As you listen to him describe the difference between "his sound" and the Journey sound you can tell he is independent from the band.

It seems he looks at his time in Journey as a job, not a friendship.

He refers to Craig as his friend but you don't see that kind of reference to Journey.

Yes indeedy....and perhaps that didn't sit well with Mr. Schon....as we now know him w/ that whole "Journey Cult" BS.

I've thought that, too....since he was the "Hired Gun", so to speak.....perhaps in HIS mind that's why he "never felt like part of the band"...?
Also, in the DC, Steve said something to the effect of the band's personal issues and how they all got into each others' "business"....to which he said on camera something like, "Personal affairs - it's none of my business".
