PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) -- Upset that his 7-year-old son wouldn't wear a Green Bay Packers jersey during the team's playoff victory Saturday, a man restrained the boy for an hour with tape and taped the jersey onto him.

Mathew Kowald was cited for disorderly conduct in connection with the incident with his son at their home in Pardeeville, Lt. Wayne Smith of the Columbia County Sheriff's Department said. Pardeeville is about 30 miles north of Madison.

The 36-year-old Kowald was arrested Monday after his wife told authorities about the incident. Kowald was taken to the county jail and held until Wednesday, when he pleaded no contest, paid a fine of $186 and was released.

Kowald's wife filed a restraining order Wednesday, so Kowald will not be able to have contact with his family, Smith said. Smith said other domestic issues have surfaced, though he wouldn't elaborate.

The boy refused to wear the jersey Saturday, when the Packers beat the Seattle Seahawks in a playoff game, Smith said. Smith said the incident sounded strange when reported at first, but the mother took pictures with her cell phone and that type of evidence is difficult to dispute.

Kowald, contacted later Wednesday by the Portage Daily Register, said the incident started as a joke. His son challenged him by saying he wouldn't root for the Packers. When he tied the boy up, the youngster was laughing while his wife took pictures, he said.

"Then he couldn't get out and he got upset and that's it. It lasted a minute," he said. "I didn't mean no harm, and he knows that, but I haven't been able to tell him that."

District Attorney Jane Kohlwey said there wasn't enough evidence to support felony charges.

"I wouldn't agree with what he did, but legally a parent can restrain a child," she said. "I have no proof of emotional damage. ... I have to follow the law.

Yeah...I heard about this story on the news! This ranks up there with one of the most ridiculous stories I've ever heard! That said, EVERYONE will be pulling for the Packers in the Super Bowl, regardless of who their opponent is. New England or San Diego won't have any fans, outside of their home area. Favre has always been one of the most likeable guys, in any sport. Even though I don't rank the guy in my top 5 QB's of all time, he's a good player, who's hoping he can win a final championship! Hopefully some of those wacked out Packer fans will get a grip on reality! I'd never force my little boy to wear Boston sports gear, but would be forced to disown him if he wasn't pulling for Boston teams

Uh, please don't lump me in that pathetic group. I have never, and NEVER plan to EVER pull for the Packers.

Thank you! Go whomever plays the Packers!!!! :P

That just means you have impeccable taste :) I will say that if New England doesn't get by the Chargers that I will definitely be pulling for the Packers, and it's definitely not because of any allegiance I have to the cheese land. I simply despise the Chargers. They all run their mouths too much, and are a bit too enamored with their own talent. Even though they're a good team, and have played superbly down the stretch, they're still not quite as good as they think they are!

My guess is Sweatshirt Hood will cut ties with him immediately after the superbowl. Once a thug, ALWAYS a thug.

Don't be so quick to judge. I think he is being extorted.

Have to be.

His track record's a mile long.

I love when dudes with his same MO spout that crap about "supporting my family" too, give us a break and shut up.

Heard that story yesterday and this morning one about a retarded Pats fan...

Dude TATTOOED the Pats logo on both sides of his head to look like the helmet and then tatt'd the number 12 on the back of his neck. He also says if they win the Bowl, he will tattoo the Lombardi trophy on his head too.

I don't think it's such a bad story. A guy got a little carried away with a kid's non-comforming attitude...all in the name of quasi-discipline I'm sure. The kid is laughing and carrying on and so is the Mom. Then the kid got a little scared and the Mom is using it against the Dad. Just think about if someone wrote a news story about how you horsed-around with your kids, but put a negative spin on it. In the court of public opinion, you'd be branded a bad guy because you "endangered your son's life" when all you did was push him a little too high on the swing. Bottom line is that we don't know all the details. Sounds to me like there are much deeper issues in that family.

Anyha, the real bizarre Packers story was last fall, when a guy quit his job, took his kids out of school, and moved his family from Australia to Green Bay because he feared it was Favre's last year and he wanted to see him play. He said the plans were that once the season was over, he'd move everyong back. Now this is crazy.

It would be pretty funny if they changed their logo for next season.

That's exactly the same joke the newscaster made right after they showed it... "In a related story, the Patriots have just announced they've changed their team logo as of today."

Dumbass. I hope they change it too.

Listen...Moss' track record speaks for itself. That said, he has NEVER been accused of domestic violence by anyone! The guy has one illegal thing on his rap sheet, and that was smoking weed. The rest of it is just stupid shit, like not playing when he didn't feel like playing and mooning Packers fans!

I'll tell you what...I give the guy credit for coming out and defending himself and not "lawyering up" and issuing statements, like all of these spoiled athletes do! As of right now, the accusations against the guy are just that. There hasn't been a single charge filed by the authorites in Florida, so we shall see. I'll tell you one thing...the fact that this woman alleges Moss committed a battery against her but then waited more than a week to seek a restraining order doesn't make her appear to have too much credibility! It certainly lends credence to Moss' assertion that this woman is attempting to extort him.

I can tell you all of us old-time Patriots fans wish they would change it back to the original logo (the one in my avatar)! Back in the day, it was the only good thing about the Patriots, because the team sucked ass! That idiotic flying Elvis on their helmets now, is embarrassing!

Moss is lying.

Someone on the Bolts needs only to hit Moss about as hard (like JR Reed did in the Eagles game) as he hits girlfriends and feamale traffic cops in his SUV and he disapears.

Then they can focus on the REAL problem: Trying to stop Wes Welker. Dude is MURDER on 3rd down underneath routes.

Yeah, Pats had the two biggest impact offseason acquisitions - Moss and Welker. I think their next two game will be blowouts.

You can't judge all Packer fans by one guy who's crazy. I'm glad the wife took matters into her hands and took care of it. That guy needs to be locked up somewhere. I count myself as a life long Packer Fan. I remember watching the Ice Bowl when it was played and I would never do that to someone who is a fan of the other team. They are always welcome wherever I'm living.

I agree. The Pats should be in Red, White and Blue. Drop the silver! I'd love the Bronco's to switch back to their old uniforms too.

You ain't kidding. Wiconsin's holy trinity is beer, cheese, and the Packers.
Brett Favre walks on water up there.

(that's only cuz it's 8 degrees up there and all the water is frozen... but don't tell them that...)

Hey, up there, they can give all the dirty looks they want, but the minute one of them creeps over our border into Bear territory, it's open season. Bear fans haaaaate the Packs.

We may lose at... er.. everything... around here but we take it seriously.

Your right about Brett being the best. He's broken alot of records already and I'm very sure he's not finshest yet and he's damn good at what he does and he's still having fun. Which makes watching the game fun. But I know he's human and want's to be thought of that way.

Yep, and you can count on my cheering for the Packers from here on out. I said months ago that if the Cowboys can't win it, then I want Favre to win it all so he can go out on top. Now, how are we going to get by them Patriots?

I'm not sure. But I'm sure they will find a way. By the way, didn't they beat the Pat's in SB 31 only to lose to them the next year? All I know is that the Packers are on fire and they will give it all they got and then some.
