So... just WHY do you love Journey's music?

Postby ProgRocker53 » Thu Dec 13, 2007 9:20 am

I'm sure this has been done before, but I'm trying to get a friend to see why I'm so passionate about Journey. It's not working very well, so I'd love to see what everyone else has to say about their love of one of the best bands ever.

For me, there are plenty of reasons, but the most crucial ingredient and what drew me to the band in the first place...

Steve Perry, plain and simple.

The music, man. Its hard to explain. It goes from "Just the same way" to "open arms" it makes me feel right regardless of mood. Music that makes me sing along, as well as those around me. Vocals that make you say "WOW!!!" Concerts that make you wanna take guitar lessons, concerts that you never forget. Thats Journey for me.

It's everything. The individual musicians and their talents, and then how they all meshed together to form something greater that the sum of their parts.

Starting with "Of A Lifetime" thru "World Gone Wild".

It truely is hard for me to define why Journey has far and away always been my favorite band. There is just something about the music that touches or agrees with my soul more than any other band has ever been able to do.

It really is hard to put into words. Yes they are all great musicians, but that can be said about many bands.

Possibly because there music seems to allow me to "escape" (no pun intended) reality more easily than others. Hard for me to explain. I too have friends that can't understand why I am so into this band and it's music, and I can't explain it to them. The music just touches you somewhere at your core or it doesn't.

I agree with what has been said above. The music soothes me when I'm down, it pumps me up when I'm not. Great soaring vocals with fantastic hooks and melodies. I can not understand people that don't like Journey. I want to ram it down their fucking throats!!

You guys have all hit it on the head even though you're finding it hard to explain in words.

You all FEEL something from the music. Journey's music resonates with its fans on a emotional level because of the heart involved in crafting the songs. It's not hair band music and it's not just average melodic rock. The melodies set a cinematic emotional stage for each of us individually.

This is also why Journey isn't special without Perry and why neither Neal nor Perry solo don't achieve the same quality level as when they collaborate together. Perry and Neal together take us to that emotional place. That's that special chemistry between them. Perry's voice is an extension of Neal's guitar and they both tap that soulful emotional place for us to share.

Journey without Perry has been surface technique at best. It lacks the heart they had with Perry's involvement not only as a singer, but as songwriter and melody maker too. Without him, they might as well be Bad English.

If Arnel can bring that emotional element back to the band, then he'll have been the right choice. If he can't, he'll be one in a long line of disappointing mistakes.

I like love songs and Journey is known for some really cool slow rock love songs, like the band Foreigner and Toto. It happened in highschool, my girlfriend and I played hooky from school. In my bedroom I would put on something from Journey, Foreigner or Toto and as the music played, it set the stage to some good romance that I've never forgotten.

the first time i heard journey, i was watching caddyshack, and rodney said lets dance, and played anyway you want it.
i was hooked, great guitars, awsome vocals, just good party rock music, not artsy, not political
corporate rock rules.

Neal Schon + Steve Perry = EMOTIONAL MAGIC!!! And........I don't think everyone is able to achieve that level of emotion, and that's why people can't understand why we love Journey music so much.
"as long as they have to carry DSB as their banner, it looks like Perry will be right there with them as an overseer, ready to wield his veto power on all things Classic Journey." As quoted by Don on 12/7/2010

Good hooks, great drumming (SMITTY!), and unbelieveable vocals.

Ok, one more thing. Keytar!

They made some interesting music pre-Perry and liked it. Then Perry entered the picture and all hell broke loose. They were incredible. Emphasis on "WERE". Almost a euphoric feeling listening to Schon, Perry, Cain, Smitty & Valory. It will never be the same under any circumstances for me, after Perry's tenure.

Why do I love Journey's music: the drama!! ;)

Honestly, there has always been an emotional tie to their music. It was a matter of timing and all the right pieces. 5 horribly talented individuals clicking together at a time when the music world was ready to take notice. And I was there!! Granted, I don't listen to bass all that much...but the other four were all so GOOD at what they do. And I figure Ross would have to be as well to keep up with Smitty.

soaring vocals, awesome lead guitar, sonic drums, grooving bass lines.

Neal's leads and Perry's vocals just meshed into something indescribably great that will never be matched by anyone ever again. Period.

28 you really need to bring back the Marvin Av. I don't even know what the hell I'm looking at with the one you have now. :D
