I fantastic ballad imo, some really nice lyrcis and a great chorus. But why oh why do they have to have that awful noise for the first minute and a half of the song, it makes no sense. So does anybody have a reasoning behind this?

That "awful noise" is called "Strung Out" and it's a seperate song altogether. On "Balance" it was a seperate track. I'm not sure why they included it on the best of like that...

and the story behind it...is actually pretty cool. It was actually recorded in 1983, prior to the recording of 1984 . The noise you hear is eddie van halen messing with the strings of a Grand Piano by throwing ping pong balls, D-cell batteries, knives and forks at them.

I once made a video to the song for some friends who were getting married, but I've since lost it.

I pulled III out the other day. Hadn't in a long time.
The song that Eddie sings...

That is THE worst rock vocal I've ever heard. I see people here do things and go "yeah, my voice ain't very good, but I try". The stuff I hear sung here is leaps and bounds above Eddie's vocals. Terrible. It's amazing that a guy that can play THAT well has THAT sense of pitch with his voice. Yikes!

Then you have Neal Young. That fucker can't carry a tune in a barrel, but in his case, you love it.

"How Many Say I"...The last song on the album.

That entire album was a disaster, Dave. A couple decent songs, maybe, but other than that - BLECH! Like a dumbo, I bought the limited edition - the one in a metal case. After listening to it one time, I was so pissed off at myself for spending the money on that POS.

Agreed...I liked "Without You", "Fire in the Hole", "Year to the Day" and, to some degree, "Ballot or the Bullet". The rest was crap.

Amazing song..very un VH like. Amazing song. Sammy's vocals are just brilliant on this one. Surprising harmonies too.

I still like Once off of VH3. Love that solo with the 6-string bass.

Not Enough is brutal.

One of the weighty pieces of ballast that damn near sinks Balance for me.

Once, off III now THAT is a Van Halen tune.

They should've spared us the rest of the CD and just released "Once" as a single. Glad to see I'm not the only one that digs that tune.

"Not Enough" is one of my very favortie Van Hagar songs. The video is pretty cool, too - done on the roof of an old building, probably in LA. Hope you are doing well, PO8!

As a whole...the album sucks. Without You, Once, Fire In The Hole, and A Year To The Day, and to a much lesser extent, One I Want were the only REALLY worthwhile tracks on the album in my opinion.

As for Balance...aside from Strung Out...it's an awesome album. Love every other song on it.

I absolutely crave songs like "Don't Tell me What Love Can Do," "The Seventh Seal," "Baluchitherium".... delicious, heavy stuff.

Haha, never noticed that. Reminds me of how "Love" was in like 4 titles in Arrival, and how every song title of Friga's solo career is something like "A Heart to Love" and "To Love a Heart" and shit.

love that song....simple yet very insightful lyrics. You can love and give honestly...but if the person has things that hold them back from accepting it as real,,,like being distrustful from past hurts...or their own insecurities...well then love is just not enough....when they cant see it when it comes along they will let it slip away because they dont trust....and their not honest about how they feel because they fear....so when they cant accept whats real..what you want to give honestly... then love hurts ya sometimes. Well..uh..nevermind... just figure thats what the song says..not that I can relate from personal experience or anything.

I played guitar for many years and have really good pitch. Things out of tune drive me crazy. That said, my voice is easily as bad as Eddie's. I just can't make my voice hold the pitch and my range is shit. So I can sympathize with Eddie! The only difference is I KNOW my voice is shit. He seems to think he can sing!

You are completly correct, according to Hagar.

Balance is by far my favorite Van Hagar album. Amazing stuff on that record.

VH3 would've been an interesting album by any other band, or as an Eddie solo album with "guest vocals" by Gary.

I think the VH3 lineup could've done some interesting things if they'd made a second album with Cherone involved in the writing from day one, but sadly, it was not to be. I know everyone's happy with the VH reunions but we haven't had any legitimate new music from them in 10 years. I don't care who's singing if I could get one, last, killer VH album of new material.

They had actually started laying down some music when Cherone left/got fired.

One of the tracks is Left For Dead on Cherone's Tribe Of Judah "Exit Elvis" album.
It is a terrific menacing rocker with a big VH III feel.


The rest of the album sucks, btw.

I always wondered if there were any tracks floating out there from their brief time in the studio for the second LP. I liked III, but anticipated something better with the next release. Oh well.

I agree with WalrusOct9…. New material would be friggin great!

One of my VH favorites too.It was really good to hear it again.Shit,gotta get rid of my Daughtry CD soon!

Btw,the location is surely in LA.I recognized the sign of the Orpheus Theatre (I think it's on Broadway),but I guess the video was done on the building across it.
Loved Sammy's looks as well,but Alex creeped me out.
