Sorry, that's bullshit. They
HAD someone else and their label was about to
DUMP them. They
DUMPED the someone else and replaced him with Steve Perry, but the band
DIDN'T WANT PERRY! HERBIE SHOVED HIM DOWN THEIR THROATS. THEY WERE NOT GOING IN THE MUSICAL DIRECTION WE NOW CALL JOURNEY!! WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THIS?
It's only
AFTER Perry joined the group did the group start to gain a
viable fan base. This wasn't just because of his voice but because of the musical direction he steered the group. It was his R&B influence on the song writing, melodies and arrangements
COUPLED with his unique voice that made Journey stand out. It's what gave us the greatest hits the band lives off of to this day. Perry had just as much an influence on Neal's playing as Neal had on his vocals. Here is what the band was working with before Perry:

It's
VERY easy to look back on what's been created and take it for granted, but you haven't clue one about what happens when you change the collaboration of a group of artists. One member change can make or break the popular sound of a band. Another front man would have yielded a
VERY different sound and I doubt very much any of us would have heard of let alone still be fans of a band named Journey had Perry not joined.
You think just any old singer would have created the music you are now a fan of? You think it's so easy for a band to find success? Sorry, you're star treking in the twilight zone. Neal himself agrees with this sentiment. He said so on the VH1 behind the music special. If you didn't see it, go back and watch it. He himself said: Perry brought the success. Perry wanted to steer the ship and they let the reigns go.
