Billy Joel doesn't sing on his anti-war song

NEW YORK (AP) -- Billy Joel has released a new pop single, the anti-war "Christmas in Fallujah." Just don't expect to hear his voice on it.

Billy Joel gave his newest song, "Christmas in Fallujah," to 21-year-old Cass Dillon.

At 58, Joel felt he was too old to sing the song, which was inspired by letters the Piano Man received from soldiers in Iraq. So he gave it to Cass Dillon, a 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Long Island.

"I thought it should be somebody young, about a soldier's age," Joel said in a statement on his Web site. "I wanted to help somebody else's career. I've had plenty of hits. I've had plenty of airplay. I've had my time in the sun. I think it's time for somebody else, maybe, to benefit from my own experience."

Dillon said he was thrilled to be asked by Joel.

"When someone of that stature, with that history of great songs behind him with such a huge catalog asks you to sing something he's written, there's nothing you can do but be completely honored to perform," Dillon said in a statement.

"Christmas in Fallujah" went on sale Tuesday on Apple Inc.'s iTunes. Net proceeds will be donated to Homes for Our Troops, which builds homes for severely wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thoughts?

Sounds to me like Joel realized that ultimately this was a bad idea, and rather than have his audience boo him (which has been happening when artists try this garbage) he'd rather play "pass the buck." What a fuckin' creep.

Doesn't sound familiar...but it sounds like Billy is content with his place in life. Good for him!

The only 2 people I can think of that get away with this shit are Ted Negent and Charlie Daniels because they know their crowds are a bunch of gun toting, right wing nutjobs. Me being one of them.

I went to see John Mellencamp here a year or two ago and he pulled that stunt too. Pissed me off because I had to sit there and watch a 20 minute video up on the screen of anti-war footage while he was off stage resting his fat ass. That's not what I paid for. John Fogerty opened up for him and I ended up liking him WAY BETTER than Mellencamp even though I originally went to see Mellencamp. Forgerty totally rocked and Mellencamp looked old, overweight & didn't move around much. You ever listen to a Mellencamp interview? He usually comes across as a cocky asshole.

Mellencamp IS and asshole. I'm surprised Fogerty didn't do the same thing. He's a very outspoken critic of the war I believe. I do respect him for keeping it out of his show, though. That's all you can ask for.
