Don't get me wrong, I've seen just about every clip out there, but on this one he seems like he really feels the song! He has a LOT of emotion in it, and he seems like he's singing to himself...almost like the crowd isn't even there. I think this is probably the coolest version of this song I've heard. It's not perfect, but I really like how steve changed the phrasing and timing of a few of the words. Thanks for sharing!!!
Well thanx to
Gunbot...otherwise, it wouldn't be on the 'Tube
**round of applause**
I just realized something:
Yes; I called it the
"Dark Side", because it was a delivery that incorporated everything you said above.
BUT -
It goes beyond that:
The male/female singing voice does not fully mature until you are in your early 30s...think about it: Steve recorded the original when he was 31; by the time this tour came around, he was 33/34. In this version, there are A LOT MORE mid/low tones than the original....
Yet, it's in the
same key.
Pair that up with the amount of vocal chord stress / touring beforehand, and voila....change of voice (IMO).
I'm so happy this version is available to the general public....because you're right...SO much emotion...
...it seems to me that this song became "personal" to him once he realized how Journey was "taking off"...and taking him AWAY from family / personal relations.
Just my .02
