He could've sent out a memo...let us know maybe. Farewell tour, perhaps?

Personally I don't think we'll ever see that. I think 1994 was that tour. One can live in hope...

Farewell concert would be cool. 1 show in California. The Rose Bowl would work for me.

Sorry, no such thing...one of my sayings. To Carp is to moan and bitch/complain...and some of our big fat Aussie seals make a heal of a racket...so just a combination of two noisy annoying things. Sad eh?

Why does NS keep saying that there were two singers before Perry? There were also singers after Perry. NS doesn't compare the new guy to them. It is all because Journey was huge only with Steve Perry. The world doesn't want anything else. The band really cannot handle anything else. They need to hang it up. No bands in history have hit the same sales/chart status with multiple new singers. If these changes would have occurred when the world gave a crap, hell would have been raised then. The only way that Journey has a hope is to let someone else write, cause the boys are out of juice, and to rename the band, so that there are no unrealistic expectations placed on the singers, so that the band is not a parody of itself, and so they can find new life with a different audience.

I love the way that girl defended JSS, as I was thinking the exact same thing when they said he "boned out".

Oh yeah. There's a lot of words one could use to describe Steve Perry.

"Brilliant". "Talented". "Vocal-God". All come to mind.

"OBSOLETE" is not one of those words. "Obsolete" happens to computers. It's what happened to Windows 98. Nobody wants it. Nobody uses it. Nobody cares.

Applying that term to Steve Perry is to just make a fool of yourself. You can't BE "Obsolete" when 3/4 of the wannabe bands in the world want to have singers just like you. You can't BE "Obsolete" when the band you were in has tried unsuccessfully not once, but TWICE, to replace you, and looks now to be heading for disaster with a third attempt. You can't BE "Obsolete" when Columbia records re-releases the only three solo albums you ever did, one of which is a compilation, and they get a better response than half the JOURNEY albums also released as 'reissues'....and I didn't see the Chicago White Sox calling upon Steve Augeri or Arnel Pineda when it came time for someone to go on the news and acapella "Don't Stop Believing"....

There's a lot of things I'd call Steve Perry..a lot of words to describe him......OBSOLETE...is not one of them.

Sorry Stone Cold

You did not read far enough......

The author does not think that Perry is obsolete. In his response:

Personally, I’ve always felt Journey isn’t Journey without Steve Perry.
And his version of “Only the Young” is still one of my favorite songs.

Thanks for reading,
Steven

We seem to hear this a lot.

I'd use the word "Timeless" rather than obsolete.

He probably could have used a different word to describe SP, but he probably also didn't think he would such a passionate response from someone who must live and breathe SP.

Hi Cat, yeah I saw that.

After plastering "Obsolete?" in large pink letters over his face he wrote that to appease the poster.

My impression was he's saying that 6 singers down the line, anyone's replaceable.

'Course not true, the music lives on.

Very nice way to put it. Yes, peacefully retired indeed. :D Or at least trying to be peacefully retired without being thrown beak first into the Journey rumor mill every time they fire a singer.

Cleaning out the car last night and found a folder of old CDs - One of which was FTLOSM. Been listening to it making sales calls all morning - Nothing obsolete about it! Some criticize the songwriting and/or sound on it, but it's really just amazing listening to that voice. Timeless.

The song FTLOSM sends me soaring; probably my favorite SP vocal after "Stay Awhile" - I loved that whole CD!

Very well said. You should email that to the writer of the article. Instead of obsolete, he should have said "moving on... again?"

Jeremy, what do you think of Arnel? He sure does sound good.. I wonder how much originality he can bring to the table..I'm sure Neal and Jon will do most of the writing and/or Jack Blades..

Hmmm, There are definately moments on FTLOSMthat shine...mostly Perry's performance. But FTLOSMwas the first time I actually listened to a CD and felt like I knew what he was TRYING to do, but that he somewhat missed the mark....

I have to wonder if it suits Mr. Perry's interests to just keep everyone guessing and hoping. That is what he has been doing for 10 years now. I don't see any formal retirement memo coming in the near future, although as every year passes, my doubts escalate that he will do any major recording or touring ever again.

He's said it a few times over the last couple years. Along the lines of:

"I am not now nor have any future plans of singing with Journey."

That's as close as we're going to get to a memo.
