This film opens today and it's one I've been waiting for for a long, long, long time! The reviews seem to be pretty mixed, though generally giving it a thumbs up. I hear Frank Darabont's worked up a stunning ending, which is awesome. I always felt like King ended the story so open ended that it begged for a Part II. Going to see it tonight, so I hope it lives up to expectations. I'll pop in and give a review once I see it (no spoilers, I promise)...

I want to see that movie as well. I'm hoping I can drag the hubby out to see it.
Although I think our 12 y/o will be behind us, let me know how appropriate it is for kids.

I'll be waiting for your review while I'm off seeing "Enchanted".

Thus far, Darabont has handled King material really well. This should be pretty awesome.

Hey J, what book was "The Mist" in? I'm guessing it was a short story but I can't remember in what book. Do you know? My wife and I are planning on seeing it this weekend also.

I want to see this one also. Cant wait for your review.

The original version was in a horror collection called Dark Forces.

Ah thanks, It's been so long since I read it. I've forgotten everything but the premise.

Yes, it started out Skeleton Crew, the short story collection. I remember reading it on my family summer vacation when it came out...We went to the NC mountains and I just sat in a rocking chair on the front porch of our cabin all week devouring the book. It's always been my favorite King story, besides maybe Salem's Lot and Gerald's Game.

I loved that one, but man, Gerald's Game freaked me out.
("Hey hon, lemme handcuff you..." ... "...um, no, thanks. Stephen King ruined that for me..." )

I loved Salem's Lot. Might be time to pull that out and give it a re-read.
I've read Insomnia several times. Love that one.

I've read Insomnia several times. Love that one.

Insomnia was very good too, but the one I'm excited about right now is The Talisman miniseries Spielberg is filming for TNT network next year! For me, King jumped the shark once he got sober. He has a few hits still, with Insomnia, Gerald's Game, Bag of Bones...For the most part I just can't finish his more recent work though (only got to about page 30 in Lisey's Story).

I always thought his scariest book was "Pet Semetary". The book was so great cuz he explained what the dad's thoughts were and how he rationalized what he was doing. Watching the movie it's like, "why the hell would you do that the kids gonna come back all demonic." The book was brilliant in explaining all that. Second scariest was "Salem's Lot". The one I found I couldn't put down was "Thinner".

Yeah I'm with you on the jumping the shark. I bought The Cell and some loose-lipped asshat told me it sucked so I haven't been able to start it. I hate when people do that. I haven't tried Lisey's Story yet though. Sounds like I'm not missing much. Damn, Jeremey, you're making me want to dig out my whole King collection and start re-reading. Bag of Bones - another one I absolutely loved.

The last time I read that, I was laying on the sofa and I got this weird feeling. I put the book down and turned around and my damn cat was sitting there staring at me. Just... staring. Didn't pick that book up again until the next day. IT was the one that scared the hell out of me.

It's a phrase that is used referring to the point when something that was good has gone bad. The origin is taken from the episode of "Happy Days" when the Fonz "jumped a shark" on waterski's and "Happy Days" started sucking. Hope this helps.

Means something changes for the worse, or at least not for the better. Originally referred to TV shows (the saying started with Happy Days, as I understand it) which reached their peak and then went more or less downhill. But now it goes pretty much for anything.

There's a website devoted to listing shows and at what point they stopped being good, or "jumped the shark".

If you don't hurry up and tell us about this movie, I'm coming up to Virginia to put a good old fashion ASS-WHOOPING on you! You guys have me all excited to see this thing now! I thought it was a remake of "The Fog", but now realize I was wrong. Damn I like a good scary moovie!

This was one of the most chilling and disturbing films I've ever seen. A masterpiece, and one of the top 3 horror films ever made. It was simply amazing.

I LOVE Stephen King books, but his endings ALWAYS piss me off. "IT" with a friggin' Turtle?? What the hell?

By the way, speaking of Stephen King, his kid is writing now. I just read a book of his called "Heart Shaped Box". This retired heavy metal star collects macabre stuff and he buys a ghost off of an Ebay-like site. Pretty creepy and pretty hip book.

VERY good book. His kid's name is Joe Hill. As good as a SK book.

I'm not expecting The Mist to be that great. Seems like King's stories have a hard time jumping to the big screen, Dead Zone being a notable exception...

Yup. Lisey's Story is REALLY dull.

the Turtle is in the book. They made it a spider for the movie. Maybe the movie makers didn't like the original ending either!
