, you've yet to hear a GOOD recording of him. IMO the recordings are all CRAP but I can still hear his talent come through.

I think Neal has wanted the spotlight in the past however if he's wised up (which I think he has) then he's realized that his genius shines when he plays the part of PARTNER and SUPPORTER. I guess we'll see eventually.

Hi Wheels,
I understand what you're saying. I was in a band back in the day. We covered Van Hagar and Bon Jovi endlessly. I didn't dare cover Journey. Too hard to sing. I'm not good enough. I can admit that, lol... And while I agree that attempting something outside of your natural leanings can throw you off, I've heard this same problem from Arnel on other clips. He can't hold the high notes. Every high note I've heard him reach, he looks to drop as soon as possible. It's a strain for him to be up there and you can hear it. Not that I blame him, these are hard songs to sing. But if he's being considered as the front man for Journey, there's a higher standard that needs to be upheld. There are few who can do it, but the ones who can do it haven't been chosen (ie. John West). I just don't see the quality in this guy over John West or JSS. This choice baffles me.

Wheels Of Fyre wrote:You say he's slightly better than SA however, you've yet to hear a GOOD recording of him. IMO the recordings are all CRAP but I can still hear his talent come through.

True. But my ear is good enough to hear beyond the quality of the recording. I'm hearing his pitch, his tone, his inflection (which lacks emotion). I disagree about his talent level. He's got a great voice for the likes of Survivor or Bad English. Not for Journey. Again, there's a standard to measure up to. I'm sure someone will post a clip of a good recording of him with Journey at some point, and I'll give it a listen, but I'm pretty sure my opinion will still be he's only a little better than Augeri.

Wheels Of Fyre wrote:I think Neal has wanted the spotlight in the past however if he's wised up (which I think he has) then he's realized that his genius shines when he plays the part of PARTNER and SUPPORTER. I guess we'll see eventually.

From your mouth to God's ears, but I doubt that's the case. I think you're projecting what we all know to be true into a man who doesn't know better. Why else would he have picked Augeri over John West? There's an obvious dramatic difference in the talent level there, you know?

He's awesome. Honestly, he kind of sounds like the artists he learned the song from.

I can definitely hear a Steve Perry thing there, and no one will ever be Steve Perry, but his influence can not be denied.
