My Rant - Vocal Chameleons

I'm so fucking tired of hearing about people that are vocal chameleons that I want to throw up. I have no interest in listening to person like that. Why would anyone want to hear a person that be a vocal chameleon? I want to hear a person that can only sing one style of music, because they want to. I want to hear a person that sings one style of music because their heart and soul comes through their vocals only that way. They are able to emote their feelings and personality into their vocals because they sing from their heart, singing in a zone that can only come from their soul. A lot of people can sing a lot of shit, but only a few can sing from the heart and convey that to their listening audience. Vocal chameleons can't do this and show through clearly. Give me a Steve Perry or Bon Scott any day as those guys sang only one way, from the heart.
It's like Bon Jovi doing country. I mean really, is that what they enjoy or are they just after the buck? Fuck off Bon Jovi you trader bastards.

Some people's "soulful" singers are other's "soulless" singers. Some people could hear one singer and think he/she sucks (gasp!!!) and others think he/she is the greatest thing ever. Sure, there are a few singers that most could agree on but there is a lot of room for taste or likes/dislikes. It's not cut and dry.

Yeah, don't ya just hate it when Perry
tried to sing like Cooke...or when Soto did Prince. Or when Schon plays jazz & blues, or does instrumental covers.
Damn chameleons. Hate em.
Entertainers should NEVER have the right to play all the kinds of music they want. They should ALWAYS be anchored to whatever made them the most popular.

I think singers should sing whatever they enjoy singing. I know artists that switch genres confuse their fanbase, but admire anyone that places their art above the almighty dollar.
That said, I can't stand Bon Jovi anymore and haven't
really liked much they've done after "Slippery When Wet". They wrote pretty much the same song with the same theme 3 times in a row on their past few albums ("It's My Life", "Everyday", and "Have a Nice Day"). Ever notice how all 3 of those songs end exactly the same way, with Bon Jovi singing the song title once after the instruments stop?
Hey, I admire their ability to stick around and keep in the public eye, but they are chick rock as far as I'm concerned.

Not at all, just not one of my favs. I think that was a baited question bro ... JSS is great guy as I've stated many times already. He'd just not a good fit for Journey IMO. Same story as you've heard for years now ...

Sorry Aaron, but I totally disagree with this part. Concerning JSS, he does sing from the heart and soul, and conveys that feeling very clearly.
I am wondering something tho. Why just one way with singers? I think singers should change up every now and then so they are not so damn predictable. Perry did change his vocal stylings when Escape came out. That went in a totally different direction.

This has been going on since the '50's. So what ! Artists can do whatever they want and just take a stab at it. In BonJovi's case they hit # 1 and opened up a new market for the younger country fans or uped the sales of their album..

To Clasicrockldy's comment earlier, Perry has changed style a couple times from what I noticed. Probably the more jarring stylistic change starting showing up a little in Frontiers and really came into the fore on Street Talk and ROR. Then he did another stylistic change on FTLOSM/TBF where started veering back to his more classic sound (for lack of better way to describe it)

Well, speaking as a singer, I think you want to sing different styles and grow and learn.
I didn't have just one kind of musical influence growing up. My first introduction into music was hard pure country, from there it was light pop/rock and then a little harder rock, then some blues, some broadway, some classics, and classical.
I think Linda Ronstadt is the perfect example of a singer who can sing anything and sound good doing it. That's the basic thing for me, let them try different things, but if they don't sound good, they should learn from their mistakes.

I think that's what you've got to do, and what it's all about, being happy and loving what you're doing. I might not sing Journey like Steve Perry, but I'll never stop singing Journey, or anything I like. I like some country and I don't sing it with a twang, even though I'm southern/backwoods country. I think it's about staying true to what you love and not trying to sound like someone else, but being the best YOU you can be.
