(Yes, I sent this to AJM in an email, so if it looks familiar)

Maybe this has been posted before.....but here's a couple of clips of Pineda singing journey songs, they're youtube...but they ARE great sources of ideas of how this kid could sound if he's put into Journey (eh?)

Don't Stop Believing -
Faithfully
Cheap Trick's "The Flame "
Survivor's "The Search Is Over"
Aerosmith - I Don't Want To Miss A Thing
Heart "Alone"

Just in case you're interested....

it's been brought to my attention that using the word "kid" to describe Arnel might have been inappropriate. Apparently I didn't realize how well Phillipino people age, and he's FORTY...

my bad...I take it back.

My problem with Arnel is not any "accent" or his slanted eyes or anything superficial.

My problem, as best evidenced here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88nfiZ-yy5Q) is his delivery. He hollers EVERYTHING. Songs have low points, high points, etc. Can he hit the notes? Sure, he does them okay. But from the start of the song he's bellowing at the top of his lungs.

It don't work that way.

Wo! that "the search is over clip" is really rough. Hurts my ears. I can hardly hear his voice properly!

His version of "Faithfully" isn't bad.

But I'm not sure about this guy.

I just finally listed to him singing Stryper's 'Honestly' Not sure if someone who has heard Michael sing this song hundreds of times, and numerous times live, is a good judge or is going to be way too critical.
While I didn't think he sucked and he's not a bad singer, I was expecting more after all the rave reviews that were posted about him singing this song.
I am still wondering again if it's because I am used to hearing Michael sing this, and dead on live many times..but to me Arnel was flat at times and lots of nasal. He didn't have the range or what this song needed. It didn't suck, but it did nothing for me.

I don't know this song. Never heard it before.
I know YouTube isn't exactly quality reproduction, so it's unfair to judge on that alone ....BUT.....I'm still not sure about this guy.
On this clip he sounds like someone appearing in a stage musical production - not that there's anything bad about that, but it's a different genre to a rock gig, and I do hear a 'voice' there, but it hasn't given me any goosebumps yet.
And to me, if a singer gives ya goosebumps when he hits certain notes then give him the job.

If he doesn't, then.....ba bye.

Has anyone who posts on here seen him live?
Or do we just have the YouTube clips to judge him by?

I have watched. Sorry no charisma, no excitment. He is certainly no SP or JSS Those 2 men commanded the stage and the songs. Besides in a yr or so he will have been booted.....it will just go on and on.

That's very interesting and good that you brought this point up because I was going to say something about it too. I agree, you cannot always judge someone via youtube, but a few things.. The version of Arnel singing Strypers Honestly, I thought, was a pretty good clip for being on youtube.
Now, what I have, and what I did before judging him singing the Honestly youtube clip. I almost every clip of either Michael solo or Michael with Stryper, singing Honestly, that is posted on youtube.
Before posting my comments/opinion of Arnel singing Honestly, I listened to Michael singing them on youtube. I wanted to listen and see if they sounded as they should on youtube, so I could be fair to see how Arnel singing this sounded on youtube.
Trust me, even though this is one of my least favorite Stryper songs, I have heard it so many times, and tons of times live, I am a good judge on this one.
While I agree, we cannot always fairlly judge someone who is on youtube because it's been compressed so many times, it usually is a boot, who knows what it was filmed with, etc.., but we still can get a pretty good idea.
Again, while it didn't suck and he can sing, it just wasn't on. It did nothing for me. I expect a lot when I hear someone attempting to sing this song. I don't think it was just that I have heard it sung hundreds of times and it was weird hearing someone else sing it.
It just didn't blow me away as I would expect if someone was going to attempt to cover a song like this...especially after reading the reviews of him singing this. I went in hoping for more.
Michael Sweet is one of the greatest voices out there singing. He just never got the respect due because of what group he is in and what he sings about.
I expect a lot from someone who going to try and cover him.
Just the same of someone trying to cover Steve Perry, Dennis DeYoung, Jimi Jamison, etc.
I still need to listen to the rest listed above. I am on dial up so it takes awhile.

When I first heard about Arnel I listened to just the audio with an open mind and purposely did not watch the video because I didn't want to be influenced by anything else.

I was not impressed, I have listened to all of the clips and I really don't get what all the fuss is about.
I would pass if I was Journey and if they really can't find a better frontman than this please do us all a favor and put it to bed once and for all.

I have just listened to the voice, with an open mind too, Escape Artist. :)
So I can't really comment on his stage prescence [or lack of.]
I always do that - I close my eyes and listen ......and wait for the goosebumps.
If I don't get a reading on the goosebump-o-meter, then I can take 'em or leave 'em. That's how I feel about this guy for now.

I know exactly what you mean piecesofeight.
Even though YouTube isn't always 'clear' - you can still get an idea of the voice, can't you? After a few seconds you can tell a good singer from a bad one. I was just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'd need to hear a CD and/or watch him live to really decide. :)

I suppose if he does get the gig and they do some recordings then maybe once they've pro-tooled or whatever they do with their gadgets and stuff, maybe we'll like what we hear?

There are not a lot of clips of Michael singing this song on youtube. If I wasn't on dial up and could upload without it taking hourse, I would post what I have.
Anyway, here is a clip I found for 2001. Again, as we speak of it being on 'youtube'...this is a boot, and the video is not that great, but the audio is good enough for you to get an idea of what this song can sound like live.
They gave it a little bit of a twist and a slower version, but you get an idea of what the audio should sound like.

We think so much alike. While I don't always like to judge right away, I am usally right. You usually do know right away if it's on or not. Then you decide to keep going and give it a listen. You wait for that part of the song that is 'it' The 'it' part of the song. You want to know how they will do on that part.

Now here's an example of how You Tube can be misleading. I've never listened to Stryper before so I have no opinion at all about this Sweet guy. He sounded really good on the More Than A Feeling clip recently...but here he sounds like an amateur. If Journey had hired him and this clip was what I was judging him on...well, I'd be very pissed off.

Yep - go with your first impression and it's usually right? I'm with you on that.

When I first heard Steve Perry on the radio he hit my goosebump-o-meter and I had no idea what he looked like. A few seconds of listening was all it took. That voice blew me away.
Then when I saw him, I liked his look, I liked his style and I liked his presence. The whole package. But if I hadn't liked the voice, I would probably never have looked any further into who this guy was or who the Band were.

After hearing the YouTube clips of Arnel, I'm not fussed whether I hear or see him again, really - but because of all this 'drama' over SA's voice probs and JSS's firing - I'm kind of interested to see how this plays out, and I am interested to hear him on a studio recording.....maybe.

I still hate how they treated JSS, so I'm kind of wanting to snub anything they do, but I adored the 'classic Journey' and even if they have behaved like shits, their talent is still there. So, I'm waiting to see what happens next.

Here is "Honestly" when it first came out in '87. This was actually a huge video on mtv.
I hope the audio is good. Like i said, takes me forever to listen to youtube. I tried to pick a Stryper fan who posted, hoping it should be good quality.

It's absolutely unacceptable that they don't release any statement.
Always been a big issue I've had with these Lad's.
Yes I use the term Lad's because they be acting like children for the

Well, the statements they DO issue are open to question.
Look at the nonsense they trotted out about JSS's 'leaving' the band.
They seem to prefer to let info 'leak' out like a dribble of pee pee.

Maybe their Management will text someone with the statement, who will text it to someone else, who will tell somebody backstage at a show, who will phone Brian May, who will post it up on his website, for someone to cut, paste and post it here for us.

OK, I am downloading DSB right now. That is the only way I can watch videos online. This too though takes a while, but I will at least be able to watch it all the way through, not two seconds at a time every 30 seconds.
Anyway, I am going to give this one a shot, but here is what I think I have figured out.
I am not sure this guy can be 'bombastic' Can he really get into it on a rocker or the part of a song that requires someone to just dig deep down and sing like a rock star with some good drama.
Steve Perry, JSS, Michael Sweet, Dennis DeYoung, Sammy Hagar, Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar..just a few of my favs, can do this. The person must give me chills and make my mouth drop to get my approval. This has not happened yet.
Question, could he pull off this? Give it a chance to kick in! LOL! :P

Just because there are a ton of video's of "the new Journey lead singer" doesn't mean anything to me. I haven't been a journey fan for years. Mainly because they haven't done anything to grab my attention. Until they do I will not pay them much attention.

He is very good. Actually, better with Heart & Survivor IMO. He should put out a cover album. I will NEVER go because of the others. They have violated many things I believe in and IT IS OVER. Gee,retire already. Spread the word . Journey is no longer Journey. Jeff did do them justice. Too bad they were jealous of his talent.

Relistened and the annunciation is pretty bad. He's talented, but so are many karoake singers. Anyone calling for him to be Journey's lead singer is on fucking crack though. I hope Frig and Fro do give him the gig because I want those two fuckers to fail in the worst way and retire as laughing stocks.

And maybe ARnel (I like that spelling better, LOL) can make a few bucks. They won't be out of my pocket, but whatever. This will not work, if it happens at all, and I will revel in it going down in flames.

JSS's dismissal was ridiculous.

Anti Frig and Fro Forever!
