Generations sounds like a poor quality bootleg

So I'm uploading the 4 or 5 songs onto my iPod that I actually like. Sonically this is the pits. I have audience recorded bootlegs that sound clearer than this mess.

Just had to get that off my chest. Whoever listened to that final mix and said "yeah that sounds good" should have been shot.

I thought "Arrival" sounded way too bassy when "Higher Place" kicked in. I originally had it from the bootleg that circulated the Net before its release, and just thought it was bad quality -- then I get the CD and it sounded the same. Sounded like a cassette tape that you've left in a hot car for a week.

Generations is miles above in production quality than Van Halen III.. :o

Yeah...it's not THAT bad...

So I can get a comparison (based on the mp3s I have), dare to compare Generations production to Styx's Cyclorama?

I think Cyclorama is Waaaaay better than Generations, production wise and overall.

You have got to be kidding me. Cyclorama sounds absolutely incredible compared to Generations. Generations sounds like it was recorded through a tin can hooked up to a recorder with a piece of string. It's HORRIBLE.

And, yes, Arrival is bassy...I mentioned that on BT when it was first released. AllienC replied and made it seem like that it is that way intentionaly.

Another album I love, but is marred by too much bass, is Rush's "Vapor Trails".

Arrival sounds clear and crisp to me. Generations, no matter what I do with my stereo sounds distorted.

Agree with you about Vapor Trails though.

I don't think it was the bass as much as the production being REALLY rocky. Still one of my favorite Rush albums though. :-)

It was a crap job on the sound and seems semi-intentional.

In just about every song the guitar is as (or more) prominent than the vocals. Competing instead of complimenting. They were either masking SA or Neal wanted his playing to highlight.

Regardless, its sounds muddied compared to anything before. How did professionals let it get released? IMO, "the decision makers" didn't care what fans would think and knew it wasn't going to radio anyway.

Generations was a challenging record for the band to make. The end result was not what everyone hoped for - fans included.

I don't understand how artists that are used to great production (and therefore should know what it is) settle for poor production on later discs. Like 'em or not, all of Dokken's last several discs have top notch production. Same with Kingdom Come (Lenny Wolf learned how to produce, and has produced all his discs for several years now). So it can't be that expensive to get great production... Then you have jackholes like Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P., whose last several CD's have utter crap production. I believe he records them in his own digital studio, and he must be half deaf, because they are barely listenable.

I'd expect more from a band of Journey's caliber. For the person that thought Arrival sounded clear and crisp, try listening to "Higher Place" again -- especially at the beginning. It sounds like they are playing in the next room behind a wall to me.

In all the interviews I read before the release it sounds to me like Generations was sort of a rush job by the band. I wonder if they had taken the time to a) get solid songs throughout the whole album, b) mix it properly and c) find time to work on it all together, if it would have been up there with Arrival in terms of being a quality album. I'd still put Arrival up there with any Perry releases (or maybe in a tier just below).

Generations is sonically better than Arrival.

Even though the band had gone evil when it recorded the former but not the latter.

End result, Generations is the poorest quality "professional" CD I've ever heard. I don't know what the fuck happened, but it indeed sucks.

I don't think so. If that's good sonics, my ears must be totally worn out.

After you're done bleating go back and look at the reviews. Revisionist history aside, I am far from the only one who thought it sounded good.

Apparently, reviews mean nothing. Ask Neal about all the reviews regarding JSS with Journey that were ditched.

I read good and bad reviews on Journey w/ JSS.

I loved him and still wish he was in the band but let's not pretend that incarnation garnered the first positive word of mouth since 1986 for Journey concerts.

I never thought "Generations" sounded bad at all -- maybe not the best, but not bad by any means.

VHIII is an awful record all the way around. I can tolerate only one track on that record. Just abysmal.

Arrival is a much better album but Generations sounds a little better, at least to me anyway. Arrival was just a 'muddy' sounding recording. I don't know how else to describe it. The best recording of post-Perry Journey is the 2001 dvd - burn the audio onto a cd and it sounds great.

Arrival has some good songs. I wished it was Perry's vocals as that would have made it more interesting for me. I really liked Augeri's treatment of Kiss Me Softly tho. That suited his voice well & was a really good interesting & different song. I wish they'd done more songs like that w/Augeri.

Generations did nothing for me. I tried & tried but nothing grabbed me except A Better Life. Grading on a curve against other Journey songs, it's not that special, but it was a gem compared to the rest of the album. I was so disappointed. (Sorry Red, I know u love the album.)

Oh for sure. Arrival is far superior, much better album - the songs are killer, and you don't have to be a Journey fan to enjoy this one in my opinion. I don't rank it up with their best work, but it's a well made album non the less.
