Higher Place Still Makes Me Smile

Had the iPod running today at the 2nd job. It's on shuffle but for some reason I heard 11 Journey tunes in the space of 3 1/2 hours. They covered ALL eras of the band. I heard Never Too Late, Spaceman, To Play Some Music, I'm Cryin', Something To Hide, Rubicon, and several others. Since I haven't cared much about Journey lately I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it all. But Higher Place and Spaceman actually charged me up the most.

Higher Place sucks. It's like complementing a midget for being tall. Get real...that song blows.

Agreed. That one, along with "Remember Me" represent the Augeri-era Journey the best.

Yeah, and I would add TPIYH as the most Journey-sounding song of the Augie era. I remember everyone flipping out when Drew posted soundbytes of that one before it came out.

I'm with Saint John on this. It's a perfectly decent AOR work out with a lot of bluster and no soul. It's second best Journey. Simple as that.

Agree with NIG though about TPIYH....

"Remember Me" sounded like fresh, original music. "Higher Place" sounded like contrived, formatted garbage....with the exception of the ending. The opening line to HP makes you want to reach for an airplane vomit bag.

"Remember Me" wasn't a bad song but the production was so weedy even though it was aiming for a big and grandiose sound.

I actually think the Augeri era peaked creatively with Generations. Sure, it was a patchy album with some real dogs on there but the highlights were the best work that line-up did.

Higher Place is a great energy rocker.....

Faith in the Heartland is one of the better songs Journey has ever made...Perry or no Perry

Agreed, great tune. However, the ending to that tune is just too drawn out. It should've been about a minute shorter and, instead of a 9, I would give it a perfect 10. Same thing for "Livin' to Do", another great tune.

Saint John- this is ALMOST as bad as your saying that Led Zep is one of the most highly overrated bands in history. Higher Place is a complete kick ass song that has almost got me a few speeding tickets! The phrase "COMPLETE DUMB FUCK" comes to mind when thinking of some of your posts like the 2 mentioned.....

And it comes to mind whenever anyone puts Higher Place and Led Zep in the same sentence as if they had equal value in any way at all....

The Place In Your Heart is a force to be reckoned with.

Song is amazing, little bit better than HP.

Lol, different strokes... LOVE Higher Place, HATE Remember Me, TPIYH is ok, but I really love Livin' to Do. We Will Meet Again is pretty good, too (love the drums).

My favorite from this period is probably "The Time."
"I Can Breathe" is pretty nice. Esp the Chorus...

With Journey's perpetual soap opera, it's easy to forget that there were some pretty good songs during the Augeri-era....

It was "forgotten" during tapegate but recent events have allowed for some halting, baby steps, lukewarm praise of the Augeri era again.

Feel free to use this when referring to SJ's posts. Came in handy for me the other day.

Saint John, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Believe it or not, but Remember Me actually got me into Journey after I bought the Armageddon cd.
Journey was all new to me (and not that known in my country). Really kewl song and nice guitarplay!

Higher Place is a really kewl and tight song.

Faith In The Heartland... well... it sounds good but it doesn't do much to me except for the ending which I do like very much indeed! I wished they could write a song around that part.

The Place In Your Heart also certainly isn't a bad song, but I dislike the chorus part.

We Will Meet Again sounds original but meh not really my taste.

Livin' To Do is really a superb song. No doubt about that.

Yeah, Saint John does show some disturbingly idiotic preferences. I think its just to be contrary.

As said before, he has Van Goghs ear for music

As requested - here’s “The Time.”
I’m sure it’s not for everyone, but it’s my favorite of the Augeri era songs.
Killer, killer drums. Killer guitar ending. And I’m not a huge A fan, but great vocals on this one, imo…

I just do not get why people like Faith In The Heartland - to me it drags along - but i did like Remember Me - Arrival is a decent AOR Album but not a patch on any other Journey album and Generations is a dog

Higher Place is one of the best songs of the Augeri era, the song is a classic.

Some of my other favorites of the Augeri era are...

All The Things
World Gone Wild
Live And Breath
State Of Grace
The Time
Faith In The Heartland
The Place In Your Heart
Out Of Harms Way
Better Together

I'm in the minority here only. I've heard it played several times at shows and maybe a few hundred out of anywhere from 5-8 thousand even knew the words. I'm not in the minority, asswipe.

Just because the majority of people there didn't know the words, doesn't mean that they didn't like the song. If they booed the song, you'd have a point. Most fans at a Journey show aren't going to recognize the new songs, regardless of how good they are.

While I agree with SJ on a great many things, I can't here. I think it's the best effort of post Perry Journey. Not that there was anything THAT great, but I do like that song.
