Disappointing concerts?

The most disappointing show for me was seeing Foreigner in Ft. Wayne back in August '98. First off, the venue was a large bar by the name of Pierre's. The place is known for having lots of big acts playing there and it holds probably 300-400 people. Anyway, it was the middle of summer and the temp inside was probably in the mid 90s, so it was also very stuffy. Lou Gramm wasn't too far removed from having had surgery to remove a brain tumor and he was forced to take hits off an oxygen tank at several points in the show. He wasn't in superb voice, either, and just didn't look well overall. We sat stage right, directly behind the soundboard and there was a woman standing there with some of the Foreigner crew members who didn't look like she belonged. I'm guessing it was Lou's wife at the time. She watched him the entire show and looked kinda concerned about him.

Anyway, the show overall wasn't terrible, really, but I was expecting so much more, so it ended up being rather disappointing. I saw them again the following summer when they opened for Journey and they were a little better that time.

Man that's just sad. Why the hell was he up there? Didn't these dudes get rich off their 70's & 80's hits?

It's one thing to love to perform but you need an oxygen tank on stage?

Maybe I'm speaking too soon. :D This may be exactly what it'll take for Perry to get through a show.

Joking people! He'd never be on stage if this was the case!

What a last memory that would be of the farewell tour.

Alright, heres the worst for me-Rascal Flatts in 2005. First, I hate country music. Thats probably the big reason because Mrs.ScarabGator and Teenage Miss ScarabGator loved it. I was in Hell. Simple Hell. The things a dad does for his loved ones. The daughter better remember that when she wants to put me in a nursing home someday. I'm gonna remind her "hey, I went to Rascal Flatts for you..."

I thought it was a tremendous show of courage and "OH heck no--I'm not giving up!" plus the steroids were making him so very bloated. but it was an amazing show to participate in. they had a choir onstage for "I wanna know where love is". wow

It was one of the most memorable shows ever for me.

Agreed. It wasn't any better in August 2000 when I saw them at the Grove in Anaheim. His voice was mysteriously clear on the ballads, but raspy and not able to hit the notes on the rockers. I feel sorry for Lou as this wasn't his fault at all. The show was pretty disappointing. Back then I didn't think to check on this kind of stuff on the net and there was no You Tube to verify a singer can still cut it.

1976, Gary Wright opened for Peter Frampton. Wright should have stayed at home.

I saw Foreigner last year, I think, and that was the first show I'd ever gone to just to see the supporting musicians -- Kelly Hanson, Jeff Pilson, and Jason Bonham. They were awesome, and Kelly Hanson was incredible! One of my very favorite vocalists.

As for disappointing concerts, I can name 3 -- Van Halen during the 5150 tour -- way too loud, and once I realized I didn't recognize Panama until after the solo, I just bailed. I read a review recently of the current tour where a fan said the same thing -- so loud he didn't even recognize some of the songs. The other two were Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society -- saw them twice at the same club, and found Zakk so offensive and idiotic, I bailed a few songs into the show. He's just a cave-man these days.

Yes and I would love to see the new Foreigner, the demos are incredible and the lineup is an allstar band. This just has to totally rock!! A new album would be outstanding. The disappointing post tumor Lou days are gone.

The five times I've been forced to sit through a Kansas concert. The first four as openers for Styx and the last one-a station promotion I had to be at.

UGH.

Foreigner was awesome in Houston. I was blown away. Kelly Hansen is incredible--singing whatever!! They were awesome in Anaheim too but I was very busy making videos for myself!!! It was rushed and I was not nearly finished listening. maybe they will do some shows outright sometime.

I saw Foreigner with Gramm open for Journey on Augeri's first tour, and they were just awful.

But the worst show has to be Great White opening for Whitesnake. I really like both bands and was very disappointed that night.

Kelly Hanson ROCKS! I was always a Hurricane fan. He has a very distinguishable voice. I think my favorite Hurricane song is "Temptation" off of "Slave to the Thrill".

Kansas -- I can't do Deep-Fried Southern Rock.... big dudes with long hair, thick beards, cowboy hats and Terminator sunglasses... or anyone with the last name Van Zandt. It's just Country to me. However, I completely dig JSS's cover of "Carry On Wayward Son" off of Yngwie's "Inspiration" album -- he really turned me back on to that song!

Whitesnake/Great White -- I saw that tour! I remember really liking both of them, and was excited to see Great White. G.W. has since become one of my very favorite bands to see live, and the new album is great! :P

I saw Hurricane in 1986 with Leatherwolf, in 1987 with Stryper, and in also 1986 they played at my college and we got to meet the guys and get their autograph. Kelly signed it to "Wendy - great burgers" :?

What struck me at the Foreigner show was that Kelly hasn't changed at all!!! He was (to me) exactly the same as the times I had seen him in the 80's. He did a great job in Foreigner - I was impressed.

My most disappointing concert has to be BON JOVI during their "Slippery When Wet Tour". I saw them @ Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY with Cinderella opening. They played only 10 songs + 1 encore song. It would be 20 years before i saw them again during the "Bounce Tour", and what a difference..... and that concert was excellant.

Guns n Roses in 88. Axel was so trashed he didn't even try. Sounded like crap.
Billy Squire in 84. Just horrid live!
The Cars. They sounded great but no crowd interaction at all. They got on stage, played and got off.

Van Halen 1983 - 84?

Albuquerque, NM

Drunk...all the guys were wasted! DLR was forgetting all the lyrics, EVH was stumbling all over playing like Shite... not worth a dollar!

US Festival 1983 I had a similar impression of DLR. What a bummer :? And it had been a VERY long day, we deserved a whole lot more in my opinion.

that tour, actually their whole career, was so hit or miss. i must have seen over a dozen crappy shows in the US, then was blown away by a really good show in belgium. maybe the enthusiasm of the crowd made the difference, i don't know.

Any Styx concerts without Dennis DeYoung singing his songs.

Cheap Trick at the Agora Ballroom in Dallas. Circa 1983. I love Cheap Trick, and I'm sure the concert would have been great, but it was just too damn loud. It was like white noise it was so loud. I didn't have any ear plugs and stood there with my fingers in my ears like hundreds of others. Couldn't enjoy what would have otherwise been a great show.

Kansas is "deep-fried southern rock"? There are maybe two songs in their whole catalogue that are even close to southern rock. Most people have never even heard those two songs.

You are right, and I wasn't really thinking. I've never really listened to much Kansas outside of "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry On", and those songs certainly aren't Southern rock. I was mainly thinking of Skynnard, I guess, and probably 38 Special. Maybe I remembered that promo photo I saw of Kansas last year where one of the dudes was wearing an eye-patch and got the wrong impression. Thanks for setting me straight!

Yes, you are correct -- thanks for pointing it out. Speaking of deep fried, they've been having stories on the news about our State Fair for the past year really honing in on how ridiculous the food is getting -- deep fried Twinkies and Snickers bars and stuff. I guess with all the attention, the Fair is trying to outdo itself, because I saw a story just yesterday talking about how they are now offering "Fried Coca-Cola"... didn't catch exactly how they make it, but it involves Coke syrup, and they were saying it's even worse tasting than it sounds.

No THANK ye... I'll be skipping it this year.

No apology necessary! It's perfectly permissible when the band ain't that important to ya. ;) Here's a recipe to make ya puke for sure:

1) Listen to Freebird 3 times in a row
2) Eat some deep-fried Twinkies and Coke
3) Ride a roller coaster

If that doesn't do it, look at your wallet to see how much cash you've wasted at the fair.

:)

You are fight.Try playing "The Breeze" for 12 minutes 8 times a month, dont even nned a fucking roller coaster. The band blows, them fuckers need a good scrubbing down.
