Are you sorry for pirating music?

If you're feeling guilty about downloading an artist's album for free, there's now a place to sort of 'fess up. It's a web site called, DearRockers.org, where all kinds of music fans have written letters of apology to acts whose music they may have downloaded illegally. The cost is five dollars, and it goes to the act's management or official fan club. Addresses are provided by the site.

After sending in the money and apology letter, DearRockers.org will post a copy of the handwritten note and reminds users to "Enjoy your new-found musical karma, and keep on rockin'." Fans have written letters to several artists, including Whitney Houston, Axl Rose and Incubus.

Can't say I'm sorry about it. The only songs I d/led were songs from albums I had already bought and either the LPs/CDs were scratched to hell or the Tapes just didn't work anymore OR...they were bootlegs. So the music industry can kiss my ass if they think they're getting an apology from me for getting music back that I already paid for.

ANYWAY...I think Angie's HOT. ;-)

I'll apologize when I get an apology (and a refund) from artists who sold me a CD with only one or two good songs on it.

Totally. 8)
I paid 3.99 for Generations, and as I see it, Weed High Nightmare Music owes me double that - 7.98 - in return!

(plus tax!)

quit selling crap to us. I think it is they for pushing CRAP music to us that should apologize.
I mean britney, Timberlake, black eyed peas, 50cent, anything by Madonna...

I feel bad for the artists who are getting screwed. But I think the record labels need to charge less for the CD and pay a larger percentage to the artist. I will support the artist in other ways. But IMO it is the record labels fault that music is free...

I think apologizing or admitting to much of anything like that on the Internet is dangerous (even if it's supposedly anonymous). I'm sure the people who harbor (and sell) our information love it, though.

Here's my suggestion -- if someone feels that badly about it, write it out in a letter, read it to yourself, and then burn it.

I agree with most of the sentiments in this thread....but I'll add another one.

I'll apologize when the fucking music industry apologizes for blaming its failures on me....and starts looking in the mirror.

Another thing....to anyone that would consider contributing to such a website. Do so at your own peril. You might be legally entitling yourself to an actionable lawsuit in the future at the hands of the RIAA or whatever record company wants to blame you for their failings.

This is NOT a website I would even consider surfing to....bad stuff people, bad stuff.

Yes, I resigned once I read that stupid smarmy "Karma" remark that I wouldn't be there.

Honestly, if I were pirating music, I certainly wouldn't register my regrets on a public web site. That's just inviting someone to sue your ass.

Any fan who writes an apology to Axhole Rose needs therapy, as I know of no other artist who has abused, lied to, and jerked around their fans more than him. (no, not even You-Know-Who) If "Chinese Democracy" ever sees the light of day, no way in hell I'm paying for it. I'll listen to someone else's copy. :P

Am I sorry for pirating music?

No.

The artists I listen to don't need my help.

I spend so much money on CD's and concert tickets that if I happen to get something free, I do not shed a tear.

Actually, I have gone and paid to see artists in concert and bought a tour shirt after getting their music online. I spend plenty of hard earned cash on the bands I like. Most of what I get online is unreleased live material anyway. 99.9% of the time I go buy the CD.

I don't consider it pirating when I do so to "Check It Out". If I like it, I buy it, If I don't it gets deleted... It's Not pirating it at all in my opinion. I wouldn't buy a car without test driving it either. Would that make me a test pirate?

The music industry failed itself and the fans. Simple truth.... Overpriced beer-coasters hardly sit well with fans who spend their hard earned $$$ on them.

lol, you beat me to it

besides, pirating has led to being able to buy only the songs you want, instead of risking the above.. (not to mention - easier storage, & the easier sharing of boots)

so, no

if i did it..., i'd consider it a contribution to progress

[though I do miss the ‘album’ experience (cover, liner notes etc) - but that’s been gone for years, really (just not the same with cds).]

True, but it is their property, and you are stealing their property regardless of how rich they are .

Plus I can think of a lot of good melodic rock artists who pass up a chance at stardom because they refuse to sell out. They often are not as well off financially as many of us think.

If you like the artist and appreciate pay for his stuff, if they're a joke dont download it .

Feel Guilty???

Oh wait, maybe THIS is the post of the thread!
That album was H O R R I B L E.

What were they thinking?????????

On this topic, Metalica should be ASHAMED of themselves for going after Napster, etc.
Trading tapes MADE that band. If kids didn't trade their tapes way back when,
there'd be no band. Lars would be working at 7-11. What an annoying f'wad that guy is.
(they suck anyway. Can't stand em).

I have never downloaded but do agree with the point about refunds when there were only one or two good songs. I don't feel sorry for the millionaire artists who charge $70 and upwards for concert tickets, $15 and upwards for CD's and outrageous amounts of money for a cotton t-shirt and pieces of paper called concert tourbooks. Maybe if they cut all the prices in half people wouldn't feell the need to download, they could afford the original product.

As for any of the idiots writing apology letters they may want to consider what happened to some students recently at UNH. Downloads were traced to their computers and they were sent bills for approximately $2,000. One student decided to take it to court and lost. News reported this person now had fines of $200,000. I couldn't confirm this number and was hoping for the students sake the news added a zero or misplaced the comma.

Good idea. Forgive yourself and to hell with the rest.
