Does Arnel Really Sound Like Steve Perry?

All this talk of Arnel being a Steve Perry sound alike, I don't see it. I personally think he sounds similar enough to do the classics justice but also has enough of a unique voice to make it his own.

many try, but alas there is only one. of course his brothers ( ) think they'll be reliving their glory (Perry) days with Pineda at the helm. yeah, good luck with that

p.s.
i didn't vote due to not finding the perfect fit.

Good poll. I went with choice 3, but as of right now it's purely speculative until I hear him perform live. The live setting is the only determining factor I will use to decide whether he is right or not. If I had to speculate, which I have been, I'd say he's an outstanding choice. But in the end, only time will tell. Speaking of which, I wonder if they'll tour with Asia?

Actually I only have a few youtubes to go on. But yes! After hearing this comparison youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n3Z9KaGeUU it actually creeped me out just how much he does sound like Perry. Saying that, I'll give the new stuff with Arnel a listen and decide then. But I know the excitement of the JSS fronted Journey just isn't going to be there. The uniqueness is gone. For me anyway.

My answer wasn't among the options.

Hell no. Nobody sounds just like Steve Perry because nobody IS Steve Perry except the man himself.

I think Arnel sounds like Arnel Pineda of the Zoo. Anyone else notice that similarity??

Ditto. The question shouldn't need more than a yes or no answer. By throwing in all the other biased commentary, it skews the poll into a direction that doesn't necessarily reflect their overall opinion.

If you had to add a comment after yes or no, my vote of choice would be to say:

No, he doesn't sound like Perry, but he has a good voice and I'm waiting to hear what he sounds like with Journey before drawing a conclusion either way.

Of course, you can't fit all of that in a poll sentence, but that would be a fair and reasonable option to have.

I'm still stunned that this question is even being asked.

My opinion of Arnel at this point is, he has a damn good voice. Can cover many vocalists. He's no Steve Perry, but next to Jeremey, he seems to be able to handle the catalog. With all of that said, I'm going to give him to 3/4 of the way through the tour or so to get into a groove before I pass any judgment. I will say that I'm cautiously optimistic.

I think a good option for this poll would be "Who thinks this thread will be locked and/or deleted within 12 hours?" 8)

To be honest, I don't really care. Steve Perry ain't there, who cares who sings for this band - it doesn't matter. So yeah sure, i'm sure he's fine, but... you know, we have to just settle for anything.

The results of this poll will mean absolutely nothing to the record buying/concert going public at large. Whilst not Steve Perry by any means Pineda is by far the closest any of the post Perry replacements has come to emulating 'his' sound. Just the sound mind - everything else is yet to be proven.

I didnt vote wheres the option that says "Sounds alot like Perry, but wont be as good, and it is a stupid move to simply try to sound like you were in the past and be a tribute act to yourself.

No vote here as there was no option which reflected my views.

No, Pineda does not sound like Perry to my ears. He just happens to sing in a similar range.

I don't know whether he will be a good fit for Journey until I can hear what he is bringing to the table. Regurgitation of their old hits will not work for me. I need to hear him sing his own songs in his own way.

I already have the legacy. I don't need the nip-and-tuck version of those songs.

I don't think he sounds anything like Perry because Perry had good diction and a voice that was a gift from God.

I don't think he looks like Perry because Perry had confidence and stage presence.

I don't think he will be as successful as Perry because Journey hit their prime 25 years ago.

I do think he will satisfy the casual Journey fan who just wants to hear the songs live no matter who is singing.

He's been doing Journey cover songs in his band. He's been trying to emulate Perry as much as he can, just as he tries to sound like the singer for whatever song he covered in his Zoo band. That's why Neal chose him. They've said flat out they are going back to their "legacy" sound, which means a Perry wanna-be.

Does he succeed in his Perryisms? Maybe enough to get by, which is what Schon & Cain are banking on.

He ain't Perry, not even close. When Pineda is a major songwriter with them and vocalist of that magnitude, let me know and I'll buy his product. Till then, he's just another wanna-be, sitting in for the dude who made the rest of them rich.

Fair enough. I too hope they play at least 3 or 4 new songs.

I like this voice and he does have similarities to SP, but he also sounds original enough to be his own singer.

He's a high tenor, there will be comparisons, the best Arnel can do is to just sing and enjoy.

I say scrap the poll and start over. Too many people said they couldn't find an option.
