I love those small Japanese venues. The band, and Steve especially, is so relaxed. He is not trying to over sing the songs for volume.

It is almost like he is just sitting around singing for the fun of it. To hear his effortless singing of these songs compared to those who TRY to sing the songs further cements what a phenomenon he was in his heyday.

it's always with a hint of sadness to look at these old videos and realize the magic that was once there died in 1983, the last time the band really performed with the dream team of herbert, schon, perry, smith, valory. they could have been great legends with a long career like springsteen but they are only a shadow of what they once could have been.

Someone commented awhile back that SP caught the bug during this particular Japan trip, and he actually was quite under the weather the day of this performance. I watched the whole show on dvd and noticed there were moments when he sounded nasally and several times, he pinched his nose before starting a song, like he's trying to unplug it. Shows what a trouper SP was not canceling the show. And to still sound so good when sick--he's 1 in a million!

You are correct. Not about being a Loon, but about him being sick during this performance. He was, in fact, popping his ears. He hit a couple of sour notes, and after motioning to the sound guy to turn up his monitor and popping his ears he was fine.

Love that whole show. One of my favorites, especially setlist wise. Great mix of new and old (at the time) and probably one of the only ones I've seen that has Lay It Down.

Wow, I really liked Dixie Highway from this show...Perry was sick during this performance? Interesting..

Reminds me of Michael Jordan. He played good even when he was under the weather. Seems like he always kicked it up a notch when he was sick. He played one of his best games ever when he had the flu really bad. I remember Scottie Pippen helping him off the court towards the end of the game.

Thanks for posting this...I didn't even know there was video of this song! I need to cruise youtube more. The end where Steve segues into Wheel in the Sky just made my eyes tear up... can't even tell what he is saying, but it strikes a melancholy chord.
Last week I flipped on VH1 in the morning & they just happened to play DSB from the Japan concert (where the audience is so mellow) - it sounded so great...not as rushed or hyper as the Houston version. He can make one song sound like 20 different ones - that's talent.
