This Forum Has Come Full Circle

When I first joined this forum it was after I got booted from the official Journey forum (BT) for being a diehard Steve Perry fan. My passion for the Perry-era of Journey didn't seem to go over well with the new generation of Journey fans who had only seen Steve Augeri sing the Steve Perry/Journey classics. When I made it known that I preferred the Steve Perry of Journey to the diehard Augeri fans, they gave me the left foot of fellowship.

When I first came here, this forum was all about Steve Augeri. I reluctantly swallowed my pride and adapted. After Augeri came and went, the core members of this forum devoted themselves to JSS, who took over for Augeri as Journey's new frontman. After JSS got his walking papers, this forum seemed to implode upon itself for a season. Andrew saw this happening, and had to put the brakes on so the forum didn't lose its identity as a positive force that supported the band Journey.

Now that Journey is attempting to hire its third Steve Perry replacement, I see this forum gradually returning to the passion that brought us all here to begin with: The Steve Perry version of Journey. It may seem like light years since we were able to enjoy Journey with Steve Perry at the helm, however, it is a common thread that binds us all together. It's not the Augeri, JSS, or Arnel version of Journey that brought us all together. It was the Steve Perry / Journey that made this forum the most popular forum on MelodicRock.com.

Until we see how the upcoming saga plays out, the divisions will still be there. It may increase at that point unless they put out some killer tunes and AP delivers.

My opinion is Journey was way better before Jon Cain. But, hey, that's just me.

How many people do you think are banking on that? Wow, there's a lot of pressure for this to work I'm sure. It's gotta be unreal.

Voyager- I joined this forum after getting the boot from BT for being a Perry fan too. And yes it's amazing to see that the opinions which were considered to be marginal and loonish a mere year ago are now the majority view. It's like the denial has finally been lifted from the long-suffering die hard fan base who can now enjoy a productive life connected to reality. It only took ten years but better late than never, I guess....

As I watch this, I put myself in Rolie's place and you know what? That was a DIFFERENT band than the one Rolie left.

Sure, the main players were there (and they were awesome) but its not the Journey from the Captured album.

Sounds crazy but its almost as different a band as when SA stepped aboard and cut Arrival.

Give me a break. First of all, everyone knows Perry ain't coming back and second of all, there aren't too many here that like the direction Journey has decided to go with - a Perry sound-alike. Did you forget JSS and all the hope everyone had for a major Journey comeback? Do you see the hope of a Journey comeback now? No? Why? Because it's just going to be the same 'ol, same 'ol again.

Give you a break? You spent years puffing up a sound-a-like/look-a-like in Augeri. And as for JSS...what new dawn? When I saw them earlier this year they didn't play a SINGLE SONG from after 1983...and that was to a die-hard British audience who would have been all too happy to hear some new ideas. But there were no ideas. Just a Perry era set-list delivered in much the same way as it was twenty-five years ago but not as good.

Sure - it'll be the same old thing next year. But some of us have been criticizing the band for years about this. Whereas you - Crazie Scarab - have belatedly hopped on the bandwagon.

Although there's lots that wanna say "toldja so", I don't think anyone of us wouldn't be happy if Journey came back and WOWED us.

After the letdown that is "Generations", I don't see it happening and I'm an optimist.

AP has a voice, that's obvious. Will it be utilized to further Journey artistically? Hard to say.

Their recent past argues against it. Hopefully they've learned from their mistakes.

Matty, Matty, Matty... It was different then. Journey had been gone for how long when they finally re-surfaced with TBF? Then, there was the whole thing with Perry supposedly spraining his dick or something and Journey finally started tourning in 1998... after, what, 11 years? Sure, I puffed up Augeri! The dude rocked out. I bought Arrival, R13, Tall Stories and Tyketto. All great music. I even have my bottle of beer on Generations as I type here.

But! I'll tell you this.. after hearing re-runs of EVERTYTHING for the last 8 to 9 years, I'm getting tired. I'm getting tired of hearing everything Perry re-done! You got a problem with that? Do you still watch "I Love Lucy" on TV?

JSS didn't play a single song after 1983? That's a good thing.

Stay the fuck away from me, Matty.

It's hard to let Elvis go. But at some point we have to realize that he has left the building, and he ain't coming back. We can either suffice with Elvis impersonators to relive the glory days, or just take Bruce Springsteen's advice:

We just sit around talking about the old times,
She says when she feels like crying,
She starts laughing thinking about...

Glory days, well they'll pass you by
Glory days, in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Now I think I'm going down to the well tonight
and I'm going to drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
but I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
a little of the glory of, well time slips away
and leaves you with nothing mister but
boring stories of glory days when Steve fucking Perry sang for Journey.

Yeah, you should be so proud that the only people who give a shit any more are PerryHeads.

If that is somehow a victory, so be it.

Surprised they didn't all have that issue back in the late 70's. Those tight pants with stuffing had to have at least caused some pinching. Ouch!

Oh Monker...just put up the white flag and admit you were wrong all these years. The idea that a consensus has developed only because the people who share your take on Journey have lost interest in the band...well, that really is scraping the barrel, don't you think? There's pretty much the same bunch of people here as ever...

If anything, the Perryheads are the most relaxed they've been in years whereas the Augeri faction is still spitting with resentment. Like you, I imagine....

There's a problem with what your well-thought out post.

While I agree there's a resurgence of Perry-love around here...(and I'm equally to blame)...I fear that the current incarnation of this band is the most blatant attempt to fool the stupid-portion of the Journey fan base. Some have said that Augeri and Soto were both attempts to fool people into thinking they were seeing/hearing Perry...I didn't agree with that assessment. I felt that each singer brought a slightly different thing to the table...and it's what made Journey something other than a cheap-ass coverband charging $50 a head to see them.

Now they're deliberately trying to do it...that's the problem...

This whole forum (and others) are desperate for Perry to return and bring this band to a proper close....instead of watching Neal, Cain and their hired shitbags run this legacy any further into the ground.

It's a truly sad that they refuse to hear the pleas of the fans that do the most for them!

Agreed. That band has been run into the ground in the worst way. It's like a car that was awesome when it was new, but it's been driven to death by people who don't really know how to drive that well. And the only part that will fix it is impossible to get, waaaayyyy too expensive, and unfortunately there's only one.
