Commentary: You can't take Christ out of Christmas

(CNN) -- This whole push to remove Christ from the Christmas season has gotten so ridiculous that it's pathetic.

Because of all the politically correct idiots, we are being encouraged to stop saying "Merry Christmas" for the more palatable "Happy Holidays." What the heck are "Seasons Greetings"? Can someone tell me what season we are greeting folks about? A Christmas tree? Oh, no! It's now a holiday tree. Any Christmas song that even remotely mentions Christ or has a religious undertone is being axed for being overtly religious. And I'm sorry, forget X-M-A-S. Malcolm X? Yes. X replacing Christ? No.

Don't get me wrong; I'm very respectful of other religions. I don't want anyone to be afraid of discussing the Jewish faith when we address Hanukkah. And we shouldn't dismiss Muslims when the annual pilgrimage to Mecca is held during December. In fact, Americans are so ignorant of other faiths that we can all learn from one another.

But this seeming backlash against Christianity is bordering on the absurd, and we should continue to remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.

I know that may sound strident, but it's true. We spend an inordinate amount of time focused on shopping and buying gifts, but really, what does any of this have to do with the birth of Jesus? We have families all over the nation killing themselves to buy a tree they can't afford, running up their credit to buy toys and other gifts, all in an effort to make someone else happy.

What if families decided to forgo gifts, and instead, used their shopping days giving back to those in need? What if more of us went into our closets, grabbed old toys and clothes, repackaged them, and provided them as gifts to those without? Instead of gorging on food, what if we used some of the dough to feed those who are in need? What if we blew off those gift cards to electronic retailers and signed up with Networkforgood.org, and gave someone a gift card to their favorite charity?

Sure, I know I sound like a reincarnation of a flower child, but really, do we have to be so crass during the Christmas season?

Parents, don't be so consumed with the notion that your children will have a terrible Christmas because the tree isn't overflowing with gifts. The true love that you show them is more important than anything else.

America might be the king of capitalism, but secularism must never become so prevalent that our religious traditions are discarded.

That was a great post! I don't think they're "Borderdering on the absurd" though! They're fully fledged absurd with their push and agendas! THESE are the people who are ruining this country IMHO! I can't believe the levels that morality has sunk to, here in the last 30-40 years. When I was a kid, we NEVER locked our house or cars. Nowadays, try THAT and see how long you last! How about hitch hiking? You'd have to be crazy as hell to do that here now!

I'm not a "Bible thumper" here, but just look at the facts...they took prayer out of public schools. They've increased the words in high school science textbooks about "evolution" from about 1000 words in the 60's, to 10 to 15000 in the last 40 years. All the while, they've tried to get any mention about God or a "Higher power" removed from schools. They've made it okay for a teenage girl to get an abortion without ever informing the parents. They've said if you spank your kids, it's a form of child abuse and call DSS on you.

There are several organizations who are pushing all of this, but the biggest one that comes to mind is.........................You guessed it!............................The good old ACLU!

I could go on and on, but if anyone here doesn't understand why this country (and it's kids) are the way they are...

Let the games begin!!!

Personally........I make verbal notice of anyone taking the Christ out of Christmas.
I have issues with this, go ahead and note em.

Just so you all know the "Happy Holidays" heap is being piled on plow like here
in the land-oh-canucks too.

I am sickened by the absurdity of it.

All great points. I think everyone knows I'm rocking for The Rock (Jesus, not Dewayne Johnson... haha). I'm not personally so hopped up on Christmas as a holiday, but that's a topic of its own. I think there is an absolutely clear connection between trying to remove God from society, and the downhill slide of our society. I'm not talking about minimizing the influence of a bunch of hypocritical religious right-wing demagogues -- I'm talking about trying to X out the real deal -- hurting the ability for individuals to learn about and practice their own faith.

I absolutely believe that government should not interfere with religious affairs, and that's what the oft-misinterpreted "wall of separation between church and state" is all about -- the government not establishing a church or promoting a specific religion. But it's been allowed to be taken way out of context and used as a weapon and an excuse against Christianity especially. The ills of the country can be directly linked to the war against Christianity, or even just morality, in general. All the hypocritical power-hungry "Great Men of God" haven't helped things out a bit, so don't think I'm defending those guys...

I assume you mean the Democrats.

However, look no further than those corrupt motherfuckers over on 1600 Pennsy ave. Morality? You have got to be kidding me? This is by far, the most corrupt administration EVER. I thought George W Bush was going to put respect back in the White House? Haha, Bill Clinton got impeached and a blow job and is heads and shoulders above Bush/Cheney et al.

Give me a break.

Religion is killing this country and if you look closely, religion is killing the GOP..I love it.

You are correct, but at least the PC aren't full blown pissing on our rights that are contained in said Constitution. The republican party, and Bush/Cheney have stripped all that we own. I am embarrassed to say I live in America under these sonsofbitches.

Oh, by the way, I DO believe in God. I do know he must be embarrassed that the United States felt the liberty to include his name on the official currency. I bet God wished Canada would endorse him rather than the US.

I wish Godspeed to Hell for Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz and every other cocksucking dicktainted pussy lipped son of a bitch in the GOP. All of em, go to Hell.

Whew!

Time to go get plowed with Soto. We are going to get shittay!

RF, thank heaven the Dems are staying in session so W can't appoint any more thumpers to the Bench. Religion does NOT belong in politics. Look up separation of church and state. If you need guidance, it's in the Constitution.

Show me ONE reference to democrats here!??? The only reference I named specifically was the ACLU. I also never said a word about Bush, or Clinton. You did! Politicians have been corrupt as long as they've been in existence...it's the nature of the beast. Some are more corrupt then others, but they all have to be a little dishonest to get where they are.

I'm referring ONLY to organizations who are stripping this country of it's right to worship God (Whom this country's foundations were built upon!) in public places. That includes schools.

If you think religion is killing this country...let's hear an example.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WHBQ FOX13 myfoxmemphis.com) -- -- Henri Brooks sent out an email inviting individuals to celebrate Kwanzaa at County Commission Chambers. This has sparked quite a controversy and a lawsuit brought by Probate Court Clerk, Chris Thomas.

white members of the board don't agree with this being suitable and are trying to block the kwanzaa celebration.this is the most racially divided city you'll ever see.

Separation of Church and state IS identified in the Constitution. You should read it sometime.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

So be it.
