Someone's taken the time to compare SP, SA, DC and AP. No JSS in the clip.

Wait, nevermind, someone stole my speaker cables anyway...

That was pretty cool. Augeri sounded spot on imitating Perry's original vocal almost exactly but Pineda really does sound in another league here. Good stuff, thanks.

Except for Deen, they all sound very similar. However, Arnel screams too much. SA was the greatest soundalike, but none of them sang with the passion that SP did. With that said, I don't think the casual fan listening from far away from the stage would know the difference.

That was a good comparison, though.

I definately think that Perry's power to emote (more evident later on in his career) is what puts Perry at the top of our lists. And to tie this in to another conversation I think it is the Sam Cooke/R&B influence on Perry that made this so powerful.

Maybe in song. Which is why it could come from his influences. But it seems in real life he is very closed off and guarded.

Maybe to the public eye, which is probably pretty smart, considering. But I'd bet in his personal life/real life he wears his heart on his sleeve too. Look at how long it took him to get over Sherry and the hurt of the whole Journey thing. Besides I think your heart has to be pretty out there to write some of those songs.

I agree it is smart to keep image in check publicly. But IMO the fact that he held on to the Sherry thing AND the Joureny thing for so long make me think he internalizes it all too much INSTEAD of wearing it out there. But that is the great thing about boards like this...all the different viewpoints...
I just see him as INTROspective...and that is why he churns out the songs he does.

See and that is the one that turned me off when I saw it last week. :? Can't understand how somebody doesn't think he sounds just like Perry. Sounds just like Perry (tone), but there is something missing. Just doesn't do it for me, but hey to each his own. :)

Hmmm, you've got a point there too Dave. Maybe I'm getting "wearing his heart on his sleeve" mixed up with "sensitive".

But in the very same clip Steve Augeri sounded EXACTLY like Steve Perry. I mean, there was literally no difference at all. Did you like Augeri?

Personally I think Arnel's voice sounded much more powerful than any of the others in that clip at least. Same tone just more forward sounding.

Okay, I'll probably get blasted for this from all the guys out there, but it has been my experience that men in general (and this is a huge generalization), can run multimillion dollar companies, but have troubles running their own lives. 8)

I agree with that and that is his way of expressing himself. I've always thought that. And in my opinion FTLOSM is his way of expressing his apologies to the people he has hurt in the past.

Both sound, or try to, too much like Perry for my taste. And that is where my feelings of tribute band come in. :? See, I thought tone-wise Arnel sounded much more like Perry maybe because his vocals are more powerful. Don't get me wrong, Arnel has a great voice. There is just something missing in it for me. And I just don't feel the new, invigorated and excited feelings I had about Journey again, anymore. They've once again gone back into irrelevance for me.

I'll just listen to my classic Journey and scoop up any new material from JSS and EM and God-willing, Perry some day. :D

I hope you get the chance to check out the new Journey material if and when it arises. Perhaps Arnel might make more of an impact for you when singing original music? Likewise it might turn me off the band - but I doubt it!

well im not a die-hard Journey fan. still fairly new to the fold.

My first impression is (apart from Dean who you cant hear so well) how very similar tonally they sound.
Its amazing how Steve A sounds like Steve Perry and Arnel sounds alot like both

But to be honest, and just my opinion, Steve Perry sounds the best as you can hear its kinda his song and he's into what he's singing.
Steve A sounds a very good 2nd.

Arnel has a fantastic voice but to me seems to be focusing on the quality of the vocals and not the emotion of the song.

Dean i cant hear too well above a few thousand backing singers.

Everyone has a different timbre. Plus Steve Perry has that extra something that separates him from the rest. Augeri has a great voice but not as powerful as Perry. He also has a lot less vibrato. Arnel will do a good job singing the dirty dozen. He seems have a bit more power than Steve A. I'm curious about the new material. Overall I have to agree with SteveForever on this one. They're all good but Perry...

Perry - the originator. He created the sound....HIS sound. Everybody that has and will follow was chosen to try like hell to replicate him. Ain't happenin. Soto was the only one not chosen for that reason. He was just used to finish out the tour. Such a shame. Taking a new direction with Soto and not trying to rub everybody's nose in a Perry impersonator would have kept me listening and buying. But nooooooooooo.....

They have also "taken the time" to pick renditions by Jeff and Deen that are of such poor quality you can't make a fair decision. Perry's version is flawless. An absolutely wonderful example of why he possesses the very best voice in music history. Augeri's version is very solid as is Arnel's. With a bit of work I could see Arnel's becoming even better. He certainly has the chops.

Perry followed closely by Arnel. Man...if Arnel gets the emotion going, things could get very interesting in the Journey camp.
