Was completely unknown and He was found on youtube and picked up by Journey? Would you be saying the same thing you are about the new guy? Not to mention Perry would be in the same spot, like the 5th or 6th singer.. Say they just booted JSS and went with Perry.. Would you still be pissed? I want an honest assessment!

If a good band found Steve Perry and he was willing to sing for them, I can assure you that he wouldn't be singing cover songs from the last singer.

Yes..

seems like none of this would matter if perry's contribution to journey wasn't what it is. we wouldn't have a legacy sound for jon to try and duplicate, so i'd say the current singer wouldn't really matter as the one we all love would not have been in the band while the hits were created.

Yeah, there was a Journey before Steve Perry and they recorded an album that is better than every SP-fronted release.

Didn't do much for them at the time. They were about to be dropped by their label. Groove to it if you want to though.

You're reaching way too far. Give it up. The ones that are williing to give this farce a chance will and the ones that won't, won't. If you like this guy then enjoy what he does, but QUIT TRYING TO CRAM IT DOWN ALL OF OUR THROATS. Do you understand what I'm saying?

You have to stop focusing on the 10 or so vocal people here who won't give any new singer a chance, unless it's a distant friend, cousin, etc. The bottom line is, any singer is going to have to pay their dues and sing their ass off to gain any respect around this joint. ;) Personally I just want to hear some Journey music live again, perhaps hear some new material. I like to see the boys jamming again. And I'm stoked they have someone who can bring back that nice tenor sound. In a perfect world I would have Perry 1st, Augeri 2nd, Arnel 3rd. JSS should stick to his rock roots and keep rockin the harder stuff. He's obviously made for that and totally kicks ass at it. ;)

Sorry, that's bullshit. They HAD someone else and their label was about to DUMP them. They DUMPED the someone else and replaced him with Steve Perry, but the band DIDN'T WANT PERRY! HERBIE SHOVED HIM DOWN THEIR THROATS. THEY WERE NOT GOING IN THE MUSICAL DIRECTION WE NOW CALL JOURNEY!! WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THIS?

It's only AFTER Perry joined the group did the group start to gain a viable fan base. This wasn't just because of his voice but because of the musical direction he steered the group. It was his R&B influence on the song writing, melodies and arrangements COUPLED with his unique voice that made Journey stand out. It's what gave us the greatest hits the band lives off of to this day. Perry had just as much an influence on Neal's playing as Neal had on his vocals. Here is what the band was working with before Perry:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8wDxlrijN7c

It's VERY easy to look back on what's been created and take it for granted, but you haven't clue one about what happens when you change the collaboration of a group of artists. One member change can make or break the popular sound of a band. Another front man would have yielded a VERY different sound and I doubt very much any of us would have heard of let alone still be fans of a band named Journey had Perry not joined.

You think just any old singer would have created the music you are now a fan of? You think it's so easy for a band to find success? Sorry, you're star treking in the twilight zone. Neal himself agrees with this sentiment. He said so on the VH1 behind the music special. If you didn't see it, go back and watch it. He himself said: Perry brought the success. Perry wanted to steer the ship and they let the reigns go.

This has got to be one of the stupidest fucking questions
I have seen on here in a long time...

Ok, we get it. You are happy w/ the Arnel decision.

Fuck, now I know how all the beloved Wigglers
(and YES, I guess I was a Closet-Wiggler in hindsight!)
felt when some of us were trying to cram Jeff down
their throats!

I guess we had this coming

I'm actually looking forward to hearing what Arnel brings to the table. I am giving him a chance. What pisses me off is when people dismiss what Perry contributed to this band's sound like it's so easily replaceable. This is what happens when they hear the hits created by Perry sung again and again and again by Perry wannabe's. After a while, his stylings have become copied so much that to some people, they forget what was so special about the guy who originated the material in the first place.

Copying is much easier than originating people. Arrival is a perfect example of this. It's a wannabe Journey album but doesn't rise to the quality level set by this band with Perry at the vocal, melody, arrangement and lyric writing helm.

No, it's not a trap question. What it is, is another pointless "what if" question. All the 'what ifs' int he world aren't going to change what actually did happen, and none of the answers to these made up scenarios are going validate their choice of Arnel as their singer.

Steve Perry has already been validated - he joined the band, contributed stallar musicianship, and they sold millions of records. You can't argue that and trying to discredit Perry with all the 'what if this or that happened' and 'what if they found Perry on YouTube' stuff is ridiculous. The only thing that's going to validate their choice of Arnel is results, just same as when they chose Perry. He had to do the work and prove himself. That part is now up to Arnel and it's up to Journey to prove themselves. Not us and not the 'what ifs'. People responded to Journey with Perry because they loved what they heard. Whether that's going to happen again remains to be seen.
