Something to hide, (blimey that vocal harmony between the guitar and voice amazing)
Mother father,
Winds of march,
Sweet and simple (he does a lovely vocal role thing during the second verse and then all that great high stuff),
Why cant this night,
Faithfully,
Still they ride,
Still she cries,
Open arms,
Happy to give

Depends on what you're looking for -
I think Somethin' To Hide, Patiently, and Sweet and Simple are great examples of Perry's range and control.
Still They Ride and It's Just The Rain I think are two good examples of his ability to emote.
Maybe Mother Father is the best example of all of his talents.

You know, when all is said and done, I have to go with the song that really made me go nuts over Steve: Stay Awhile! I've loved songs after it, but it holds a special place in the repertoire!

Mother Father,Sweet and Simple & Good Morning Girl.Range,control,emotion...those three songs sum it up for me.
For vocal acrobatics it's Lady Luck and Lay It Down.

Mother, Father
Why Can't This Night Go On Forever (his vocals at the end of this track are almost glass-shattering)!
Faithfully - This song probably represents what made Perry who he was, in terms of showing his ability, like nobody else, to emote, through the lyrics of a song. All you have to do is listen to Jonathan Cain's version of this same song, and even the Perry haters will realize, pretty quickly, that without Perry's soaring vocals, there isn't a single Journey track that would have ever seen the light of day!

Dear lord, I don't think I could ever pick just
one no matter how hard I tried, but this...

...is a pretty spot on description. The crescendo at the end of that song has to be the best Perry/Smith combo moment ever.

Impossible to decide. They are all stellar. Mother Father really is above and beyond the call of duty, though.

Pretty much agree with this. Still They Ride is my all-time favorite Journey song. Just give me those soaring vocals.
Actually IMO, Mother Father showcases all of their talents very well!

So many memorable songs, that's what makes us devoted SP/Journey fans, whether from the old days or just discovered the Voice a few years ago.
I agree with John from Boston, Faithfully is the song that defined SP at his vocally best. The earlier songs may be at his peak, technically proficient-wise, but I like his later, deeper voice better.
I absolutely cannot listen to WCTNGOF without a lump in my throat. The way he emoted out the lyrics, no one can ever deliver that song like SP.

Mother, Father
Sweet and Simple
Something To Hide
Homemade Love
Anyway (I'm a woman and I can barely hit the note he nails at the end!)
There is a live clip of "Patiently" on YouTube where I think Steve sounds better than he ever did. Absolute perfection. The vocal acrobatics are not as prominent, but his tone is gorgeous. It doesn't get better than this, folks.

The guy is just fucking amazing. I am a professional vocalist and I have no idea how he does what he does. Must be the nose.

Of course, all of Perry's vocal performances rank among the best in history. But in order to determine which is the "most outstanding", we must look at criteria.
Are we discussing technical difficulty? Then most assuredly "Mother, Father", "Lay It Down", "Sweet and Simple", "Winds of March", "Somethin' To Hide", "Still They Ride", and "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" are some of the very hardest songs to sing, given Perry's glass-breaking head voice and falsetto.
But not all of my favorite Perry-led songs are his most difficult to sing. As I've said before, I am really partial to Perry's voice from 1984 to present day. "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" might be my all time favorite Journey ballad, though not without competition -- you can't top the musical brilliance working between Neal, Jon, Steve, and Perry at that point. But I also enjoy his huskier voice in "When You Love A Woman" and "If He Should Break Your Heart".
Eh... damn. I've gotta go with WCTNGOF... but barely.

I couldn't help but notice that the woman in your avatar looks remarkably like my future wife. :p
"After the Fall" is starts of decent. I'm just not impressed with the lack of a kickass Neal solo at the end. But the chorus is haunting in that the band harmonizes so well.

It wasn't my favorite from that album, but as the years pass, I really appreciate it. Stellar pipes.
The avatar is Tampa Bay QB Jeff Garcia's wife...Carmella DeCesare. Quite fine, I must say.

Carmella is from my hometown, Cleveland Ohio. She met Garcia when he was the Browns quarterback.
As was already mentoned here on MR, Carmella looks a lot like Eva Longoria.

I think it's a dead heat between Frontiers era tracks Liberty and After The Fall.
And, incidentally, After The Fall IS a perfect song from vox to bass, to axe, to drums to keys.

Yea, but that's a NoCal/Bay Area lisp, ala Huey Lewis.
And what a quarterback Garcia is. Haven't been able to confirm the rumors that he played "Scary German Guy" in The Monster Squad though.

Iggles made a mistake letting him go. He loved playing for them.
