I have a Musically Retarded Friend

Me: you're the type of bloke that thinks any instrumental solo is over the top
Him: not any... but some solos just dont do much for me
Him: when too many songs have too many fast paced showing off solos, it gets old
Me: remember that some of these guitarists may not be showing off, but anything less than a quick, shreddy solo wouldn't suit the song at all
Him: alot of the time its true but not all of the time
Me: my favorite guitarist, as you may know, Neal Schon... his trademark is having very melodic solos that mirror the vocal line.. the kind of solos you can sing along to... he builds his solos gradually, progressing rhythmically before he hits you with a very brief blistering run.. and back into the melody he goes...
that's his trademark, he doesn't always do that, but it's what he's most known for... and he does it so well
Him: its when solos become the main focus of songs when its a problem
Me: quite possibly one of the more soulful guitarists in rock music
Him: alot of people do that kind of thing though in soulful and none soulfull manners
Him: not every song that builds up needs a shreddy guitar solo
Me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q32I7RpoIZk
if you have time an an open mind, check out the very passionate guitar work on this funky number
Me: and, yes, that's Randy Jackson
Him: ok
Me: it's a "pop-rock" song, but it's extremely good
Him: very generic so far... but I will listen to all of it
Him: its more power pop that anything else
Me: just wait until the guitar solo man.. if that's not passion, i don't know what is
Me: "Steve Perry bled every time he sang" -Jon Cain
Him: its a standard song bridge
Him: nothing really that passionate
Me: how can you not feel and see the passion radiating from these guys?
Him: no more than any other band
Him: I could find Dolly Parton videos where the same thing is done
Him: he played "epic" notes but Steve Perrys voice was just poppy, he wasnt looking over emotional, its more the note choice than how they played it
Me: i'm not saying you're wrong, but i am saying you're ridiculous.... lol
Him: passion didnt radiate off them
