I have been thinking about this since I heard that Arnel is the front man for Journey, trying to come up with another legendry classic rock band, or any band as a matter of fact the has had an Asian front man. Can't come up with any, is there a reason for that? mmmmmmm!

Can't think of a reason for it other than there's probably only half a dozen classic rock bands about which narrows the options somewhat. Luckily this Arnel guy has got a serious set of pipes in the style of Perry/Augeri and I reckon he'll do a great job. Am praying that Journey come to the UK again in 2008. Cause I'll be there for sure. Happy New Year.

No, I can't either. But we ought to point out that the reservations about the situation that most of us are expressing have absolutely nothing to do with Arnel being Asian whatsoever- as a matter of fact they have nothing to do with Arnel himself.

I agree, I was just thinking from a business point of view, there is no precedent I can think of.

Actually, it really does depend on what your definition of Asian is. People of East Indian decent are referred to as Asian. So with that being the case, I can think of one very famous Asian who became a rock legend, yet hid his identity. His reasoning for the non-disclosure was due to fear that the general public would not accept him (an Asian) fronting a rock group at the time.
Regardless of his concealment/reasoning, he became a hugely successful singer/songwriter who is also regarded (by many) as being one of the best Rock vocalist of all time. To this day, many are not aware that Farrokh Bulsara's first course of action, after leaving India, was to change his identity to something less ethnic....Freddy Mercury.

I don't think the issue has anything to do with Arnel being Asian at all.
I think that the fans in general feel like we were lied to and have lost some respect for the band in the way that they handled both Steve Augeri's departure and JSS.
I think that people are just frustrated and angry with them in a sense for the way they handled things.
I have no idea if people will embrace Arnel as the singer or not. For myself, at least I have a hard time with the choices theyhave made and the way they have treated their singers.
Nothing to do with Arnel personally. He is in a tough spot either way you look at it.

No... Eric Martin is not Asian. I believe I read recently he is originally from New York.
He was a really nice guy and one of the highlights of the MRFest for me.

I think Eric Martin is kind of short like Mike Myers too.

Hoobastank's lead singer Douglas Robb is half-Japanese and half-Scottish.
or
What about Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls? She also has a deal to a solo that could potentially make her the "it" Asian girl, It's been tried before with small success using Bay Area native, Jocelyn Enriquez (A filipina).

Maybe Apl.D Ap of Black Eyed Peas?
Not a front guy but lead guitarist Kirk Hammet of Metallica is also half-Filipino.
While it maybe unusual, it's most certainly has been done. Each of those people up there have gone platinum.
I could add "High School Musical" lead Vanessa Ann Hudgens who is doing what Nicole is doing but at a level for tweens and teens.

I did not know that about the late, great Freddie. Thanks for that tidbit. Fascinating!
My only knock on Pineda at this point is that he has never shown any stage presence in the clips I have seen. His voice is outstanding, and hopefully (for his own good) he can fix the diction issues.

Apl D is full Filipino I think. He put a song about his life there on one of the BEP albums. Don't remember it though.

The Pussycat, Nicole has a tremendous voice. I only saw her once with the group on good morning, America & I was impressed.
Not that this has anything to do with the thread really, but did you know that the Lennon Sisters are hispanic? Their mother was & their father, I think, was Scottish heritage.

Let's see. How many bands in Japan, China, Philippines, Korea etc. have a white front man? Can't come up with any, is there a reason for that? Yes there is, because they probably would suck at singing in Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Tagalog.

She does have a great voice. Wouldn't her and JSS make for one sexy duet?!

For me too.

Doesn't look asian to me though. From the reaction on that TMG dvd and an older Mr. Big dvd from Tokyo, they sure love him over there though.

Enrique Iglesia's mom is a native Filipina who moved to Spain when she was 18. Julio Iglesias and Isabel Preysler met when their both unheard of yet. She then went into modelling across Europe and landed on hosting a Spanish TV show. Currently, still regarded as one of the most elegant woman in Spain.

It is both. Ball is in Journey's court - but that has already been stated. Bring it on...

Filipino band Death Angel (California) - never really heard of them before to be quite honest. Just listened via their site but not my cup of tea. Good on them though.

How many Death Angel Bands are there? If only one, then they've been around for at least twenty years because someone told me about the band "Death Angel" back in 88'.

Said it before and I will say it again.
Journey picked a little shrimp who can barely speak English. Making a lead singer change was stupid and unnecessary. The youtube thing is a b.s. way of them trying to sound current and internet savy. I in no way believe that is how Arnel was found.
Arnel makes Journey into an American Idol/rock Star INXS act. A total joke. Led Zeppelin they are not.
That's my opinion.
Theeese eese a swong fwom Juhney. Sorry - go listen to the Faithfully youtube clip. It's a joke and I am not afraid to say it.

I don't think these fit into the "legendary classic rock band" category you mention, but of course there were two good Japanese rock bands -- Loudness and EZO!
I absolutely loved EZO... especially "Fire Fire". Great artwork in that CD booklet, too.

Loudness did have some dynamite music, it's the vocals that turns me off. I saw the lead singer of Loudness (Minoru Niihara) recently in person during my last trip to Japan. That guy has aged well. He still looks very young compared to others his same age.

if neal was reading this forum MONTHS ago he would have seen us talking about arnel... even way before jss was let go. i was so blown away by arnel's vocals i even jokingly told jeff to watch his back. if it wasn't for jss i thought this guy would be a perfect match for journey.
sp didn't have much of a stage presence early on (from clips i have seen)... it was his voice that caught people's attention... and he is kinda hot. }:C))
i'm so tempted to go see journey... just so i can get a first-hand account. i'll go if deano goes! }:C) i'll wear a "nomofro" "i'm with jss" shirt! }=C))

I don't want to offend any race mate but that's not the accent Filipino have. You've mistaken it for something else. The accent is so varied. Also, it has a bit of Spanish accent but having been influenced by US for years had further added to the variations.

Listen to the youtube clip. I'm merely parroting what he said the way he said it.
Filipino is not a race by the way.
