David Coverdale gets ripped because he supposedly sounds like Robert Plant. Robert Plant would be lucky to be half as good a singer as this...

Singers getting "ripped" because they sound like someone else
is pretty unfair most of the time. Face it, most, if not all, singers
actually find out they can sing while trying to sing their favorite songs
or emulating their heroes. Maybe Coverdale realized he could front a band
because he could sing Plant's material... great. Did he go out of his way to be
a Plant Clone? Absolutely not. You can't fault a guy for "sounding" like someone.
Coverdale has put enough of "himself" into his recordings; he hasn't made a living
just being a supposed Plant Clone.

The people you need to lay blame on are the record moguls and agents that go
out of their way to exploit these comparisons. Over the years we've seen many
bands/singers get signed just because they "sound" like something that's worked before,
no matter the true talent level involved.

Look at early Creed; I really dug Creed's first 2 albums because I think Tremonti is a very
under rated riffing machine that takes Drop-D playing to another level. But I also knew that,
if not for Stapp sounding like a poor-man's Vedder, Creed probably wouldn't have gotten
the label puch they did with their debut.

I agree on Tremonti. Very underrated guitarist. However, I like Stapp's voice far more than Vedder's. Vedder's voice just really grates on my nerves, for some reason. Can't stand it.

Vedder is one of my all-time faves.
But I don't really think of Vedder as a "singer".
To me, Vedder falls into that rare class of what I
like to call "Storytellers".

Think of guys like Neil Young, Dylan,
Johnny Cash, Springsteen, Morrison, early Perry Farrell...
None of these guys were great "singers" but they were able to
write intense, thought-provoking lyrics and truly express the 'emotion'
of those lyrics into the song.
Vedder is a master at that.

Sure, his singing isn't pitch perfect.
But tell me you can't listen to songs like Black, Tree,
State of Love and Trust, Footsteps, Porch, Release, and Corduroy

and actually "feel" what the song is about thru Vedder's vocals.
That is Vedder's true gift, IMO anyway  8)

There's only one Pearl Jam song I like and I can't even remember the name of it right now. It was a hit off the "Ten" album.

I remember reading an article in a guitar mag back in the 90s. They were interviewing Yngwie Malmsteen and played some random tunes, asking his opinion of the song and seeing if he could name the song, guitar player, etc. They played a Pearl Jam song and his quote was something like "The singer is terrible. He sounds like he's sitting on the toilet pushing out a big one."

I thought the same EXACT thing back in the 80's watching the "We Are the World" documentary
when they were showing Springsteen singing his lines over and over again!
The man LOOKED and sounded like he was trying to shit an Oldsmobile

Coverdale is closer to Paul Rodgers as a singer which was the first choice Richie Blackmore had in mind after Gillan left,so he took Coverdale instead.
The reason Coverdale gets the comparison is due to his looks and 'Still of the Night' which had a heavy Zep influence. Not to mention the fact he did a record with Jimmy Page and toured Japan.Would loved to have heard Coverdale tackle the Zep classics and see Page do Still of the Night and Here i Go Again but they never toured anywhere else?
Plant still has a good voice but he has had to adjust the key on a lot of Zep songs for the reunion. 8)

Me too. Coverdale sounding like Plant is total BS.

Just because Coverdale can sing some Zep classics in their original pitch doesn't mean he "sounds" like Plant or even wants to. Coverdale was/IS an awesome singer who I would NEVER say sounds like a Plant wannabe. jeesh... One person who had a Zep vibe early on was Billy Squier, "Lonely Is The Night", now THAT to me was a Plant wannabe, at least in his earlier efforts. ;)

David Coverdale is one of the best entertainers I have ever seen in concert. I saw him a few years ago at The Pageant in Saint Louis, and he fucking rocked!!! It was amazing. Tommy Aldrige was on the drums (bare hands solo), and Uriah Duffy was on the bass. The guitar players were Reb Beach and Doug Aldrich. Mustn't forget Timothy Drury on keyboards. They were fucking amazing. David is a class act. He is very disciplined, and very free and high-energy at the same time. His work ethic is a rarity among artists his age. If you get a chance to see Whitesnake in concert, don't miss it.

David Coverdale ROCKS! Love him on the Whitesnake Live DVD from a few years ago, and the man still has his pipes. By the way, if everyone hasn't heard the new Whitesnake song that came out a year or two ago (I think it was a bonus track for a compilation CD), it's pretty cool. He REALLY goes for a Plant style on that song, much more than normal W.S.

Pearl Jam -- I tried to like them, and found myself only digging a few songs. "Jeremy" of course is a classic. Also from "Ten", I really liked "Evenflow" and "Alive". On their next album, "Animal" was probably my favorite track.

It seemed after that, to me anyway, they became just a little too self-important and started writing schizophrenic crap that no one could get into. I believe I did buy "Vitalogy" and didn't find much to like about it at all, and honestly, I've never given them another chance. I haven't met anyone since that is really into their later stuff.

I think I did read that they've put out better albums since then, but I just have too much stuff I enjoy listening to to waste any more time with Pearl Jam.

I remember reading that Shannen Doherty used to have a crush on Eddie Vedder, and someone (manager, mutual friend, whoever) tried to hook her up on a date with him. From what I understand, he blew her off completely. That for sure is one thing I don't have in common Eddie Vedder. :P

I hate Pearl Jam, have always hated Pearl Jam, and will never change my mind. Eddie Vedder can't sing in key to save his soul. His voice grates on me like nails on a chalkboard. Matter of fact, I find that sound more pleasing!

There are a few SONGS that are good but his voice just ruins it for me. Not to mention the few times I saw him on TV years ago, he was stumbling and mumbling & incoherent all the time.

Kinda like much of their music! :P But don't you think that his nutso facial expressions and all that crazy head-shaking in the "Jeremy" video were the bomb, though? Haha...

Haven't seen the video in a long time, but it was kinda like he was having a seizure or was possessed or something, eyes rolled back up in his head. Maybe my mind has embellished the memory over time... haha!

Hey, when you can't sing you have to give the fans something to like! I'll have to check Youtube and see if the video is there.

Ok, TIP #1 -- when typing in youtube.com, don't forget the "y" :P

Just watched it too -- what a hoot! For a guy that people say can't sing, he sure helped launch an endless stream of imitators. He and that dude from Alice and Chains.

You know, the way Vedder is in that video, with the peripheral, upward leers at the camera, I wonder if this could be his long-lost relative?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIV2HQ1BZQA

Look at him exactly 1:15 in the video (and you can see the same glance in just about every other video from him). This is a guy who you know has spent a HELL of a lot of time staring at himself in the mirror figuring out how to work a camera. :P I'm 'bout to listen to some of that good stuff right now!

HA HA HA!!! I thought you meant me. You need a porn blocker! Try K9 Web Protection. It's free and works great. Keeps my kids from getting into trouble. Block's just about anything you throw at it. It doesn't just use lists. It has intelligent content recognition as well.

Not a bad idea! I've used K9 spam protection before, and didn't know about this. Thanks for posting, and I'm sure all the guys on the list here are looking for such a utility. ;)

Whoops! Now that I re-read that a bit closer, before St. J comes in and whips up on me, I meant that it might filter them out for profanity, not "intelligent content". The latter function would axe Fyre's posts, but not St. J's... :P
