and may I add how great that voice would/could sound with Journey. I love "Ive got a lot to learn about love", it NEVER gets old.

Dude you need to get past Chalfant ever singing for Journey. They are content to just tickle his yambag every time they need a singer and then leave him with blue balls while they choose someone else.

WOW!!! I dont think Ive EVER heard Chalfant and Journey's relationship put that way!!!

Am I the only one that isn't that hot on Chalfant's voice? Don't get me wrong, he's a good singer but I just don't care for the tone of his voice that much.

Scarab, sometimes the truth can be a very bitter pill to swallow. That's just how I see what they've done to the guy repeatedly.

I heard that they worked him over pretty good back in the 90's but I thought maybe if Journey were apoligetic enough...also Chalfant himself said he loved to jam with the band.

Journey has 2 choices to get my $$$. They are Perry or Jeff.

Yes, awesome! I'm listening to The Storm today, too, and just ordered "Eye of the Storm" last night (as well as a "Two Fires" disc"). "I've Got a Lot to Learn About Love" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I've probably sung along with that song more than any other from my early 20's until today. I'd love to see him in Journey more than anyone else aside from Perry (or JSS, of course).

Chalfant must just be a huge Journey fan... The Storm was modeled after Journey, both his Two Fires albums seemed to use Journey-ish artwork, and he recorded a Journey tribute album.

I've seen that to, yet I've heard that The Journey Management/ Legal team has
not been ever so friendly in their rights of songs usage.

Why does Mr Chalfant have it but others aren't given that grace?

No, you're not alone, but you may not like the company.

I think Kevin is a very good singer, but I don't think his voice has the soulful resonance that it takes to compare to Perry's. He's a lot better than Augeri on the Perry/Journey material, but that's not too hard for a strong, clear tenor voice to do. Really sounding like Perry is what's hard, if not impossible, to do. I'm sure a lot of people who only hear the high notes will disagree with me on that, but they're the ones that are missing out if that's all they hear.

The key is to sound close to Perry but not be a Perry clone. Kevin is not a clone and could forge ahead with a new sound for Journey while still be true to the past-ERIC

On this clip he sounds similar in tone and range to Deen C. Good voice.

Chalfant rocks and would be a good choice for Journey.

I think from what I've seen, the only weakness he might have is to be seen as a "wannabe" by some. I think he's awesome, but I kinda get the impression by all the things I've mentioned above that he's tried to identify with them too much. The covers of both Two Fires albums looked very much like Journey covers to me -- the 2nd album really looked like a variation of the scarab. Of course, I have yet to hear any of his solo stuff -- that is coming.

That brings up a very good point, and that is, what does it take to sound like Steve Perry, or when taken to the extreme, be a Perry clone? Isn't it amazing that for such a unique and recognizable voice, there are so many that sound like him? Here are what I feel to be the 4 basic ingredients you need (and not necessarily in order):

1) The range

2) The tone

3) The phrasing (style, or way you pronounce your words)

4) The feeling (heart, or soulfullness)

I've sung Journey songs for years with excellent results, but I would say I only have 2.5 of those 4 qualities -- the range, the phrasing (a mimicked style, basically), and about half as much feeling.... haha! I've had people come up and tell me I sounded exactly like Steve Perry, or that they thought they were listening to the CD until they saw me singing -- very cool to hear, but I chalked it up to the volume of the music or their alcohol intake (or both... haha!), because I don't have his tone -- I've been compared more to Dennis DeYoung or Michael Sweet than anyone else, so I know I don't "sound" like Steve Perry, and never will.

I think someone can get by singing Journey songs if they have the range and the phrasing down -- if you have the range, the phrasing is not hard to imitate.

But for those who have more than just those two ingredients, you have a potential Journey lead singer candidate. We've seen this with Jeremey, Steve Augeri and JSS -- each has a very distinctive voice, but because they (mainly Jeremey, and Steve A.) basically have very similar tones to Perry, it's a very short step to imitating his phrasing and pulling off a very convincing job -- fantastic! Same with Hugo or Deen Castronovo especially, but I've never heard either of them not sing in the Perry style (if they have, I haven't been exposed to it). JSS is an exception -- he has a much different tone, but I'll be damned if I couldn't close my eyes and believe I was listening to Steve Perry when I saw them live. I chalked it up the volume of the concert until I saw several YouTube songs of him singing Journey songs, and realized he was also using Perry's phrasing to do as much justice to the work as possible. Always wondered if that was his choice, or if the band asked him to do it (I can't remember his older cover of "Send Her My Love" to be quite as Perry sounding). As distinctive as JSS is, I was really curious to hear how he would have sounded on a new Journey studio album -- I really, really doubted he would have tried to mimic Perry for the sake of the sound, and would have just taken them in a new direction. Really sorry this didn't happen.

I don't think anyone naturally sings just like Steve Perry -- I think they may be gifted with the basic tools, and then out of inspiration are influenced in that style -- they learn to sing that way. If there had never been a Perry, I doubt any of them ever would have developed in the same way. Anyway, my two cents... I'm sure many will disagree with me.

I'll have to record something new. Haven't been in a studio since I was in my 20's, but I do actually have some very rough handicam videos of me singing "Separate Ways", and also believe it or not, Celine Dion's "My Heart Goes On" -- I had a lot of fun with that and totally shocked the crowd. I'll have to dig them up, but again, the overall sound quality sucked due to the noise in the room.

When I first started singing, I was 17, I think. People immediately began telling me I sounded like Michael Sweet which was super cool to me at the time, because I was a huge Stryper fan. The DDY comparisons came later and I hear that a lot these days. I was never particularly happy with that as I wasn't a huge STIX fan, and never really cared for the tone of his voice. In the past few years, I've also seen people compare Michael Sweet to DeYoung, and it helped take the sting out of the comparison.

Not taking away anything from DDY -- he's obviously a great singer -- I've just always wished I had more of a voice like JSS. Learned a LOT from practicing along with JSS. Heck, I even still have a reply he sent to my e-mail to him about 8 or 9 years ago -- one of my little treasures! Here is the last portion of it:

Kevin sounds like a much better fit than JSS for classic Journey tunes. But I do agree JSS could have taken them somewhere new for the future, but they probably figured their future should be more of the past.

I'm primarily a drummer but also sing a bit and can sound like SP, it's actually a fairly easy process once you get the way he pronounces some phrases, "oohh I'll do all this and so much morra.." etc, etc. lol.. But the complete package is the hardest to do justice; the look, the emotion, the soulfullness, etc.

"Ive got a lot to learn about love" Is there any live videos or music videos for this song? I'd LOVE to see it!! Thanks!
