For those of you curious about Jason Kelty and Escape of old

Postby Liquid_Drummer » Wed Nov 14, 2007 7:23 am

The old bootlegs are on the way. I was told that the quality is bad considering mid 90's vhs recorders but it should give some of you folks that were curious the idea.... I will post em as I manage to sort through and find the best of the best...

Would love to see them. The clip of Lovin You Is Easy was incredible, but I always figured it was a studio clip and would have loved to heard something performed live. Jason and most of the guys from Escape came to see us in Cleveland early this year. One of the guys kept in touch via email since then, but the vibe I got from most of them wasn't that they were all that close once things shook down... :?

I seen him in the 95/96 time frame and he was dead nuts on sounding very much like a 78-80 Steve Perry. The guy was definitely good.

Well I dont know how i will post them. Probably on a private ftp just for you guys and then you can youtube them or whatever. I have to rip the vid from the dvd's and hope that the person encodes them correctly so they are no blotchy. I also have a guy that ran sound for my Pink FLoyd tribute that has some soundboards but he is having trouble locating them.... I was warned that the quality is bad but I will do what I can to clean up the audio at least.

This guy was "dead nuts" on for infinity era perry to the point that it was freaky. Thing was that it never appeared to take much effort for him to do it. It was a sight to behold for sure and he should have been the guy in 98 but again I guess as it has been said before. He was too close. Hugo ??? Hugo isnt 50% of what Jason could do. I think it kind of pigeon holed him though. I mean, try singing original music and it keeps sounding like Steve Perry singing. In a way a blessing can be a curse I suppose.. Since about 10 years has passed since he did it I wonder if his voice has changed. Wouldnt it be freaky if he sounded like Frontiers era perry now. I wish the guy would sing anything for real but it seems he is truly finished.

I can't wait to see them. I have been very curious about Jason Kelty ever since his name was mentioned as a good replacement. Thanks a mil, LD.

I was looking forward to this alot after hearing the other clip a while back. This one disappoints me. It's good singing but not as Perryish as before. Is it just me?

Thanks Texafana, that was excellent. Good stuff! I could support that version of Journey.

That clip comes up as 'Lovin' You is Easy' for me... :? Was it supposed to be something else as it's named Escape or is that because of Escape the band...? Whatever the case i've heard this one before and it sounds very, very nice indeed.

I think the one clip is a snippet of the other. They are the same...one merely being longer than the other. Give us some live shit, LD. 8)

I checked the mail last night but no dice.. Soon as I get them I will hurry to get something up. As I said before I will put them on an ftp and let you guys either youtube them or whatever as my time is limited.... May just be audio at 1st. Depends on the quality of the material. I may just post the whole dvd as one big file. Dunno yet....

That clip of "Lovin' You Is Easy" is the best Journey cover I've heard yet, bar none. That guy was/is a great imitation.

OK got em today. Quality is bad as expected but enough to hear the guy and its like I remember. He fucking sounds too much like Perry at times and his range !!! Geesh !!! Now the bad news... They are on VHS !! I was expecting them on DVD which makes working with them easy. There are tracking issues with the video because they are 10 year old tapes and when I adjust the tracking to clear the video it screws the audio... COuld be my vcr as I have not touched it in a couple of years so now what do I do ? I am thinking about taking them to a video service to have them dumped on to dvd or I may just run the audio from my vcr in to my pc and record them with cakewalk. If I do this I may be able to greatly improve the audio so I will keep you guys updated. I think hearing it is more important than seeing it and that keeps files sizes down but we will see. I have gigs this weekend but I am off all next week so I will try to get a few clips up. Stay tuned.

Def take it to a pro and have it dumped to DVD format. They'll probably have tools to get the best conversion possible. Also, if possible ask them to rip an audio version while they're at it. Some places can do this to. Then you can bring the audio into your DAW and master some compression, etc. Based on the demo I've heard, I'm looking forward to this. Thank you for taking the time to do this!! :)

Hell, you could charge a few bucks for the DVD!!

Here's your solution (assuming you have some kind of video editing software that is):

Don't know about a PC's but Macs have programs like iMovie or the more professional Final Cut Pro. Once you have the footage digitized, you can edit it, clean it up and convert it into any video or audio file from there. For our purposes, you just need to export it out of your video editing program as an MP3 or Quicktime or WMV file. Most programs have simple export options such as these.

Here's how you get it into your computer from a VHS tape:
Standard consumer grade digital camcorders can be used as VCR's to record off your TV set, or in this case from your VHS player using standard RCA cables (you know, the Red, White and Yellow cables that run from your VCR to your TV?).

From the VCR, connect the red, white and yellow 'out to TV' cables into your camcorder. You might need a hybrid cable to funnels all three colored cables into one input though (check your camcorder's connectivity for that).

Your camcorder, in playback mode, not camera mode, should be able to record a signal off a TV like a VCR (check the manual for how to do it). Play your VHS tape in your normal VCR and use your digital camcorder to record the VHS playback onto your mini-DV tape.

Once it's on a digital camcorder tape, you should be able to import the footage in your computer via firewire through any video editing software that recognizes a firewire device.

Let me know if it works. Dying to see Kelty do his thing.
