My personal favourite cover is John Farnhams version of Help by the Beatles. In my opinion its better than the original and you relise just what an amazing singer Farnham was.

Others i also think are better than the originals are:

Johnny Cash - Hurt (one of my favourite ever songs)
and
Jeff Buckley-Hallelujah

A while back the Foo Fighters did a cover of the old tune "Baker Street". I recall really enjoying their take on that.

And if it counts - Anything from the Black Crowes w/ Jimmy Page live CD from awhile ago also.

Lastly - there is a harder version of Genesis' "Land of Confusion" that was kind of cool too.

That was Disturbed doing "Land of Confusion." I thought they played it pretty safe on that one, but I love their cover of TFF's "Shout."

It's easy covering something that's been done and trying to make it better or putting your own individual stlye to it, althoguh the Beatles prolific catalogue can be covered, Walrus by Styx is a good example but at the end of the day no Beatles song can be covered better than they originally sang it. Okay the Farnham cover is good but it ain't got that Beatle magic. So many Beatle's tracks have been covered but more out of appreciation than trying to better the original, coming from Liverpool isn't this a capital punishment offence? I wish Macca was back on the boards...Drew, come on it's time

i do see what your saying , but it was mcartney or lennon who said "this is how the beatles should of done it". i never got the emotional feeling of the song until i heard farnham sing it, and in my opinion interperet emotion from the song that was never there

You talk a lot of sense but if that's the case are the two of them saying they fucked up a little with the Beatles sound...at the time I bet they thought it was perfect. Think of it like an songwriter starting out, thirty years on, they're always going to say we could have done it better. Could you ever imagine Journey saying Escape, yeh, we could have done that better, no fuckin' way. I think it's more to do with Lennon and Macca and all the bullshit between them, don't you?

I am not a big fan of cover albums really. I love original songs much more than covers. But if a cover song is done better than the original, it's cool. 8)

I'd never heard that version before. Wow!
I won't say it's better than the original (sorry, I really love that song). But I will say that it's just as good. Like the acoustic version of "Layla". Still a great song, just sung differently.
Thanks for the link!

Yep, John Farnham is in his own league, above the rest in the vocal ability. Look at Perry, once a great singer... now doesn't perform anymore. This guy is crazy, just ask Andrew, he'll tell ya
