Guys and gals,

I have found unofficial 5.1 mixes of the greatest hits cd and infinity. They do not sound as incredible as official 5.1 releases but are very good. Perry is damn near all by himself in the center channel on some of the tracks. They are very full sounding but a little heavy in the reverb department. These suckers are about 650 megs each and have to be burned to a cd to be played and must be played in a dvd player. Of course you have to have a dvd player that is hooked up to a 5.1 DTS receiver digitally to hear them properly. I found them on the news groups sometime back. Anyone sporting these ?

I'm happy with my collection of third generation cassettes, than you very much.

Occasionally in stores, you can find a SACD. Super Audio, I think.
Is this the same thing?

No this is 5.1 surround sound. For instance backing vocals might be in the rear speakers and lead vocals are almost always in the center channel. If you have a dvd player hooked up for surround sounds go buy Fleetwood Mac Rumors and Hotel California on DVD audio in 5.1 You will never want to go back to regular stereo sound. You will hear so many things you have never heard in the music before. Those 2 are the best sounding ones I have heard. Its like the band is playing around you and your standing in the middle....

Yeah, I've got 5.1 and I think I've heard 7.1. I agree it's awesome.

If you like Rumors or Hotel Cali buy them on dvd audio now !! They will play in any DTS dvd player it does not have to be a "dvd audio" player. The Dvd-audio players only advantage is that they will play back in 96khz which is as close to master quality as you can get however without a really expensive system and speakers you will never hear the difference. Rumors is so amazing. Gold dust women sounds so huge !!

Is this the same as DVD Audio???

I drive an Acura TL with a DVD Audio system in it...will this play in that?

I've wanted Journey to do something like this for a long time. I was disappointed with the mix on the Houston show. I know Perry was trying to recreate a live experience by having crowd noise in rear speakers and the band from the front, but I don't like it. I want to be immersed, completely surrounded by the music. I think the way the Led Zeppelin DVD mix was done is the way to go.

Does this mix do that?

Folks, this DTS 5.1 has to be what is known as a fold down of the stereo. You can't do true 5.1 mixes unless you have access to the multitracks.

And for the record, SACD can be done in stereo or 5.1. There are three Journey SACDs (Escape, Greatest Hits, Arrival), but none were mixed for surround.

That DTS is not true 5.1 as I said. I wouldn't bother. Fold downs work on the principle of taking a mono or stereo and using software to take that mono or stereo image and make it fake surround. You'd arguably do just as well by turning on the Dolby surround circuit in your home stereo with the stereo CD.

The stereo SACDs are totally different. Those are just hi-rez versions of the albums. When done right, 5.1 (SACD, DVD-A, DTS all specifically done for musc; I'm not talking movies) sounds fantastic.

Damn them. Why don't they just make proper 5.1 mixes and put 'em out there?? I'd buy 'em all. Can you picture Neal and Perry at their peak in 5.1?? Sheesh! I'd never leave the house!

I'm too poor for a 5.1 system at the moment, but I took the Slippery When Wet dualdisc to my singer's house one day and we cranked it...and it was a pretty awesome experience.

I'm bummed-
I bought my wife a surround system for Christmas. The stereo sounds great and I can get all the speakers to work, etc., but when I press the 5.1 on the DVR, it's either totally quiet or in the case of Journey Vegas Dvd, it's just high end.

I'm usually pretty good with that stuff, but I can't seem to get it to work right.

I got the Beatles Help! dvd and was so dissapointed I couldn't get the 5.1 to work...

grrr! What's the secret of unlocking the mystery box that emits sound??

ya hell freezes over sounds awesome in 5.1 DTS

The journey tracks I have in DTS 5.1 sound better than their stereo counterparts by far. No they are not official however whoever worked on them did a great job separating and mixing what they had to work with. Cool thing is that you can raise the volume of your center channel and get more Perry and Smitty since that is where they are mostly... If you listen to the center channel by itself you get a nearly dry vocal with a lot of drums and the reverb from the vocals seems to be in the rears. I like em and think they are worth having. Perfectly legal if you own the collections isnt it ? I own greatest hits and essentail so im cool right ? So many fine lines on copyrights you have to be careful.

It's a fine line for sure, but it's not like you don't already own the songs, purchased legally and separate from this customized version. I think that's where the distinction lies. These cuts are custom and not available for purchase.

Now, if it's law suits you're concerned about, the only one I'd lose sleep over is the one I'm going to file if you don't share these tracks with me.
