I think the backlash will be on the media though because its creating interest which is exactly what they want.

He is allowed to have any belief he wants. He claims to have all the answers. Alot of other people claim the same thing. He and Travolta have dumped alot of money into this organization so they can become somewhat "enlightened". He uses his "star power" to gain them attention.

MPO I think he is full of baked benas and brussel sprouts.

And I've been saying this for years... I've never seen an actor (or any celebrity for that matter) so obsessed with his image before -- he's alllll about image and publicity, and you can tell when you see him speak, every gesture, every facial expression, every little cock of his head seems calculated to make him look as dashing, intriguing, whatever. He just comes off like an android, trying to put forth this image that he really is the guy you see in the movies. I heard that the cast from "Lions and Lambs" (Robert Redford, Meryl Streep) wouldn't even associate with him, they couldn't stand him that much.

There was a story just in the past few days about Katie Holmes appearing on David Letterman, and how robotic she seems. This new unauthorized autobiography of Cruise sounds like it's full of pure libel, but who knows -- might be some stuff in there that makes him nervous. He is a sham, and I hope his warts and skeletons get exposed for the whole world someday to knock him off his horse.

I think he is sweating bullets over this book. Oddly enough, it probably is something I would read. I never gave much thought to the body language he uses during interviews, but reading over your comments, I see exactly what you're talking about. The "macho pretty boy" image is always present! Very odd, indeed!

I am curious about one thing. Does Scientology limit recruitment to weathy, notable people or is anyone fair game? No, no, no, not looking to join up, but it seems the only Scientologists you hear of are in the entertainment field.

I remember many moons ago when I was trying to get some culture & so I read about a poetry reading in Hollywood. I dragged my husband (then boyfriend) to this place that turned out to be a huge mansion type place. We went into a dining area & sat down at a table & as I was looking around I saw a name place at one of the empty tables - it said, L. Ron Hubbard (who was dead, of course!) I was like, "sh*t, we're in that cult place! My husband, (the anti-religion guy reader of "speculative fiction") rolled his eyes & gave me that look...he then told me about Hubbard having been a science fiction writer who started scientology.

But, whatever floats one's boat - there seems to be a lot of scientologists in the entertainment industry who swear this helped them (John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Priscilla & Lisa Presley)...I just dislike when anyone or any religion says they are the ONE and their way is the only way.

I used to work across the street from the Scientology building in Los Angeles. Celebrities are big into it because the money they put into it helps for the
"pool" of publicity support. Membership helps their career, period.

Dude ALWAYS delivers like he's shooting a scene; like he's trying to put forth this image that he's actually one of the characters from his movies. I've seen several clips of him just speaking to people, like news reporters, talk show hosts, and even the classic clip of the fake interviewer shooting him in the face with a water-gun mic (CLASSIC!!!), and he's all about the image, like he doesn't have to take a dump each day like the rest of us Earthlings. His talking in that clip -- he's coming off like he's Superman -- classic Tom Cruise. Shallow and self-deluded.

Oh, sure, and that's the hypocrisy! I'm shared this before, but it's definitely worth a read -- classic expose on Scientology from Time Magazine. Yes, Cruise says he goes out every day wanting to help people and make things better -- yeah, right! He spends all his time and energy on rich celebs like the Beckhams or Will Smith, while normal folk all over the place are getting ripped off by the Church of Scientology. They have a special celeb center that normal Joe's will never even see, while they talk average people into doing things like mortgaging their homes for more Scientology training costs. Hell, I may even read that unauth. Tom Cruise bio myself... Some crazy claims it apparently makes, but might make for some good escapist reading! Got to be some decent nuggets in there, though. No way the guy could get away with just making everything up...

I don't hate his movies, but prefer the ones where he really branches out, and his character isn't just another paper-doll Cruise -- you know, "Hey, it's Tom Cruise in a samurai suit!" Most of his films have what I call "Cruise-isms".... one of those is the "Tom Cruise Moment of Focus and Clarity" (surely him drawing on his Scientological power)... Examples... The scene at the beginning of "MI2" where he's on the cliff in a precarious position, facing away from the mountain, and the camera zooms in on his face as he focuses his mind. The scene in "Last Samurai" where he's surrounded by nighttime attackers in the village street, an the camera zooms in on his face as he focuses his mind.

There is also the "Tom Cruise Rapid Lip Purse", as in "A Few Good Men", where in the courtroom he replies to Nicholson, "Crystal" (as in crystal clear) -- check the little purse of the lips with the faint smirk. He's like a freaking robot with a certain number of moves that he rotates thru... Even when you see him laugh in interviews, it has to be this big, toothy laugh. I really never see him snicker. He's just a Cruise-bot...

One performance of his that I really did enjoy, though, was "MI III", and that was probably more the influence of director J.J. Abrams trying to give the film a different feel. I refused to watch it at first, but loved it when I did. The scene near the beginning where he's pleading w/ Philip Seymour Hoffman not to shoot his girlfriend is incredibly intense, and very well delivered. I can't fault him there... He's best when he's not doing cheesy Tom Cruise Superman films.
