"Girl Can't Help It" question

I've noticed that there is a slight difference in this song on between the ROR disc and the Greatest Hits disc -- near the end, there is a little extra Perry vocal on the Greatest Hits version. Has anyone else noticed or discussed this before? ( I need to listen to them both again to ensure I've got this straight).

Not sure myself Rip. I love this song. Thanks for giving me another reason to go listen to it a few hundred times more.

You're right. The Greatest Hits version is missing "There's a fiiiiirrrreee...." after the second chorus. It just goes into "oooooh, there's a fire in his eyes...." It always sounds weird to me no matter how many times I hear it. I'm too used to the album version.

I just recently bought the greatest hits cd as I am normally against collections, and would rather have the original albums as intended. Because of the fact I just recently purchased it, I hadn't yet picked up on this difference, but after listening to it again you are right. That is really weird, I am so used to that other vocal line being in there. It sounds sort of empty without it.

Hey, there -- you beat me to correcting myself, because I just listened to both on the way to work, and I got it backwards -- the Greatest Hits version lacks some vocals, and seems a bit shorter overall. Yes, the "There's a fiiiiirrrreee...." part, and I need to listen again, but I believe the portion where he goes, "Yeah! .... Fiiiiiiire, Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire" lacks a preceding extra 4 measures (if I'm counting right). I'll listen to them both again shortly and count. I first noticed this a couple of years ago when I was learning to sing the song and noted the difference. Thanks for the info! Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about the extra measures being cut.

Wow, really? I didn't notice that. I might check that out later, in the unlikely event that I remember to do so. I knew about the missing vocal only because I had read it somewhere quite a long time ago, and at the time, it made me pull out GH and listen. The GH version sounds so unbalanced at the end with the missing vocal, but now that you mention this other thing, maybe that's another reason it seems unbalanced to me and I just didn't notice. Either way, I don't like it. Album version is so much better.

I never bothed imported GH into iTunes (since I have all the originals) so I literally never hear it.
If there are other diffferences I'd never even know about them.

I like the song much better on the album too. I think those extra vocals add a lot to the song.

Agreed! The LIVE versions of GCHI and IBAWY are now bonus on the new ROR release. Love Perry's vocals on those and the ROR cd in general!

Perry's pipes and Neal's guitar.................ahhhhhh! :D

I guess I never noticed this on the GH version. Love the song, though, especially those harmony vocals at the end.

I believe it was edited for radio play. IBAWY is the same way. Shortened and edited. Where as live, the songs are longer and have more ad libs.

Absolutely the best. Actually, I've put together my own ROR album with almost all songs live. It rocks.....

Actually, IBAWY was not shortened for radio play - Perry insisted on leaving Neal's guitar on the end because he felt that it was so good that the stations would let it play out.

At 4:49 it is long compared to other Journey tunes at the time.

Turns out I was wrong about the GH version being 4 measures short. They both seem to be the same length. Only that 1 vocal line seems to be missing.

Could have been .... maybe I just like the guitar work on IBAWY better and am heavily medicated.

Deb is correct. They wanted to cut the solo on WCN and Perry told them to fuck off.
