IE as has Rod Stewart, Micheal Bolton and others.... would you still buy the music that was out there...
or does it have to be original Steve Perry music....would you be disappointed if you waited now 11 years for
Perry music to only find that this is what he offers...doing the greatest hits from the 50s or 60s???

Just for sheer morbid curiosity I'd buy an album of him making farm animal noises.
At least it'd be something...

"Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo-moo"

Ha. He could cover that 'moo-moo' song by the KLF.

Would love to hear him do covers of some of my R&B faves, Sam Cook, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson - besides the hit-and-run versions of "Cupid" and "Bring it on home" (w/JBJ)

We all know that Sam Cooke was one of his major influences (they even share the same birthday) - however, I would love to hear him do Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" - and Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" (which Marvin Gaye did a cover of also)

I don't know if I would like just a bunch of mushy love songs - I would prefer him to be more true to his roots ..... if he enjoys it, then probably we would enjoy it as well.

Great quesiton.

Ditto. I hate cover albums, but most of the current ones cover tunes from the same era. To hear Perry do music from the era of Sam, Jackie Wilson and from more of a soul influence would be a lot more interesting to me than Styx covering Jethro Tull tunes (blech!- though there are songs on their covers album that I wholeheartedly dig). Perry has nicked every lick Sam Cooke ever did and I tell you, if they ever did a dramatic movie about "The Sam Cooke Story"- they should hire Perry to do the vocals for it (unless they're just using Sam's released tracks). Seriously, for my money NOBODY has come as close to Sam's voice as Steve. As far as Marvin, I'd love to hear Steve do Pride and Joy.
Personally, the Rod covers is a pretty interesting idea and I think he does them well, but I prefer Rod doing rock tunes. The kind of Chuck Berryish stuff that he did was just cool. He's covered a lot of Sam's songs (Twistin' the Night Away, Having a Party, etc.) and he does them well, but not like Sam or Perry.

I'm sure I would be curious enough to pick up a copy
of Perry doing the Cook Classics but I just know
it wouldn't satisfy my hunger for his own songs.

Perry addressed this in an interview with Uncle Joe Benson recently. Joe asked him if his next solo effort would be along the lines of what we know his music to be like (melodic rock) or if he'd consider doing something like Rod Stewart's Great American Songbook thingy. I don't remember his exact response, but he certainly was shying away from the melodic rock idea saying "he didn't want to become a parody of himself" or something to that effect. He liked the idea of doing a cover album, but he was on the fence on how to go about it and what songs to cover. I think he wanted to do something more unique.

That's our boy Perry. Never satisfied with the status quo, but that's also what holds him back from doing anything. Too much thinking, too much considering, not enough action. Damned artists... lol. (PS: I know because I am one)

More like "that's our Perry- always leaving the fans expecting something".
;)

You know what be cool? It would be cool if Perry did songs that he's written IN THE STYLES of those old soul artists.
Do a whole album of new tunes, but make it sound like it was recorded back then. THAT would truly rock.
If I did that, I'd even throw a bit of vinyl noise into the tracks.

How come nobody does that?

give it up people
steve cant sing anymore
and lost all cred. when he said on the vh1 show i didnt feel part of the band.
boo hooo. the rest let him take control of the ror lp and it was the weakest wimpiest thing they did.
the only thing the rest of the band can do now is bring back gregg rolie, and steve smith, and let deen sing the perry stuff.

You mean kinda like a whole cd of songs that sound like
You Should Be Happy?
I could get into that.

yes, of course, I'd buy anything SP put out, especially covers...I'd especially love the 50s-60s songs, which are more my speed. What I wish 'tho is a CD of lullaby-type songs (not baby songs), but soothing, help me fall asleep songs...yeah, I'll keep on wishing 'cuz I don't think he will do anything more.

As I said in my post last week, I would be in favor of this.

Even if his voice is not fit for belting it out on tour, night after night, I'm sure he can still sing at his own pace, in the studio.

Yep, no question, without a doubt, I would buy it. He could even sing the phone book and I would buy it.

Would be a great idea, alot of wonderful songs he could so and make them his own.

Oh Christ!
Stop it with the fucking covers!

I mean, shit, I'd actually buy a covers album from Perry...if that's going to be the only Perry.....but for the love of Pete....fucking covers?!!?!?!?!?

Enough bad covers albums out there to float from here to Wombats place....and I'd never get my feet wet.

No more fucking covers!!!!

Perry will never do a covers album. It would just spark up endless comparisons to the originals. If he does anything, I suspect it will be original music so that he can sing in his own unique style...whatever that may be these days.

I totally agree...seems the most sensible approach for him to take (if he so wishes) 8)

Yeah, that was one song that kind of had that vibe in a big way, but I'd like him to do it even more so. More like it was recorded back then with those instruments (real keys, real strings, real organ, etc.).
